I love this site to explore new music, but this trip to bizarro world wasn't worth it. Different doesn't always equal good. and no, he can't really sing or play the banjo well. So waht's he doing here?
I'm sad to see there are so many negative comments on this wonderful video. Julian Koster is one of the most talented individuals that I've ever had the pleasure of encountering, and I think if more people had an outlook like him the world would be a better place.
This is great. It's no longer Christmas, but nonetheless I get all warmth and love from his playing! The last song is adorable! This video made me smile :)
Advice for the younger generation: shut your mouth, close your eyes and enjoy this great tiny desk concert. Music tapes is an underrated group, Everyone is so obsessed with the way people dress . I don't understand this folks educated by Mtv...
It really bothers me that people are being so judgmental toward someone who has had such a profound impact on the indie and folk music scene. This guy is partially responsible for In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. As far as I'm concerned, he is a legend.
the music tapes are one of the greatest indie-pop bands ever, and definitely a highlight of the elephant six. julian is a modern day willy wonka. thank you for this performance, npr. i hope you will have them back on again.
I hate to say it because the distinction basically applies to me, every subscriber to this channel and every npr listener under 35, but this is the most LATFH moment of my entire life.
His talk is amusing but the singing was horrendous. I'm sure lyrics were meaningful but there's nothing good for the ears in there. I've seen dogs that sing better than that.
Seriously? Please NPR,enough! I know you can do better. How about The Black Lillies? Or Carrie Rodriguez? We shouldn't be subjected to 20 lame performers to hear one good one.
zero musical skill. zero singing ability. zero meaningful lyrics or intelligent commentary. Just some poor boy performing something he wrote at "special" school. hooray for letting the retards participate in tinydesk. Good for you NPR.

He reminds me, at times, of Daniel Johnston's eccentric behavior, and his undeniable raw talent.
