Riku's always the one that's been constantly active in the storyline... I mean all the way from the beginning in BBS. Chosen, then longed for a way off the island, looked for kairi, roamed the realm of darkness, found castle oblivion, and then ran around in a black cloak till Sora woke up, then helped him through his second quest then teamed up to beat Xemnas.

Sora and Kairi were out of the picture either sleeping or just stuck on the sidelines for a whole year lol.

he is not blind, he uses that because he is using the power of darkness

Since his eyes can not lie he can stay himself. but when he put off the blindfold the power of darkness will overwhelmed him and he will be able to use the power of darkness. But than he may lose control of himself. At the end he says he has no other choice than to use this power even if it would changes him forever.
