This castelvania seems to be waaay to much confuse, of course is beatiful to see all the graphic in the game, but i am the gamer that like simplicity and having to level up my personal skill instead of the character in the game.
But the gameplay is nowhere even anywhere near as good as Portrait of Ruin. Nor Dawn of Sorrow for that matter, in spite of that dumb and annoying stylus sealing system gimmick.
Overall Ecclesia is flash over substance. But it WAS an interesting experiment. Still the worst Castletroid (gameplay wise) far as I'm concerned unfortunately. But an interesting try.
I think way to many gamers are way to impressed by how a game LOOKS. Alot of people consider Symphony of Night the best Castletroid, and their arguments always boil down to how it looks prettier and sounds prettier then the others. (or how it was the first. Also not really an argument.)
Gameplaywise I'd say Portrait of Ruin and Aria of Sorrow are the best Castletroids, even if some other Castletroids may LOOK better.
And Circle of the Moon looks unimpressive but it's a good game.
I also gotta note on a personal taste level that whilst in Portrait of Ruin I liked Wind's Quests (It felt appropriate and vampire-hunter like. Young Vampire Hunters taking optional training missions from the ghost of an experienced vampire hunter.) But I HATED those damn villagers in Ecclesia. Bunch of ungrateful demanding, rude twats.
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as the Castlevania series. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
To be honest, I'm not to much of a fan of Symphony of the Night, I just find the game-play to be a tad' slow, even with the supposedly 'fast' weapons, just an opinion.
@Dedonlogo Fair and honest opinion and I LOVE SotN :) Can't wait to try some of these newer ones they do seem faster from what i've seen...i'm late to everything hahaha.
@NightIIIJester If you love SOTN you should play: Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia. They are all based on the gamedesign principles of it and are all very good.
I never played these and got Portait of ruin to have something to play on 3ds till more games come out and haven't beaten it yet and already looking at this review gonna pick it up tomorrow. Man where have I been? lol
I, amongst others, but why you would piss on Order of Ecclesia, which is quite amazing in reinventing the dusty, old Metroidvania and push another Castlevania is seriously beyond me.
Most of the enemy from SOTN appear in this game which is one of the reason I love this game, the story takes place after SOTN. Graphics, colors, are amazing, Gameplay amazing, RPG elements, mission adventure, are all the cream of the crop. My favorite game next to SOTN. Why doesn't PSP have great games like the DS does? The only great I found worthy was Dracula x Chronicles because it has Rondo of Blood and SOTN. I'm getting the 3DS.
This game is my favourite DS CV (maybe of all time) and reminds me most of Simons Quest. It really grows on you once you play for 2-3 hrs. The Glyph System by incorporating weapons+spells+super attacks with the use of MP is more balanced than the Soul System from AoS/ DoS imo. It also means you have to be smart to play it. I'd say OOE> Sorrows/ SoTN. Though SoTN wins on nostalgia+originality(inv. castle) & Sorrows win for story+ plot twists+character development(esp AoS). OOE just does it all
I have a copy of this game, and i agree w/ IGN (and you guys) on OoE. The only flaw i can find is that it's hard for first-timers, but once you got the hang of it it's less harder than it looks. 5 stars for this game. :D
@StevnFoo3423 did you play Castlevania: SotN? That explains a lot, the most famous game, no whip was used, except with Richard Belmont, the unlockable character, so do it when finished with the good end.
This game is truly amazing. However, It gets insanely hard once you go inside the castle. The medusa heads return with spikes in the floor, and if your "r" button doesn't work, your screwed.

@OnionsAndPandas Not to mention the targeting system doesn't work most of the time your guy will target the enemy furthest away getting owned by the closer one or fail to target entirely. I only play those on my PC via emulation where I can save state before important areas to cut down on replaying completed stuff. It's pretty sad when I have to save state because I can't see where I'm goin or am not able to aim my whip at an enemy.
@Luigi84289 Actually, I've never played the C64, and when I said worst one I meant on the ds xD I did enjoy the game, don't get me wrong. Hey, my level of skill is not a guage for how good the game is, that's true. But loads of other people have said the same thing as me, plus, I have completed the game, so if I suggested it was bad because I sucked at it, that was my fault. I completed the game.
@Luigi84289 You can play as a chick in all of them as a matter of fact.
Once you've got the good ending on Dawn of Sorrow, you get Julius mode, then go to where Yoko is around and you get her as well, and you can play as Yoko, and of course you can play as Charlotte in Portrait of Ruin :)
i like the glyph system in this your mp is stamina more than just magic power every time you swing your sword or us a spell you lose mp, but it quickly regenerates so in heated battle you'll get times where you have to pause and defend for a quick moment, but at the same time you always have your magic available
I am playing through this game now, I am having allot of fun with it. I like the mood of the graphics, it really pops out at you, the music is a bit repetitive. But I really do like it, though I would have loved a bit more story in the beginning. Right now it is mostly: stupid man took my magick sword and kidnapped the villagers so now I the skimpily clad heroine is going to stop him kind of thing. The plot so far is rather simple, but it is ok.
@Sannin86 It is, but it's a honest challenge. It's not like the old NES games where a respawned enemy will knock you off the steps and cost you a life...the difficulty comes from old-school pattern recognition and quick reflexes. It's the kind of difficulty gamers like; not frustrating, but hard enough to keep you coming back and trying again.
It really adds to the game. Castlevania was known back in the day for its difficulty and I love that they returned to that with OoC.
@Skyrift I don't ever remembering respawning enemies in the NES games, and are you implying those WEREN'T about quick reflexes and pattern recognition?
@Sannin86 It is not hard. I have coordination difficulties due to a syndrome that I have so I really suck at computer games but I am not having to much trouble with this one.
if they didnt have such good gameplay in their reviews i wouldnt even bother. IGN you guys suck ass at reviewing and you guys bitch about everything known to man.
@Democod I liked it a lot. The only problem I had with it was Dracula. I hate how they did not give him a second form. I believe that final battles are more epic if they take place in two stages like in Portrait of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow. The difficulty wasn't bad once you got used to it. I pretty much wiped the floor with all the enemies. The story was awesome too.
this game is great! but i wished it was longer its pretty short :/ and i wasnt a big fan of the Glyth system but the music is one of the best in the series
This game is hella hard, I mean, i couldnt beat the giant skeleton for a long time, then that water girl took me like 15 trys, then Albus and Barlowe...The bosses went from easy to hard to easy to Horrifyling Hard to easy...
Old school style games will always win, because even if they are NOT in HD, or have photo-realistic graphics like some of these games these days, the art style and animation style can look so much cooler. Mix that with some old school pin point control scheme, and you've got yourself some good games. This is why people STILL play their NES, and SNES and rarely play their PSX's. Those games usually try to push graphics for the era and now look horrible and there is nothing to remember them by.
@jarannalli you raise a good point, but there are flaws to most of the games on older consoles, like in old castlevania games; you got death pits coupled by knock back.
I understand your point, but watch some speed run vids, man. When one gains skill enough to play these games, they really rock at them, despite death pits and knock backs.
what I like about this game is the difficulty. It can be challenging as shit. Boss battles can be hard but never impossible. I also like how they reverted back to that gothic art style rather than that shitty anime look:P Though when it comes to content, compared to Portrait of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow it is rather short.
I might be alone in this, but I like side quests, little secrets, and just loading my inventory with all kinds of shit. I'm not saying this game didn't have this stuff. But compared to POR. It was short. I think mainly because of the weapons and the limited item drops. I like the glyph idea. But I think they should have separated it up. By that I mean use glyphs for magic and swords and shit for...swords and shit. I hated finding the sword Melio Secare, and knowing i couldn't find a better one.
Complaining About The DS Graphics? Your Dumb... Promise, Are You A New School? Because Old School Always Wins.... I Guess You Belong To The Retard Category.
"meat and potatoes of the game, which oddly enough is in the back half of the adventure"
Did this reviewer ever play a video game before this review? More often than not, a game will be the most rewarding in the second half. Besides that all of his complaints seem redundant. He mentions that a quarter of the glyphs have similar trees. Well there are 100 glyphs so I don't see the problem.
@Hapafull i loved others more portrait had sisters mode and richter maria and maybe old axe? same as dawn of sorrow dawn had the best rpg feel imo portrait needed co-op not with another player but changing chars and duel techs rule none of the castles for ds is the same! ecclesia was the hardest tho imo :þ
Shanoa's sprites are beautiful and very complicated and the glyph system is very renewing. I just wish there was one big Castlevania instead of all these small maps. I mean, not only are many of them very linear, it's also that all you need is to make your way from left to right and then never come back. That's a main thing why I like DoS the best of all NDS Castlevania games. I also wish every enemy 'dropped' a glyph and that all a dem glyphs were of comparable effectiveness.
You're still in Transylvania. What's the big deal about having different places other than the Castle? Granted, they're small, but it ties with the whole " new order on the rise to bring down Dracula other than the Belmonts theme". It's like a test to see if the order had any chance. Also fits the morning sun theme. The game still stands pretty well in my opinion, I don't care what anyone says. Also, the difficulty gets you more into it. PS. fuck the "cute" anime bullshit in DoS and PoR
You know with all these awesome 2D games, it's feeling to me like the DS is the Super Nintendo's true spiritual successor, not the GBA. I love the GBA but the DS just has far more awesome titles.
I'm liking this game a lot more than Dawn of Sorrow. DOS wasn't bad, but I didn't like the weapons. The only powerful weapons were the axes and other slow weapons and fighting with them was LAME. The glyphs in this game are much more fun, and I enjoy it a lot. Plus the graphics are better, and I like the shorter stages instead of just one giant castle.
i have actually never cared of graphics that much, the way i think it a good game dont have to got good graphic,if it has a good story and gameplay of course it awesome for me:)
I've been looking for another good Castlevania DS game, and I'm glad that the reviews for this are all positive. I was a bit disappointed in PoR, but this looks like a fantastic game, and I hope to get it next time I'm out shopping.
The music in this game is wonderfull. I love the music when you´re in the water with the ships. Don´t remember what it´s called. The story isn´t really anything new. This is the hardest Castlevania on the DS. But it´s a really good one definatly worth buying it´s my 1# favourite on the DS. If you´ll a Castlevania fan like me buy it.
and, I would not say that I hate it, but they are nothing compared to SotN or SNES versions, at least the history is good, I finished LoI and CoD to see and it was a bit interesting but not enough, 2D is for sure better.
@affvsfseusnoob LOI and COD are good games. Not great but good. The controls are tight and responsive. You can at least play them. That's more than I can say about the worst vania's.
not really, they are pretty much all independant, a sure shot is to play Symphony of the night on PSone or PSX emulator before, it's really the best 2d castlevania there is.
@welshsamson123 , most of the castlevania games dont follow each other so dont worry about it. plus it teaches you controls and what not in the beginning
i beat the game and its actually pretty challenging dare i say more challenging than portrait of ruin. and yea i agree it is a really good game so get ur glyphs out time to kill dracula possibly for the 1,000,000th time ever
Thumbs up if you think the 3DS will follow in the DS's footsteps and be a far better platform for Castlevania than the PSP (Vita)?

But loads of other people have said the same thing as me, plus, I have completed the game, so if I suggested it was bad because I sucked at it, that was my fault. I completed the game.
OnionsAndPandas 1 year ago
@OnionsAndPandas Oh in that case I agree. The previous 2 DS titles are way better though I do like playing as a chic.
Luigi84289 1 year ago
@Luigi84289 You can play as a chick in all of them as a matter of fact.
Once you've got the good ending on Dawn of Sorrow, you get Julius mode, then go to where Yoko is around and you get her as well, and you can play as Yoko, and of course you can play as Charlotte in Portrait of Ruin :)
OnionsAndPandas 1 year ago
i like the glyph system in this your mp is stamina more than just magic power every time you swing your sword or us a spell you lose mp, but it quickly regenerates so in heated battle you'll get times where you have to pause and defend for a quick moment, but at the same time you always have your magic available

I really miss the deeper exploration on this game, but god damn it is fun! The difficulty makes it so addictive.

this game looks hard
Sannin86 1 year ago
@Sannin86 It is, but it's a honest challenge. It's not like the old NES games where a respawned enemy will knock you off the steps and cost you a life...the difficulty comes from old-school pattern recognition and quick reflexes. It's the kind of difficulty gamers like; not frustrating, but hard enough to keep you coming back and trying again.
It really adds to the game. Castlevania was known back in the day for its difficulty and I love that they returned to that with OoC.
Skyrift 1 year ago
@Skyrift I don't ever remembering respawning enemies in the NES games, and are you implying those WEREN'T about quick reflexes and pattern recognition?
baigandine 4 months ago
@Sannin86 It is not hard. I have coordination difficulties due to a syndrome that I have so I really suck at computer games but I am not having to much trouble with this one.

Those games usually try to push graphics for the era and now look horrible and there is nothing to remember them by.
jarannalli 1 year ago
@jarannalli you raise a good point, but there are flaws to most of the games on older consoles, like in old castlevania games; you got death pits coupled by knock back.
PlayWii360tm 1 year ago
@PlayWii360tm
I understand your point, but watch some speed run vids, man. When one gains skill enough to play these games, they really rock at them, despite death pits and knock backs.
jarannalli 1 year ago
what I like about this game is the difficulty. It can be challenging as shit. Boss battles can be hard but never impossible. I also like how they reverted back to that gothic art style rather than that shitty anime look:P Though when it comes to content, compared to Portrait of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow it is rather short.
All in all I still love this game:D
Migzter05 1 year ago
I might be alone in this, but I like side quests, little secrets, and just loading my inventory with all kinds of shit. I'm not saying this game didn't have this stuff. But compared to POR. It was short. I think mainly because of the weapons and the limited item drops. I like the glyph idea. But I think they should have separated it up. By that I mean use glyphs for magic and swords and shit for...swords and shit. I hated finding the sword Melio Secare, and knowing i couldn't find a better one.

Best Castlevania DS Game is Portrait of Ruin, and then Dawn of Sorrow.

Hapafull 1 year ago

DrsJacksonn 1 year ago
You're still in Transylvania. What's the big deal about having different places other than the Castle? Granted, they're small, but it ties with the whole " new order on the rise to bring down Dracula other than the Belmonts theme". It's like a test to see if the order had any chance. Also fits the morning sun theme. The game still stands pretty well in my opinion, I don't care what anyone says. Also, the difficulty gets you more into it. PS. fuck the "cute" anime bullshit in DoS and PoR
Oneiroi729 1 year ago
@Oneiroi729 small places for the new adventurer( new potential hunters) which lead to greater things.
Oneiroi729 1 year ago
You know with all these awesome 2D games, it's feeling to me like the DS is the Super Nintendo's true spiritual successor, not the GBA. I love the GBA but the DS just has far more awesome titles.
RetroRepair 1 year ago
I'm liking this game a lot more than Dawn of Sorrow. DOS wasn't bad, but I didn't like the weapons. The only powerful weapons were the axes and other slow weapons and fighting with them was LAME. The glyphs in this game are much more fun, and I enjoy it a lot. Plus the graphics are better, and I like the shorter stages instead of just one giant castle.

Oh, so it was just a mistake, no problem ^-^
and, I would not say that I hate it, but they are nothing compared to SotN or SNES versions, at least the history is good, I finished LoI and CoD to see and it was a bit interesting but not enough, 2D is for sure better.
affvsfseusnoob 1 year ago
i wouldnt say they are the worst(castlevania judgement is), but compared to the other ones they are pretty bad
hiadan 1 year ago
@affvsfseusnoob LOI and COD are good games. Not great but good. The controls are tight and responsive. You can at least play them. That's more than I can say about the worst vania's.
