What really bugs me is that most people who say that you can't teach Christianity are athiest or agnostic. Therefore, they believe that all religions are nonsense. This means that they have no truth and are just ideas and lifestyles. If this were true, then how would religion be any different from any other large-scale organized idea or lifestyle? The "lack of a god and spirituality" arguement is nonsense, seing as Buddhism has no god and Confucianism has no spiritual side. God bless America!
I like how he has at 3:40 Math and Physics books as being politically correct LOL......How do you argue with stupid Creationist when they reject simple facts
@tynitty516 he was clearly saying that they were influinced within by said ideas. For an undebateable example, my cousins school mathbook had a question involving cards. The cards said "Vote Obama". A physics book I once used said that "science is compatable of all people with open minds excluding those of Christian faith and "muslim" extremism" as if muslim extremism is not a real thing and that macro evolution only conflicts with the sole religion of chistianity
Jack Straw arrogantly refusing to talk to the US Senate about the Lockerbie bomber's obscenely early release, plus the fact Britain has the WORST record for broken homes and teenage pregnancy in the whole of Europe, are just two topical examples of how Left Wing c***s have destroyed the nation with their PC Marxism.
Yet these morons STILL believe they know better than the rest of us, spitting venom at dissenters!
Click my name for TOLERANCE SUITE FOR THE VITRIOLIC ENLIGHTENED!
Teaching the bible i npublic schools is insane. Then again, our students are becoming tools. Their schedules jammed with course work in self-esteem, personal safety, AIDS education, family life, consumer training, driver's ed, holistic health, and gym. The typical American high school student spends only 1, 460 hours on subjects like math, science and history during their four years in high schools. Meanwhile, their counterparts in Japan will spend 3,170 hours on basic subjects.
MOBO fights against racism! So much so that black artists stayed away from 'too white' Glasgow when it was hosted there!
Avoiding whites = anti-racist?!
Music and radical Left politics merge beautifully in this video: UNITE AGAINST [PUBLIC] FASCISM! (THE BNP IS JUST THE TIP OF THE WHITE RACIST ICEBERG!)
The Bible is the most referenced book in the world, it is important from a literary standpoint, btw do you really think fundamentalists will want children critically examining the bible? It's important learn the bible in the same way it's important learn ancient Greek myths it's culturally relevant.
Well if I am going to put money into public education and I am a virulent anti-thiest, Then I should not be coerced to putting money into public education if it will promote religion and my child would be required to read a christian text.
With the recent tragedy of a non-American being [sworn in] as president, the PC stuff is being RAM-RODDED down our throats at a rate that would make Obama's heroes, Joe Stalin and Adolph Hitler proud as hell.
nope, the way it is inserted is that 1. it's elective, not required and 2. a historical document. The bible is one of the most important books in american history. The logic given in opposition would be like saying no one can read any book that promotes christianity...even if it's one like Moby Dick, Walden, or the like and not a specific textbook.
We in Europe already have PC deeply rooted in society after the 2WW was over this caused a power vacuum that was fully taken by PC Neo-Socialists thrashed every root of European identity.
I myself like my other peers are grown up with this PC in schools and most of us are just tired of all this BS
thats explain the revival of the right wing in Europe which is a good thing
And words like racism and fascism are just empty words here cause its used for political goals by the left wing
If you tolerate islamofascists, those pigs that hide behind their mutilated clitless wives, who torture gays and lesbians, who send their children to suicide bomb themselves,
then don't be surprised that your children will be next.
Islamo fascists are planning to conquer all of you western christians. you will all have clitless wives daughters and mothers.
If you tolerate islamo fascists Monstrosities in Darfur Sudan then your children will be next.
Political Correctness is eating our country alive and must be stamped out completely. Our kid's (America's future by the way, who WILL RUN THE COUNTRY IN ONLY THE NEXT DECADE OR SO) must not be blinded by it any longer.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have to say that this is terribly stupid.Southernavenger, you are neither considering the past of slavery and the oppression towards minorities that the United States has promoted, nor the need to use a language that doesn't offend them anymore. Besides, womyn and african-americans shoudn't be portrayed stereotypicaly; that is just fairness. There is a separation between chucrch and state that is impossible to break. Only KKK's and hate groups want a domination of one religion over another.
Guiller you are dumb as heck, most slavery has been agaisnt cultures that themselves were SHIT full of starvation, cannibalistic behavior and real oppression of women! Did you ever ask yourself what an Africa without western influence would be like you MORON? Probably not, as any relativist scum you only persecute white people (racist), the fact that several african tribes cut womens vaginas and have any number of sick customs prevented by western influence you say nothing about. Big surprise!
Well, at least he's not blaming the teachers union for all this "political correctness". Most of the "political correctness" comes from local pressure groups and not the teachers union.
Democracy is the best form of government...as long as it is not misused in the name of religion, ethnicity (race), language, class etc.
Over one third of the population of Miami speaks Spanish at home. Is it right to teach everything in Spanish?
How is the message said in this video any different from the idea of going with an ethnic majority? Would you give more importance to White or Black or Brown people in their respective majority areas?
Let's say we have 10 men and 3 women in a room. If the majority agree to raping the 3 women then raping them is okay according to the philosphy of majority rule/utiliatrianism.
everytime you guys get caught with your pants down you retreat with this "I am talking only about high school..." defense. That is not what the video says, it's also not what your sweeping statements say. Oh, and "christian" writings are read at HS level too, under the guise of "philosophy", where they read Aquinas, Erasmus, and so on, although perhaps not in your backward locality where people think Christianity ends with the KJ version of the bible.
'''''This is why we shouldn't have public education'''''
exactly...all public schools should be run by private business, as competitive, for profit institutions...imagine schools competing to have the best curriculums...
Teaching a Bible course is not the same as indoctrinating someone into the Christian faith. My pastor has a Book of Mormon and a Koran in his office and he's neither Mormon or Muslim. He has them so he can get a point of view. In Europe they teach the Bible and they are twice as secular and liberal than the United States. Western culture has very strong roots in the Bible, so it's good to know the context of your origins.
neither political correctness nor christianity have any place in public schools. schools should educate, not indoctrinate. keep all religion out of schools.
locally elected school boards should have full autonomy in determining course material...if it offends a minority, too bad...there is no constitutional right to not be offended...
there is no constitutional right to a public school education. public schools in and of themselves are unconstitutional. i dont know why you have brought the unfollowed written law into this. aside from that, yes, i would probably agree with you. locally elected school boards is best for the system we have.
I'm glad you see the problem with both extremes and their unwillingness to face reality; most people are on one end or the other with no ability to recognize that human idiocy can manifest itself anywhere.
Political correctness is so fucking retarded. Sadly, it is a doctrine invoked in every educational facility today. It always the same diversity, free speech, and expressed opinion as joseph stalin allowed: none. So to all of you lefties, do the world a favor, and blow your non-existant brains out, you ruin the world.
look dude, stop spewing the same bs over and over again. if you don't know what you are talking about, don't talk. NA universities usually have departments in theology or religious studies, courses covering a range of christian philosophers, who are also read in other social science courses.
AH, so then if the mob of hobos wants to loot hastings it's okay? According your philospy of mob rule/utilitarianism this would be allowed. Do you like poker? According to your philosphy then the pot should be divided equally among the players. No one should get more than the rest since the rest are the majority.
The founding fathers we not fond of democracy, only a republic with rights such as life and liberty (with its product being property)
nice non sequitur...democratically elected school board akin to mob of hobos...
atheists can send their kids to a school where the majority want prayer, bible classes etc...or home or private school...the will of the majority should never be hostage to the minority...for the mere sake of not offending the minority...
your second paragraph made no more sense than your first...
re: 3rd paragraph...my guess is you couldn't define republic to save your life...
"the fly in the buttermilk is that rape and looting are illegal"
They are illegal according to mob rule just as choosing curriculum and text books is chosen according to mob rule. All I'm doing is presenting a flaw in the relativistic morals of mob rule. ("Demo" from "Democracy" comes from the word "Demos" meaning mob. "acracy" meaning rule. So therefore for democracy means "mob rule".)
you're painting with a pretty broad brush, at any rate...and not building much of a case against school boards choosing curriculum, free of big govt. oversight...
but I digress...suffice it to say there is no constitutional redress for offended minorities...save in the minds of activist judiciaries and liberal law makers who mistake offense for oppression...
So you believe that I an atheist should be forced to pay for Biblical studies on the basis of "you have no right to not be offended". BUT I CAN SAY THE SAME TO YOU. I can use that same right against you claiming that you have no right to be offended for not being able to force other people to pay for your Biblical Studies. The door opens both ways.
This doesn't have anything to do with free speech. This has to do with the right one gets to keep the fruits of his labor as outlined in the constitution.
wow, you had me going there I almost thought you were cnn or some thing but you're right....political correctness forces the average joe to have to endure seeing public displays of gayness, nudists and every thing else he was tought as a child as wrong, but to start praying the rosary in a public forum is wrong becuz you're offendin the atheists and other religions ? wtf?
People use "politically correct" as a slur term in order to intimidate people into silence about their thoughts. If I want to suggest that there is something wrong about teaching young gay men to hate and fear their own sexuality, I am immediately reminded that this is a "politically correct" opinion which "oppresses" heterosexual men and deprives them of freedom of speech. Just how they are oppressed or deprived of freedom is, of course, never quite explained.
I would be all for teaching the Bible in schools. It's an important text in the West. However, because so many people still think it's the word of God, I don't think that's really possible.
Although, I think the Bible is the biggest cause of atheism in the world, if left in the hands of the average evangelical Christian teacher it could be warped into a Sunday school lesson rather than a lesson on American heritage and Western culture.
mm...this is quite exaggerated, and how is there anything wrong with multicultural studies, and learning about cultures, religions, and races and kinds of people...
I have came across this great group which opposes the evils of capitalism, imperialism, fascism and nazism. It is predominantly a left-wing group and it is the most pro-freedom and pro-democratic group i have came across. You should go and check it out. Its called the "Coalition of the Left".
when I was in public elementary school, morning prayers were forced on us. Teachers actually gave students detention for refusing to stand through the morning prayers. That was less than 20 years ago...fuck religion
Its funny, the same persons saying no faith should be taught in schools think the faith of marxism should be taught in school as long as you call it "liberalism" and not marxism. They actually think just changing the name makes a difference. Ohh btw political correctness IS marxism, they changed it when the old kind caused 100 million deaths.
Liberal means being FREE you Noron! Liberalism is about social control forcing everyone to think and speak liberal. Are you actually having problems understanding why todays liberalism is just marxist bs? Marxists change name constantly and often to something already in use.
do yourself a favour and look up "Liberalism" on wikipedia. Or just google for it. It's a set of political theories and philosophical traditions that has its roots in European intellectual thoughts, the basis of which forms modern Western liberal democracies (hence the word, "liberal"...). If you don't know what the hell you are talking about, don't talk.
Actually, he's right. Modern Liberalism is based on socialism which was created as a comprise for left leaning Democrats. And socialism is straight from the Communist Manifesto. You are thinking of Classical Liberalism which has more in common metaphysically with modern Libertarianism.
No, he's not right. 1) he wasn't saying what you are saying (and I don't see how anyone with even a passing familiarity in western political theory would think that); 2) "left-wing" liberals are liberals, not marxists. they believe capitalist societies can accomodate different ideological tensions through the democractic process. Marxists do not (hence the idea of "revolution").
the very reason leftists in our fed and state govt. fight so hard against local autonomy/dismantling of the NEA is to insure the continuing indoctrination of little transitional marxists...
revolutions can be undertaken without bullets or riots...
lol@ accomodate different ideological tensions through the democratic process.....too funny...
I asked a Canadian, "We have African-Americans in our country. What would you call them if they came to Canada?" to which they answered "Black"
How come no one calls me a Netherlands-American? How come I don't have a heterosexual parade? Why can't I celebrate Christmas with Santa and a tree as an 'athiest'? What is so religious about Mutha fukin Sant Claus???
When does Marxism become the oppressor? I still don't see any rational tie from the Christians to Santa. And if "Ho Ho Ho" is tied to an offensive word, shouldn't they just banish the word "hoe" instead? After all, it's the offensive one. WTF is WRONG with people?
Political correctness is a cancer that WILL destroy america, if not crushed wherever it is found. To ignore it or look away with a raised eyebrow is suicidal.
How is it my professor is able to openly greet students with "allah akbar" at the beginning of every class and hold a quran while lecturing on world religions, but my advisor/counselor is not allowed her cross necklace or a Bible in her office? Why is the feminist wichan in my class allowed her podium of denouncing all other religions except druids and her own and that is considered open minded, but my friend was failed for discussing christianity?
@sequio Because you live in a police state, and the truth offends people. So, I guess that's a two-part answer. You should ask yourself, "what is the PURPOSE of this?" We all know it exists. The purpose, the insidious purpose, of it all is to CONTROL YOU.
Yes, political correctness often goes overboard (sometimes way overboard).
Yes, knowledge of the bible and Christianity is important to understand our culture as a whole.
Yes, it should therefore be offered as part of a comparative religion course as (at least) an elective.
No, the bible should not be taught as if it is a historical document. Teaching a religion as if it were not one would violate separation of church and state.
Yes, prayer should be allowed in school as a right to religious freedom, but it should not be mandated or led by the teacher so as to avoid any separation of church and state issues.
Essentially, I don't mind if you close your eyes and bow your head during math class, but I demand that my teacher keep teaching me math.
And I believe in a previous post you told me "I don't bring anything intellectual to these posts." Yeah - and you calling people "douchebags" is just soooooo stimulating to the mind, it really reflects a developed political stance and loads of maturity.
LOL - it's 9th CIRCUIT court, not "circus." Reminds me of the type of mistakes my previous 7th graders made. Holy fuck, you're dumb. I just looked up your story - the kids were learning ABOUT Islam, they were not being taught to embrace it or practice it. That is illegal, and the school personnel would have been FIRED. This just occurred at my school -a teacher of 30 years was fired for having students look up prophecies in the bible and relate them to the Iraq war.
I consider Christiany - along with all other religions - totally ridiculous and pointless. Who the hell are you to tell me what I feel about a religion? Oh - and it is NOT in the constitution that we can practice religion in public formats, like school. Again, your immaturity is giving way to just flat out lying and misinformation. NO PUBLIC SCHOOL IS ALLOWED TO MAKE KIDS PRACTICE RELIGION IN ANY FORM.
Oh - and why are you worried at all about CA public schools? Aren't they just full of bad teachers who aren't doing their jobs and can't get work any place else, that's why they "just teach" - according to your lovely outlook on the teaching/learning process.
gee "gymnast" you have shown that you are a hateful little moronic bitch, but this is just plain ridiculous - where do you get your information from, I'm curious? How is Islam being forced in public schools in California? As you well know, I am quite familiar with the California public education system - and what you just said is by far the most ridiculous post I think I've ever read on YouTube. Either you're extremely misinformed, or you're just a flat out liar - which is it? I'm curious....
having some knowledge of the bible and christianity is very important to understanding the history of the last 2000 years. besides, the course was an elective, that is, completely voluntary, not mandatory. why deny students freedom of choice, especially a choice to learn about something so influential in history?
Oh, and one more thing I might add, if anything else: it sys in 1Corinthians that "YOU( meaning Christians) are in this world, but not a PART of it" Hence Separation of Church and State. Hey, I can't make this bullshit up..look it up...IT'S IN THE BIBLE! In other words Paul thought it best that Christians try to be a part of the world they lived in(in a co=operative way) but to consider themselves NOT a part of its beliefs. So if you DON'T believe in Separation of Church and State...too bad!
did you even read what I wrote? It was only 2 sentences long... I said "It freaked me out".. meaning I didn't appreciate it. Do you not know what "freaked me out" means?
OHHH..okay so it's okay then to FORCE religion into the pubic school systems against their will just to satisfy your need for religion? And why should WE leave our schools just so you can proslytize your Christian agenda? How deluded you Christian fanatics are! If you want religion, go to church or have your parents preach it at you! Don't be coming into the public universities and schools pushing your poisonous agendas on me. Our kids are their for an education...not indoctrination.
So you are saying that those who don't want to participate in so called "prayers" are immature? Why should those that don't want to participate be branded as being immature? Sure, there is freedom OF religion, but there is also freedom FROM religious oppresion and being forced to pray to a God that you have no belief in.
I recall my sociology prof at UGA openly and directly preaching the virtues of the British social health care system, dressing her daughter as a boy one day and a girl the next to demonstrate how the sexes are treated differently, and bringing *gasp* black people to talk about their experiences. Nvrmnd where I grew up was almost predominately black lol. We're not in the 60's anymore.
fred phelps is a wack job. the southern avenger is just a man with principles. As a southerner he should be allowed his own culture. Don't be a racist.
would it be at all posible to explain the culture of this southern man's principles.does the constitution of the united states fit in there somewhere?
Gee. Precisely the Constitutionalist message. We just take it a step further and identify entities like the Rockefeller family who have instilled these inputs in our educational system for decades. Out thesis is that you, your parents and your children are being intentionally made stupid, weak and obedient. Try this: ask around what form of government we have. Ask teachers, policemen, legislators, your friends. Any answer other than "republican" is incorrect.
You still rock dude. Have you written any books? You have a great way with words, and a way of getting your point across without being offensive and without name calling...something which tends to be the trend with the media elite when they're confronted with something for which they have no answer. I won't name any names like Bill O'Reilly though.
Political correctness cuts both ways. There are things we can't say because conservatives object and there are things that can't be said because liberals object. What we have left is hardly anything and anything any teacher says can be subjected to ridiculous scrutiny as it seems no one seems to want to be outdone when it comes to being offended!
Precisely blackturtleus, and so citizens go back to legislating out their own idea of how we should live in our neighborhoods while the wealthy cut the broad strokes in foreign policy. Thus in our state, we've just determined that people shouldn't smoke in public while the deals are going through to refine incredibly polluting oil-retaining sands in Canada and an amnesty immigration bill is being resurrected. And here we are talking about PC language. Keep moving towards the light.
Teaching multiculturalism, feminism or racial nationalism (not merely recalling the tumultous 1960's) is indeed imposing a value system on young minds. That this value system isn't technically classified as a "religion" doesn't make it any more or less attractive to the taxpayers who subsidize it without their consent.
Multiculteralism is the idea that different cultures and races can live together peacefully. Whats wrong with that idea? Should we be teaching our kids not to get along with other races and cultures?
Feminism is the idea that men and women should be treated as equals. Again what would you prefer that our kids lean? That women are less than men?
Learning about other races and rascist oppression, helps kids learn to not hate people who are different than them. Cont.
orygun-multiculturalism is the idea that diversity should be promoted as a desired goal, as opposed to humanely dealing with the inherent tension in multicultural and multiethnic societies. Feminism rejects the obvious, biological disparities between men and women. Both are utopian, and therefore ultimately dangerous, despite having good aspects.
Well..no. I don't have space to go into length here, but many feminists do NOT reject essential differences between men and women (and this, incidentally, is why these feminists get critiqued for their "essentialism"). I'd like to continue this but this is neither the ideal forum nor the medium...
I concur with orygun78, multiculturalism is not wrong at all. You have not in this video really outlined any reason why not to think so (although you did haphazardly throw in photos of so-called "campus radicals").
I agree that we are too idealistic and not realistic enough about the inherent pitfalls of being a nation of mixed cultures but I disagree with the idea that we can't create harmony within our differences.
AS far as religion goes, they are all full of crap because all religious took beleifs from another religion and twisted it around. Like christianity taking traditions and stories from the Pagan religion and incorporating it as their own. I think the history of religion and how it really came to be should be taught, not the religious text themselves, but actual history.
That's what uni courses in theology and religious studies (are supposed to) do. For example, tracing the evolution of Christianity through some key texts, contextualize the texts within the political and cultural framework through which they emerge. Heck, there is an entry for this on wikipedia...
I agree that the history should be taught as well but how could you say the current philosophy should be hung out to dry? Religion is a HUGE part of our current foreign politics and our children should be taught it so they understand the culture more. You learn this by teaching the religion in its current form not just by looking at its history since its history has little barring on how the religion acts today.
I'm not saying that it should be hung to dry, I mean I myself know both the history and the religion itself, inside and out. It makes it better for me to counteract the bullshit in saying that I am going to hell and that I need to be saved. I just say that its better to teach kids the history in school and let the parents deal with the bible, cause their are all sorts of priniciples that will force their students to read the bible if this shit is passed.
The history of the religion has little to do with the current culture, which is what affects us now. You're talking about teaching children how a religion started; I'm talking about including how religion currently affects us and why. You need to know the current form of religion and the historical form of religion.
"Religion" has change -tremendously-. For example, the secularization of Western European state profoundly impacted the authority and operations of the Roman Catholic Church, and incidentally, is a historical contributing cause to SA's rant about how "relgion is no longer taught in primary schools." (cont, lame youtube 500 character limit...)
Ah forget it, I can type up 15 paragraphs, and you still would not get it. But I find it rather pathetic that a self-proclaimed christian (you) would exhibit such poverty of knowledge about christianity. It's not my job to educate you. bye,
"You learn this by teaching the religion in its current form not just by looking at its history since its history has little barring on how the religion acts today."
Yes because the current Christian/Islamic/Jewish philosophy is identical to the philosophy that was held 1000 years ago. Religion hasn't changed at all. The only thing that's important is the history of the religion because that's the only thing that affects us currently. /sarcasm
Your reply is the dumbest thing I've ever read. Seriously... it really is.
"Yes because the current Christian/Islamic/Jewish philosophy is identical to the philosophy that was held 1000 years ago." No, dumbass, it's not. How is that people who claim religion should be taught to their children be so ignorant of religion, religious institutions, and religious texts? The "philosophies" you speak of are habitually a topic of debate among scholars of theology (for all of these religions you named) and has been for centuries. (cont)
contemporary interpretatons of Christian philosophies are shaped by major traditions, movements and debates in the history of Christian theology. Second, I didn't say anything about teaching "children." I am talking about post-sec education. (cont)
Well, how is anyone to know it was sarcasm when we are reading texts typed out. Its no reason to call me stupid if in fact you wouldnt be able to tell if anyone wasnt able to sense the sarcasm because it isnt spoken, merly typed. And what was with the whole insult anyways?
How are you supposed to know it was sarcasm? I don't know many it has something to do with the /SARCASM thing... did you see that? It's typed right out there for you. Also I wasn't calling you stupid I was calling yupper stupid.
oh ok, so u werent referring to me? ok man end the hostility... i didnt know who u r were calling yupper stupid. but by the way, do u agree with yupper on the stuff that concerns the church.... then he is right.
Seriously. Most countries have some kind of theology class I don't get why America doesn't have one. With all the issues going on in the world today you'd think we'd be talking about how religion affects government policy... The PC police need to wake up and see they're holding our kids back. They don't need to pray but they do need to learn about religion. I'm an atheist by the way.
They do, but SA conveniently deleted my post pointing out the fact that they do. They don't just have theology or religious studies courses, they have departments and programs. Anyways, considering that Christian philosophers like Aquinas and Augustine are part of the "canon" in most political theory and philosophy courses, there is simply no basis for SA's paranoia
This is exactly what my deleted post was trying to point out: selective presentation of evidence, decontextualization of isssue, and conflation and generalization. Most HS in NA don't teach classes on "gender studies" or "queer studies." These courses are certainly not "proliferating" throughout HS curriculums....
Halfway through the video he switches to college curriculum and that's where his points about gender studies and queer studies comes in (which I'm perfectly ok with for the most part). Where I take issue is the first portion where high school students aren't able to learn religious history or philosophy, which is an important aspect to learning about our world and culture.
Find me one public i.e. - taxpayer supported - college or university in the United States that does not offer women's, African American or gay studies. I never said these courses were offered in high school, just that this philosophy that is explicit at the college level also informs primary education. Yupper is in denial. Christophobia's a bitch.
Your arguments are convuluted. 1) Why shouldn't any reputable uni offer a course on gender, race, or sexuality (which, by the way, is not the sole purview of Women's Studies, AA Studies, or Queer Studies), when these are themes covered even by "traditional" literature in philosophy and political theory (have you read Plato at all?); 2) What is that in relation to an entire DEPARTMENT of Theology or Religious Studies? Are you saying that people shouldn't study race, gender, or sexuality at all?
My point is that traditional liberal arts education never compartmentalized general study into identity groups - Thomas Jefferson never studied "women's" or "gay" history, but just plain old history. Identity politics is very much a modern phenomenon and is indicative of the philosophy (or religion) of political correctness that dominates the modern academy, intelligentsia, politics and culture. This is PURELY a Western preoccupation.
Oh, the way, identity politics was fashionable in maybe the 70's and 80's. Now it's generally under attack in academia, by so-called "post-whatever" theories that usually draw extensively from continental philosophy. Identity politics is still quite fashionable in many institutional setings outside of NA, they actually think that's the most cutting edge stuff to learn. So no, it's not a "purely western preoccupation."
3) of course the curriculum at secondary level is influenced by post-secondary level curriculum--that's where HS teachers are educated (duh..). But there is no "take over" by "women's studies" or "AA studies" in relations to theology or religious studies, because all of these SS disciplines are ostracized by the natural sciences in HS and the PS-secondary level.
It's just a bit shocking to me how someone (eg. SA) is so ready to comment authoritatively on something they know so little about. Maybe do some research next time--that's what they are supposed to teach in uni...
Well, the real reason they won't teach classes on sexulaity and race in highschools is because of the classes being called racist or sexist. Because in those classes, it would probe both the pros and cons of races and sexuality. People don't like it when a certain races historical skeletons are unearthed and get mad call people racist or sexist.
Heh, that's right SA, exercise your youtube rights to censorship and delete my comments about your manipulation of facts. As we all know, those rights trump the constitutional rights of the freedom of expression you claim you so cherish. I call BS.
Your being absurd. I've hit the "remove" button instead "reply" plenty before, and always let those whose comments were accidentally removed know about it immediately. There is no censorship here. But now that your naked prejudice is exposed, I can better understand you - which in turn means you've proven yourself not worth my time.
when i was a kid in 4th grade one of the teachers forced her students to start everyday with a prayer and it creeped me out. No Faith should be in school. School is for science. Church is for faith.
Seperation of church and state is one of our constitutional rights. Im agnostic so I fully appreciate this right.
Amen, follow the Bible, & parents should teach morals, maybe our country would be what it once was. We didn't have all these problems & all the confused children, we have now. It is really sick what our people now accept as normal and acceptable. People are too into themselves to do what is correct, not PC=a coward way of doing things, people who can't think for themselves, who are followers of the far left. Keep up the good work SouthernAvenger.
Honestly, do you believe that people are that into themselves that they don't know the CORRECT thing to do? I think you Christians have this delusional reasoning down to a fault that MOST average Americans are "spiritually and morally" bankrupt when the fact is that MOST of us are really just getting sick and tired of listening to Christers preach 24/7/365 just because they THINK they can.
political correctness celebrates anything that is NOT cristian heterosexual white male. we are the only ones who can be openly and freely offended by anyone else , with no recourse . but when we offend someone... well you know what happens, lawsuits , firings , violence. who is the minority??
What really bugs me is that most people who say that you can't teach Christianity are athiest or agnostic. Therefore, they believe that all religions are nonsense. This means that they have no truth and are just ideas and lifestyles. If this were true, then how would religion be any different from any other large-scale organized idea or lifestyle? Teaching the bible i npublic schools is insane. Then again, our students are becoming tools. Their schedules jammed with course work in self-esteem, personal safety, AIDS education, family life, consumer training, driver's ed, holistic health, and gym. The typical American high school student spends only 1, 460 hours on subjects like math, science and history during their four years in high schools. Meanwhile, their counterparts in Japan will spend 3,170 hours on basic subjects.

nope, the way it is inserted is that 1. it's elective, not required and 2. a historical document. The bible is one of the most important books in american history. The logic given in opposition would be like saying no one can read any book that promotes christianity...even if it's one like Moby Dick, Walden, or the like and not a specific textbook.

Okay, so you want to call it non sequitur. Let's put it this way.
1)A hobo wants to rob from a wandering traveler. This is wrong of course.
2)A thousand hobos wants to loot a store. This too is also wrong
3)Now, let's have the hobos elect representives that will support legislation to make looting hastings okay without the owner's consent.
Well, there you have it. Mob-acracy in practice. All actions and means are justified solely on how many people agree with you.

They are illegal according to mob rule just as choosing curriculum and text books is chosen according to mob rule. All I'm doing is presenting a flaw in the relativistic morals of mob rule.

Teaching multiculturalism, feminism or racial nationalism (not merely recalling the tumultous 1960's) is indeed imposing a value system on young minds.

Both are utopian, and therefore ultimately dangerous, despite having good aspects.
southernavenger 4 years ago
Well..no. I don't have space to go into length here, but many feminists do NOT reject essential differences between men and women (and this, incidentally, is why these feminists get critiqued for their "essentialism"). I'd like to continue this but this is neither the ideal forum nor the medium...
yupper99 4 years ago
I concur with orygun78, multiculturalism is not wrong at all. You have not in this video really outlined any reason why not to think so (although you did haphazardly throw in photos of so-called "campus radicals").
benfergy 4 years ago
I agree that we are too idealistic and not realistic enough about the inherent pitfalls of being a nation of mixed cultures but I disagree with the idea that we can't create harmony within our differences.
oldhacks 4 years ago
Whats wrong with those values? These values are held by the vast majority of Americans despite all the efforts of bigots to demean these ideas.

AS far as religion goes, they are all full of crap because all religious took beleifs from another religion and twisted it around. Like christianity taking traditions and stories from the Pagan religion and incorporating it as their own. I think the history of religion and how it really came to be should be taught, not the religious text themselves, but actual history.
reaperj06221986 4 years ago
That's what uni courses in theology and religious studies (are supposed to) do. For example, tracing the evolution of Christianity through some key texts, contextualize the texts within the political and cultural framework through which they emerge. Heck, there is an entry for this on wikipedia...
yupper99 4 years ago
I agree that the history should be taught as well but how could you say the current philosophy should be hung out to dry? Religion is a HUGE part of our current foreign politics and our children should be taught it so they understand the culture more. You learn this by teaching the religion in its current form not just by looking at its history since its history has little barring on how the religion acts today.
cujothekitten 4 years ago
I'm not saying that it should be hung to dry, I mean I myself know both the history and the religion itself, inside and out. It makes it better for me to counteract the bullshit in saying that I am going to hell and that I need to be saved. I just say that its better to teach kids the history in school and let the parents deal with the bible, cause their are all sorts of priniciples that will force their students to read the bible if this shit is passed.
reaperj06221986 4 years ago
The history of the religion has little to do with the current culture, which is what affects us now. You're talking about teaching children how a religion started; I'm talking about including how religion currently affects us and why. You need to know the current form of religion and the historical form of religion.
cujothekitten 4 years ago
"Religion" has change -tremendously-. For example, the secularization of Western European state profoundly impacted the authority and operations of the Roman Catholic Church, and incidentally, is a historical contributing cause to SA's rant about how "relgion is no longer taught in primary schools." (cont, lame youtube 500 character limit...)
yupper99 4 years ago
Ah forget it, I can type up 15 paragraphs, and you still would not get it. But I find it rather pathetic that a self-proclaimed christian (you) would exhibit such poverty of knowledge about christianity. It's not my job to educate you. bye,

Seriously... it really is.
cujothekitten 4 years ago
"Yes because the current Christian/Islamic/Jewish philosophy is identical to the philosophy that was held 1000 years ago." No, dumbass, it's not. How is that people who claim religion should be taught to their children be so ignorant of religion, religious institutions, and religious texts? The "philosophies" you speak of are habitually a topic of debate among scholars of theology (for all of these religions you named) and has been for centuries. (cont)
yupper99 4 years ago
contemporary interpretatons of Christian philosophies are shaped by major traditions, movements and debates in the history of Christian theology. Second, I didn't say anything about teaching "children." I am talking about post-sec education. (cont)

I'm talking about HIGH SCHOOL not college stupid. And my comment above was sarcasm... HENCE THE /SARCASM.
cujothekitten 4 years ago
Well, how is anyone to know it was sarcasm when we are reading texts typed out. Its no reason to call me stupid if in fact you wouldnt be able to tell if anyone wasnt able to sense the sarcasm because it isnt spoken, merly typed. And what was with the whole insult anyways?
reaperj06221986 4 years ago
How are you supposed to know it was sarcasm? I don't know many it has something to do with the /SARCASM thing... did you see that? It's typed right out there for you. Also I wasn't calling you stupid I was calling yupper stupid.
cujothekitten 4 years ago
oh ok, so u werent referring to me? ok man end the hostility... i didnt know who u r were calling yupper stupid. but by the way, do u agree with yupper on the stuff that concerns the church.... then he is right.
reaperj06221986 4 years ago
Seriously. Most countries have some kind of theology class I don't get why America doesn't have one. With all the issues going on in the world today you'd think we'd be talking about how religion affects government policy... The PC police need to wake up and see they're holding our kids back. They don't need to pray but they do need to learn about religion. I'm an atheist by the way.
cujothekitten 4 years ago
They do, but SA conveniently deleted my post pointing out the fact that they do. They don't just have theology or religious studies courses, they have departments and programs. Anyways, considering that Christian philosophers like Aquinas and Augustine are part of the "canon" in most political theory and philosophy courses, there is simply no basis for SA's paranoia
yupper99 4 years ago
I'm talking about high school not college. Obviously college has theology classes.
cujothekitten 4 years ago
This is exactly what my deleted post was trying to point out: selective presentation of evidence, decontextualization of isssue, and conflation and generalization. Most HS in NA don't teach classes on "gender studies" or "queer studies." These courses are certainly not "proliferating" throughout HS curriculums....
yupper99 4 years ago
Halfway through the video he switches to college curriculum and that's where his points about gender studies and queer studies comes in (which I'm perfectly ok with for the most part). Where I take issue is the first portion where high school students aren't able to learn religious history or philosophy, which is an important aspect to learning about our world and culture.
cujothekitten 4 years ago
Find me one public i.e. - taxpayer supported - college or university in the United States that does not offer women's, African American or gay studies. I never said these courses were offered in high school, just that this philosophy that is explicit at the college level also informs primary education. Yupper is in denial. Christophobia's a bitch.
southernavenger 4 years ago
Your arguments are convuluted. 1) Why shouldn't any reputable uni offer a course on gender, race, or sexuality (which, by the way, is not the sole purview of Women's Studies, AA Studies, or Queer Studies), when these are themes covered even by "traditional" literature in philosophy and political theory (have you read Plato at all?); 2) What is that in relation to an entire DEPARTMENT of Theology or Religious Studies? Are you saying that people shouldn't study race, gender, or sexuality at all?
yupper99 4 years ago
My point is that traditional liberal arts education never compartmentalized general study into identity groups - Thomas Jefferson never studied "women's" or "gay" history, but just plain old history. Identity politics is very much a modern phenomenon and is indicative of the philosophy (or religion) of political correctness that dominates the modern academy, intelligentsia, politics and culture. This is PURELY a Western preoccupation.
southernavenger 4 years ago
Oh, the way, identity politics was fashionable in maybe the 70's and 80's. Now it's generally under attack in academia, by so-called "post-whatever" theories that usually draw extensively from continental philosophy. Identity politics is still quite fashionable in many institutional setings outside of NA, they actually think that's the most cutting edge stuff to learn. So no, it's not a "purely western preoccupation."
yupper99 4 years ago
3) of course the curriculum at secondary level is influenced by post-secondary level curriculum--that's where HS teachers are educated (duh..). But there is no "take over" by "women's studies" or "AA studies" in relations to theology or religious studies, because all of these SS disciplines are ostracized by the natural sciences in HS and the PS-secondary level.
yupper99 4 years ago
It's just a bit shocking to me how someone (eg. SA) is so ready to comment authoritatively on something they know so little about. Maybe do some research next time--that's what they are supposed to teach in uni...
Grade for this video: F
yupper99 4 years ago
Well, the real reason they won't teach classes on sexulaity and race in highschools is because of the classes being called racist or sexist. Because in those classes, it would probe both the pros and cons of races and sexuality. People don't like it when a certain races historical skeletons are unearthed and get mad call people racist or sexist.
reaperj06221986 4 years ago
Heh, that's right SA, exercise your youtube rights to censorship and delete my comments about your manipulation of facts. As we all know, those rights trump the constitutional rights of the freedom of expression you claim you so cherish. I call BS.
yupper99 4 years ago

1LilFirecracker 4 years ago
Honestly, do you believe that people are that into themselves that they don't know the CORRECT thing to do? I think you Christians have this delusional reasoning down to a fault that MOST average Americans are "spiritually and morally" bankrupt when the fact is that MOST of us are really just getting sick and tired of listening to Christers preach 24/7/365 just because they THINK they can.

they don;t think they can. They have that right in this country. You're preaching your disdain for them right now.
