@thevindicaresbrother it depends on the planet more of; technically they're all conscripts in the sense that they are required to join; but many tend join the PDF and the best become Imperial Guard;
of course because the Imperium is so vast; it varies greatly, but what I do know is that the most guardsmen in the Imperial Guard do get a lot of training and the majority spend their lives fighting rebels that usually have inferior training then them(ironically often turn out to be PDFs)

@BuriRugby Both factions win battles and subsequently win wars. The Space Marines haven't won many battles because IG struggles in the entire galaxy, whereas the Space Marines fight fights in specific sectors. You can't deny that even though IG fights many wars, the Space Marines win wars just as effectively, perhaps more. Pointless to lift one above the other they both serve the Emperor with zeal and faith. The Adeptus Astartes have helped IG win wars and IG has supported the Adeptus Astartes.
@SuperSpammerbleh and both have common enemies: from ones that Outsmarts you(Eldar), ones that puts you in the bottom of the food chain(Tyranids), ones that drives you mad(Chaos forces), and ones that simply kills you(Orks)

I like Warhammer because EVERYTHING is delightfully OP and Halo because it's more normal, things are weaker, and only spartans are OP. I also hate Tau. They act all just and badass but under that crisis battlesuit there's a big fat pussy. I don't like Starwars fluff(I like 4-6 episodes) and Startrek. Everything seems too weak and skinny. But I don't deny how much they've done for science fiction.
@GovernorDerek I don't deny their strenght in numbers. I like their super heavy tanks and artellery, I love the fleet, but the guard infantry deserve way better weapons. The Imperial infantry probably has the poorest equipment of all factions in 40k but probably the strongest tanks not to talk about Titans if they get deployed or deathstrike missiles. Admit it everyone knows flak armor and lasguns are bad. That's why they compensate with heavy armor and numbers.

When there is no one else to defend the Imperium of man against the hordes of chaos and xenos, there is always thin green line of Imperial guard troopers standing between salvation and oblivion. Only in death does duty end!
I love that this song has actually become some-what of an anthem for the Imperial Guard. No-wonder though; it's grandeur suits the faction and its ideology. No matter the cost, victory will be attained.

the imperial guard are just lesser men, normal guys like you and me with some normal military training. and still they go againts creatures far beyond their minds to comprehend, can you imagine a guardsman fighting chaos deamons, or a 3 meters tall ork and still dont look back?. well thats what they show to the enemies of the imperium bravery and corage untill their deaths, balls of steel as you may call it, and lets not forget faith in the emperor.
A Guardsman has no special power armour, no ancient genetic mods, no prophecy or faith. He is but a man, like your and I. He is taken from a peasant world to fight a war he barely understands, armed with a rifle that fires miniature suns and might blow up in his hands because no-one remembers how it works. @thezeon451 But...they're expensive to train, pain in the asses to convince, a bit paranoid, not generally there when you need them, and they are a more greater threat when they betray the imperium. And built for combat? Everything in existance is built for combat in some way, willingly or unwillingly.
I have yet to hear of a single case of kaskrin or stormtrooper betray the imperium. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The only organization in the Imperium that has not had a single member fall to chaos is the Grey Knights chapter of space marines, and that's largely because if they had a weakness chaos could exploit, they would have died during the initiation process. The Imperial guard abandon the Imperium plenty. It's why individual regiments only have one specialty: to prevent betrayal on a wide scale.

@BuriRugby Both factions win battles and subsequently win wars. The Space Marines haven't won many battles because IG struggles in the entire galaxy, whereas the Space Marines fight fights in specific sectors. You can't deny that even though IG fights many wars, the Space Marines win wars just as effectively, perhaps more. Pointless to lift one above the other they both serve the Emperor with zeal and faith. The Adeptus Astartes have helped IG win wars and IG has supported the Adeptus Astartes.

I like Warhammer because EVERYTHING is delightfully OP and Halo because it's more normal, things are weaker, and only spartans are OP. I also hate Tau. They act all just and badass but under that crisis battlesuit there's a big fat pussy. I don't like Starwars fluff(I like 4-6 episodes) and Startrek. Everything seems too weak and skinny. But I don't deny how much they've done for science fiction.

@GovernorDerek I don't deny their strenght in numbers. I like their super heavy tanks and artellery, I love the fleet, but the guard infantry deserve way better weapons. The Imperial infantry probably has the poorest equipment of all factions in 40k but probably the strongest tanks not to talk about Titans if they get deployed or deathstrike missiles. Admit it everyone knows flak armor and lasguns are bad. That's why they compensate with heavy armor and numbers.

I don't understand why everyone loves the space marines? People think they are the true heroes of the Imperium? Imperial Guardsmen are the unsung heroes of the Imperium. A regiment of guardsmen would throw themselves out into the line of fire if they were ordered to. The tanks of the imperial guard are the best tanks in the Imperium. @thezeon451 But...they're expensive to train, pain in the asses to convince, a bit paranoid, not generally there when you need them, and they are a more greater threat when they betray the imperium. And built for combat? Everything in existance is built for combat in some way, willingly or unwillingly.
I have yet to hear of a single case of kaskrin or stormtrooper betray the imperium. Correct me if I'm wrong.

@ShrougerNite I know, i never said that traitor guardsman were as big a threat to the imperium individually in comparison to thier super human brethren, my point was in response to the person who said that he was unaware of any instance of storm troopers/Karskin renagades. I merely said that out of the several billion traitor guardsmen, surely some must have been from these backgrounds :)

@thevindicaresbrother You're wrong. Plain and simple. The only organization in the Imperium that has not had a single member fall to chaos is the Grey Knights chapter of space marines, and that's largely because if they had a weakness chaos could exploit, they would have died during the initiation process. The Imperial guard abandon the Imperium plenty. It's why individual regiments only have one specialty: to prevent betrayal on a wide scale.
