A treasure indeed! An old man here, with more fires burning inside than most of these young players. NOBODY conducted this piece as well--as lyrically, or as frighteningly!
His 1959 recording with Boston remains THE interpretation of all time.
Sony has been releasing box sets of unheard Munch recordings with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This great conductor could play any national school exceptionally well, whether it be the French, German, or Russian schools. Not even Toscanini would attempt all three of these.
Munch is a god! I will adore him FOREVER.... What a musician, what an Artist! Anyone have a documentary on Dutilleux which features the premiere of one of the latter's works with BSO by Munch? Never came across it in its DVD format or anything of the like....
Un document exceptionnel, je rejoins les précédents commentaires. Merci de nous l'avoir communiqué. Charles Munch était un des plus grands de ce temps, qui n'est pas si loin, mais qui est déjà trop loin...
This rehearsal is of the ball scene from Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique," a piece that Munch conducted many times and yet he always found new treasures in the music, so his interpretations were always fresh and excitement. He was the first conductor of the Orchestre de Paris and only a year later died while leading them on a successful American tour.
wonderful!

No one could conduct Berlioz like Munch! What a rare and welcome glimpse into his method.

I don't read or speak a word of French, but I loved every second of this. Thanks for posting!
