Im 17 years old and I <3 this song. and roots.. I THANK MY MOM FOR OPENING MY EARS TO ALL MUSIC AT A YOUNG AGE....im glad im not like alot of teens now.
Letta's Voice is amazing and perfect for bringing this pensive song to life. It pulls emotions from the core of the heart and brings tears to my eyes. As wonderful as Makeba was, I have to say that Letta's voice has something in it that Makeba's did not. I love both voices though and I'm happy that there are recordings around to fill the void. Quincy Jones killed on this one.
To those old ones...who have traveled on...you are not forgotten...you live on in the fearlessness of the young...the old African will never die...can never be defeated
This was a gifted African songstress who epitomised the Mariam Makeba-led africanization of the American music scene in the early 70s. Wonder what she does with herself now?Great pioneer.
These are good Kwanzaa songs for black radio stations to play. Thank you I been looking for this song and the album. This is a collectors item. Thank you for putting this up.
i discovered letta mbulu, as a young kid, growing up in sierra leone, west africa.there was this fantastic album produced by quincy jones.must have been mid seventies.contains a beautiful ballad called mbuza or buza.never heard those songs anymore. somebody pls post some of those songs if u've got them.that album should be reissued.
Lost my Letta Mbulu album "many rains ago" with its entire collection of wonderful songs *still have cover*. Wish I could find it again, but it was out of print for years every time I checked. I often grew angry about our abduction from our homeland, especially when I was young with no means to travel back. I played this song over and over and it was always uplifting.
@TjuhuTiy ..What a shame!..Holding onto the sleeve in hope of being reunited, trust me I’ve done the same in the past, so I do understand.
That whole period of African History was indeed a very painful one; the negative affects are sadly still prevalent today, as they shall be tomorrow!..Appreciated!
this is a really beautiful song! its actually the first time i ever heard it. i feel kinda sad that i havent heard it yet because it is so moving to so many people. :')
@ab10ification..Thanks for checking this out, there’s so much beautiful music from the past which I’ve only recently discovered though You Tube. Sometimes a new discovery hits the spot and touches the heart unlike anything from the present day!. Cheers!
True story: A teen in 1985, I was interested in a young lady who took dance classes in S.Dallas. I'd pick her up, take her to the classes, watching as she rehearsed. Her teacher choreographed a piece from this very song, in which where the girl was the lead dancer. I never forgot the song, or my memories of the girl dancing to it. We later drifted apart, as will happen, but the young dancer, later went into the music biz becoming a famous R&B artist. Today, you know her, as Erykah Badu.
@rickytheaxe Just lovely, I can see Erykah performing this, I just wish I could see her do it. I have seen her dance, she is a very talented person. I love everything she does. I love this song.
found after looking for 5 years! profoundly moving, an astounding song! i feel this in my soul, for today as much as the past, thank you for sharing this treasure!
I remember hearing this song for the first time and crying like an infant. If ever a song touches the soul and reflects the despair, sorrow and angony of the human spirit, THIS is it. God bless Qunicy Jones and Ms Mbulu for bringing this magnificent piece to us.
My Dad had this soundtrack (Album) as a child. I remember listening to this song over and over again and memorizing the words. It moved me to tears; even as a child. Wow, I was so happy to see someone had posted this. :o) Wonderful!
@OforJC, Even as a child you had great taste in Music. This really is such a Beautiful track from one of my most treasured albums, the Yoruba version on the album is just as emotive,...Cheers!
Oh my goodness this is so vey beautiful and moving. I have always been a Miriam Makeba fanatic, but when I heard Letta Mbulu in the seventies I had to admit that her voice is something to be reconed with. I love her voice it has a resonance that can't be duplicted. This song and "Carry On" are outstanding !! Here's to Miriam and Letta.
@lantavian1,Yes my friend two of South Africa's finest singers,Quincy made the right choice with Letta, her voice is perfect for this track!..also thanks for the "Carry On" nod!
This beautiful song is one of my all time favorites. Everytime I hear it or think about it, I close my eyes and picture everything she sings about and think of my ancestors. It brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for posting it.
@aimalfred1 ((Pressing my face to the screen)) Wow! I real record player? ((sigh)) I miss having one. I do have a turn table but the needle was like $50. I may still go and invest in it. I miss the sound of the LP cracking :)
I am trying to find Quincy Jones' Roots Medley that hit the charts in 1977. I'd like to listen to it. Can't seem to find it in any of the stores or online. According to my Pop music chart book, this song was on the flip side.
Good people, Thanks very much for the Positive comments about this Beautiful composition, belive me,they are very much appreciated. ...Kounya, I'll be in JA very soon!! Watch Out!!!
I was about 10 years old when I first heard this. I had the roots soundtrack on record. I would cry a lot listening to this as a child. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes it is pretty deep and can bring abhout tears if you really listen to all the words..and of course if you are African or African American.....beautiful and deep lyrics.
I was trying to remember when i first heard this....the National Dance theatre company of Jamaica has a work entitled the Crossing and this is the music for one set... and It was performed for Nelson and Winnie Mandel during a visit back in 1991... I watched on Tv and the music was so powerful and appropriate for the Mandelas...later found out the name of the track....thanks again for posting.
A friend of mine from back in the 70s found me on facebook and sent me this song. I used to love the "Roots" album and would sing this song all the time!!
Such a beautiful, sad song. Letta has such a rich resonance in her voice, this is so touching.
