Point is, when Nagai made that statement( the Getter is sword and Mazin is shield) he was referring to the Getter from the anime, which is ironically the weakest version of Getter, since he had nothing to do with the manga plots. The manga version of Getter Emperor is stronger than STTGL when it(Emperor) is only using a small amount of it's true power and Emperor at its strongest is big enough to consume the universe.

@ChaosZack08 I agree with you on most everything there other than New Getter being the weakest. He was able to produce a Final Getter Tomahawk by himself, while Armageddon's Shin Getter needed Shin Getter Dragon's energy to be around him. I do agree New Getter certainly isn't the strongest. Shin Getter Blew up Jupiter with a Stoner Sunshine in the Manga. You already adressed the power of Getter Emporer, so need I say more? But there is a non-canonical Getter Emporer who's bigger than TTGL.

@PhongChangster Yeah you're right I guess the Amageddon and the 2nd OVA Shin Getter are the weakest versions of Shin Getter. I know about the non-cannon Emporer, the one who turned God into a galaxy in Anthology correct? Manga Shin Getter is the one who evolves into Emperor at the end of Go so it being the strongest isn't up for debate. Also, did you know that Dynamic Pro has just finished scanlating the Getter Robo Bible? Finally, non-Japanese fans will be able to know all about Getter!

You guys do realize that Go Nagai isn't the author of Getter Robo right? The only thing Nagai did was give Ken Ishikawa some advice during the time of the original manga regarding the art and the combining robot idea, which was originally meant for Mazinger Z. Ishikawa was great friends with Nagai so he gave him half the credit. However, once the Getter Robo Go manga was made Getter was nothing like Mazin.

He stabbed himself to counter the mind power the gods were using on him. i have seen a few anime were they use this technique were they concentrate on pain to over come the mind control. for example transformers victory blacker stabs his leg to counter hellbat's mind powers and the movie ninja scroll jubei kibagami was hypnotised by the snake lady and when he got stabbed by a shuriken it broke the spell.

In the first eppisode of New Getter, the doc's son begins to turn into an oni and proceeds to assist them in attacking the lab. He stabs himself in the shoulder in order to at least temporarily regain his senses.

That bit is referenced here in the final eppisode, where Ryoma does the same thing in order to come to his senses.

Why is it called getter energy?

In the original series it was a pun on "Gattai" (combine), since it was the first show to feature combining robots. Later series gave Getter Energy the ability to allow mecha to combine with whatever the hell they want, even if it doesn't make sense, and it'll still work. So combining is very much at the heart of Getter Robo, hence it being in the name.
