i am unable to see the genious. its more like a bunch of failed rhythms laid end on end than a "song" if i may call it. that can anyone explain this to me?
Lol what was he smoking....good question...pot? tobacco? =) who cares the performance was great and It's a new amazing creativity they bring in piano playin.
This is cool stuff, but all I have to say is WHERE IS THE REST OF THE CONCERT !!!? I have the double album they recorded on this tour and it is absolutely brilliant. Would so love to see a concert dvd of this. Their version of La Fiesta is transcendent!
Apparently if you snap one of the longer piano strings, the amount of tension mixed with the metal of the string could easily take an arm off.. i must admit finding the start frightening to watch.. brilliant video
Piano is a COMPLETE instrument. And if you want to PLAY MUSIC in any kind of way that the SOUND be better... you can do it. Open your minds to a new reality. Broke your paradigmas.
you are very idealist, because this is new, doesnt mean is better, or good, i think, there are a lot of classical instrument for make really exactly the same sound, and song, i think the piano is not for that sound, (maybe guitar or drums) for make a new music and broke thats paradigmas(by Kant) they forgeted the really sound and use of the piano.(haha), y bien ahora que me respondes al respecto, pues este comentario es solo para hacerte la contra, spitze und auf widersehen. bitte.voce, y mdreia
I saw Chick Corea doing that live twice, and it was simply AMAZING. Every time I see him doing it I marvel at his genius. I would love to see him with Herbie Hancock.

Piano is not supposed to be played that way, a fine percussionist can play it better using the same piano. Corea & Hancock are the two of this century's greatest pianists. In this video obviously they are experimenting with the piano which i think goes wrong.
They are suppose to play the piano as pianists NOT as percussionists.
@orangefunk keleketek obviously has not heard Chick play drums. Yeah. He IS a percussionist in every meaning of the word. For that matter, Piano is technically a percussion instrument.
Bach and Beethoven are rolling in their graves with Chick beating on the piano and plucking strings like that. Just kidding. I am sure they would have dug this stuff. Guitarist can make the same sounds also.
Around late 80s (or early 90s) I saw this duo in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The performance in this video is the same of that, like "escola de samba" of Rio de Janeiro during carnival.
Personally not a big fan of piano string plucking, it doesnt even sound like anything... It does sound pretty cool when they play the keys while dampening the strings manually however.
And he pick 'em, right on the stage, and fling them into the front row, when he didn't just press one nostril and shoot the sucker out the other onto the front row.
Love this avant got-a-clue vibe.. I saw these guys.. Boston Symphony Hall, around this time.. Best concert ever, besides Keith Jarrett with Jan Garbarek..
I love it when Chick reaches inside and messes with the strings... I saw him play in March 2006 in Oklahoma and he did this at one point during a duet with kalimba. I was ecstatic. He does this in a very avant-garde, even Cage-ian manner on some of his late 60s/early 70s recordings (my favorite being his appearance on Marion Brown's Afternoon of a Georgia Faun), but also in a much more rhythmic way on later pieces like "The Hilltop" from My Spanish Heart. This is closer to the latter
Saw the show in Denver "78. I thought the old dude in front of me was passing out...nope, just leaning forward to pull out his horn... & join in. IT WAS DIZ!!! I damn near passed out!
I remember seeing them when they did this tour. They played some totally unexpected jams like this as well as some awesome jazz tunes. Thanks for bringing back memories.

Incredible. Shows how much command they have over the entire piano, not just the keyboard. Not to mention the on-point and fun rhythm.

by the way, Chick Corea is also a percussionist, and can play drums, percussion, and vibraphones well.
