  • @junkiemunkie1000

Look for "lute" in wikipedia, then the chapter : tuning convention

You'll have all the tuning possible ;-)

    Here it is in Dm...

    ;-)

    Val

  • excuse me Val....is this a 11 courses lute or 12 courses or 13 courses? thank you

    p.s: amazing plaing like ever!!!!!

  • @Mr98giuliano

This is a 13 courses (but this piece could be played on a 11...)

  • how long did it take you to learn the lute

    ~harryo~

  • I'm playing lute since the 80' and guitar first since the age of 12 (66)

    ;-)

    Val

  • @Luthval I'm getting my first lute today

    ~harryo~

  • Wonderful music and execution, as usual.

Thank you so much for sharing with us!

  • Thanks.

I have to re-do this one with better sound recording one day...

    Val

  • Wow man i love that.. i like this song very much (heard it off a game mod) which got me intrested in the song and wow the way you play it and the instrument.. wish i had 4 hands because i'd give it 4 thumbs up

  • It is a famous air and there are so many versions of it ;-)

I'm glad you like this one ;-)

    Val

  • How does it feel to play something like that :)

  • Hard because this is not easy, and good because it is beautiful

    Val ;-)

  • Felicitaciones por maravillosa version en Laud Barroco, gracias por tan bello regalo

    Roberto Torres Vazquez

  • Gracias ;-)

    V.

  • How did you learn to play and where did you get your lute. Ive wanted to play a lute for awhile but i dont have a lute and dont know how to play

    any tips?

  • First try to look for "Lute Society" of your country in google... then folow the links to makers, teachers and so....

try also Wayne Cripps web site (also google on his name) many useful informations...

    Good luck

    Val

  • There's nothing particularly wrong with synthesizers, in my opinion, but the fact that beautiful tones like this can scarcely be heard outside of one makes me very sad.

  • BEAUTIFULL. THANK YOU

  • The composer of these pieces is Marin Marais. Later, other composers, like Robert de Visee, Lully, Corelli ecc. has played this music for various instrumenst! Great Luthval and great Marais:-)

  • you rules... youuuuuu rrrrruuuuuuleeesss

    Val 4 president XD

    Bye......

  • nice realy...but it anoyed me somethimes that you are everywhere, its like there is no more lute players.....dont take ofence,

    Val ;-)

  • WOW!

    Wounderful

The most beautiful instrument ever existed.

  • Thanks ;-)

    Val

  • Is it Rebert de visee who wrote this?

I really liked the peice anyways

    cheers!

  • No, this one is anonymous. Robert de Visée said there was so many versions of Folies d'Espagne that he does not want to add his own.

    Regards,

    Val

  • WOW!!! hats off to you sir! I love this piece, i had to play it on guitar for one of my college finals about 8 years ago. Thanks for sharing such a gift.

  • this is your best piece

  • Its corelli´s follies huh? :)

  • no ;-)

  • Hello. This is not anonymous. The composer is Antonio Martin y Coll, spanish friar who lived between 17th and 18th centuries.

  • There are so many versions of this tune, some far from the XV century, some later to the XVII, and also some recent ones, some anonymous, some composed by great names as Corelli, Marin Marais and so on... This one is anonymous.

    ;-)

    Val

  • D'accord. Sorry for my ignorance. My question is then: Is it known the origin of this piece?

  • The origin is a popular ground (accord schema) call "La Gamba", used in many dances or songs. The earlier seems to be at the end of the XVth century but maybe there are older versions in medieval music. Look for Jordi Savall CD : Folias, where are played many versions (included Marin Marais, Corelli, and Martin Y Coll)

    V. ;-)

  • I just heard one by CPE Bach on a clavichord. Then there is the 19th century piano one by Liszt.

    Are you also a painter?

  • My favorite piece of lute music.

  • I really adore this one! You are one of my favorites on youtube. I'm always happy when you upload another lute video!

Do you know of good places to purchase quality lute kits? My grandfather wants to build one from a kit for me. (How kind of him!) So, any help on places to buy (preferably baroque) lute kits would be most wonderful. :)

  • Hello,

about kits, I only know renaissance kits (look on the net for the early music shop, in England) Or try the luthiers guilde for plans...

You also can find good students lutes (like this one I'm using here, made by Didier Jarny)

    Good luck

    Val ;-)

  • it's so beatiful the baroque music, and much if it's play in there isntruments, congratulations for your music and your passion for the music.

    i'm from chile.

  • Thanks for you comment. It is a pleasure to share this passion (even if the video quality is not top... and playing too...)

    ;-)

    Val

  • were can i get the viola music for this? please tell me

  • Look for the sheet music from the Movie Tous Les Matins Du Monde or you can find the Full Folies d'Espangne by Marin Marais just about anywhere for cello or Viola Da Gamba

  • Do you want viola music or Viola da gamba music? Cuz if i know which one you want i can point you in the right direction.

  • Viola

  • Hmmmm. im not very sure anymore, there are a million versions of la folia, but i dont know if this is a written one or he's just improvising on it.

  • WOAH! thats a lot of strings

how long did it take you to learn?

  • I start guitar at the age of 12, lute in 1980...

    ;-)

    Val

  • wow, that was a fast reply :)

hom much do lutes cost (what can they range from?)

    ollie

  • A proffesional lute could be about 4-5000£

    A Very good one 25-3500£

    The cheapest 8course 1500£

(It can be very diffrent, though this is my experience of it)

  • all of your pieces are wonderful.

  • beautiful performance, excellent character for the piece

  • The maestro is correct. This was composed way before Lully's time. Another excellent performance. Encore!!!

  • J'adore cette musique. Comme celles de Gaspar Sanz et d'autres compositeurs anciens.

  • It is I think omposed by Jean-Baptiste Lully. My favourite composer! clemsimu is right. You can find a nice version of les folies d'espagne on the Le Roi Danse soundtrack.

  • The theme does exist long long time before Lully... and as I said, many composers use this theme for variations (Ortiz aroud 1550, Lully was not born, Marais, Corelli etc...)

    ;-)

    val

  • Hi, very nice sound. Have you heard The variations of the folias of Fernando Sor. It's a guitar piece. I played it for my final exam some years ago. Someday i'll get myself a lute, they're hard to come by around here. Greetings from Perú

  • It's composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully I think

  • The theme of Folias exist since the XV century under many forms (in Spain of course, but also Italy, France and England) Most known versions are by Diego Ortiz, Gaspar Sanz, Corelli and Marin Marais. This one is anonymous, from an English Ms.

  • beautiful music.

this goes right to my favorites : )

  • i"m allso big fan of Sanz Gaspar

  • smilar version is sanz gaspar -

    espagnoleta

  • So many version of the Folias... Marin Marais, Corelli etc...

I love gaspar Sanz music (and he wrote also some folias...)

  • C'est très beau, merci

  • hi,nice playing.can u tell whats band of lute u play,i would like to buy one like yours

  • most of actuall lute players do not use figgeta they just play it like a guitar

  • in lute , do you use your fingernails ? or just de top of the fingers.

  • I do not use nails.

Figgeta (if you mean thumb-index in passagios), is a renaissance technique, not use in baroque music. even if my hand is in thumb under position,as I'm mainly renaissance player, I do not use figgetas in baroque music. (but always in renaissance music !)

    Thanks for comments.

    Friendly,

    Val

    ;-)

  • thank you very much for the info. saludos desde mexico.

  • Very nice performance of this music from my country.

Could you please tell me exactly which folias are?

I think I can remember an orchestral version very

very nice, but I am not able to locate it.

  • Hello,

This version is an anonymous one in the Oxford Ms #F576. But there are many version, by Diego Ortiz and Marin Marais for Viola da Gamba, by Corelli for violin, and this theme is also in Liszt "Rhapsodie espagnole" and in Rachmaninov "Variations sur un thème de Corelli"... (some others.. Carl Nielsen ...)

    ;-)

    Val

  • Thank you for the answer. I think I have just found another version from Purcell.

  • Nice playing, very relaxing.

  • Indeed it encourages me, i'll by a lute and a wig....

  • another musical instrument i must one day get my hands on (and play lute music on the lute, and not on guitar).

If this is old lute music, then i wouldnt play it this freely (not so romantic), but rather more in the style of the music itself (renaissance, baroque). But that of course is my musical interpretation. nice playing nevertheless

  • Yes it is "old" lute music, from baroque period. Don't you think they also play freely at this period ?. I do encourage you to play lute if you like this instrument, it's magic...

  • vraiment beau... les peintures et la musique!

  • Do you have that tuned to d-minor?

  • Yes. Tuned to normal tuning for baroque lute, juste have to change tune on basses sometimes according to the key.

    ;-)

    Val

  • Do the tuning pegs ever wear out or slip? Do you know anyone selling a decent used Baroque lute? Thanks.

  • C'est vraiment un instrument merveilleux et tu en joues trés bien.(Avec la chemise qui flashe je ne t'avais pas reconnu!)Merci pour toutes ces vidéos .

  • Tres beau.

  • Merci !

  • Bravooo very very nice piece

  • Thank you Maestro. From you it means a lot.

    Valéry

  • МUCH better sound that in LeCanon too.

  • Yes, Le Canon (version 1), will be removed when I will record it again.

    regards, dear RT.

    Val

  • marvelous

  • Yes, this piece is really some good music, on viol, harp, harpsichord or even lute... I love this theme of folias.

  • Folias... lovely song. very nice.

i am learning folia from Alessandro Scarlatti.

i will post it when ready.

    thanks.

  • I'm waiting for your Post !

  • Don't worry Mr. Valérie:

We do know you play very well!

  • Special dedicace to Azalais... ;-)

  • I am honored by your dedicace... Thank you so much for this beautiful piece. Merci, V.
