Yep, we've been using toilet paper rolls, the air flow was tearing them and sprading around. Those flying through the cloud of pieces of paper with the speed of about 50 m/s were seeing it as the laser rifle beams ;)

But yes, holding the paper roll tight and making circling moves with the wrists should provide the laser effect ;))))
