Densmore talks about the meltdown in his book, Riders on the Storm. Everyone knew Morrison seemed down before the performance, and noticed his lackluster peformance during the song. On the last verse Morrison weirded out and walked into a prop; a fence made of rope, fell and got all tangled. The band never asked Morrison what the hell happened, and Morrison never said, so take your pick. My take is that Morrison had severe mental issues compounded by his drug and booze problems.
@mnpd007 Yes, that was my initial impression in 1967 when I saw the debut on TV of this performance. I thought he (Jim Morrison) had gone crazy in front of the cameras. The idea of it being fueled by drugs and/or booze didn't occur to my 14 year old mind.
Sorry I've been in deep space for 2 Light years. My Fire is back on for all the Lizard Kings and Queens, princes and poppers. All backlogged comments finally posted. The Lizard Pawn is back!
In the book by Greg Shaw "The Doors On The Road", this was a rope prop that Jim had inadvertently had caught himself in..he was pissed off at the fact of being on live TV trying to untangle himself and towards the end of the clip they fade in due to his tirade of cussing..
Jim was a creative genius - he never gave a boring performance! The wires on stage were probably stage props and Jim used them very creatively, God Bless him :-)

That movement stuff has made me feel sick. I love Jim but do I have to feel like he did, as well as hear him and then puke to make it an all round tribute!
I think now, that it was a special effect of it's time... it blew my mind when I saw it when it first aired... but, yeah, compared to what they do now, it's almost mellow as you say...,
this is a rare one, don't see it make the rounds like Hollywood Bowl and other performances, dig Jimbos upsurge on the last chorus lol the American Poet baby
That wasn't electrical wires, I am pretty sure that was some kind of effect for the show. It's obviously staged, unless the the electricians on the show were mentally retarded.
My Goodness Gracious everyone run down to the local Liquor Store on Sunset Strip or anywhere in the United States and the rest of the World...Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Ma.
Morrison always sang the songs differently with each performance. He went with the flow of his emotions or feeling at the time. He was happy because of how free he allowed himself to be. He never tolerated the trappings of a conformist society which he felt destroyed the creative spirit within us all.
i think morrison was on no telling what kind of drugs probably the majority of the time, i hope not the majority of the time, but surely a good deal of time,.it's obvious that shit caught up to him, and i believe those drugs in combination of alcohol is what did him in, i suppose the other band members didn't do the shit that he did, or not as intensely and hard, and often,..he's an inspiration to me, but not the drugs, alchohol, etc. - he passed the torch to bono of u2, they being without drugs
It's funny to look at Ray and see his G101 organ but the overdubbed music is the Vox Connie organ. I dunno I guess it's funny because I play keys.... :D lol
lol-risethelightning- you are so right! he was not a poser, who the fuck did he copy? please tell me tobaccoandboys? beause jim and the doors were about as unique as it got back in those days, he was a magician a master of performance, that was part of the deal.Dramaic effect......is what theater is about..........duh.....lol:)
Fact: Morrison was so far ahead of the times then that I wonder if we have even touched the surface now of where he was at then His readings from Rimbaud and Nietzhie are what influenced him in a Negative way and ultimately destroyed him along with the fact he a Practicing alcoholic , ILL never get over him ever it was a total waste him dying the way he did
@shadowbeliefisme, have u actually read Artur Rimbaud or Nietzhie? Both are very inspiring if u are a phylosophy or poetry loving person. Lets not blame the inspiration for our own weaknesses and choices. We Do make our choices on our own, it is entirely our responsibility how we interprete what we read or hear and how we digest and use it.
@shadowbeliefisme a waste would have been Morrison working a typical 9-5 white collar job like what many people assumed he would. Morrison did what he wanted to and he paid the price for it, but he left some great music and poetry for us all to ponder and enjoy. I think he did pretty damn well for himself considering he died at only 27.
I would have to disagree and say that people like Rimbaud and Nietzche did not influence him a negative way but shaped him to be the person that he was. He was way ahead of his time because he took those influences and used them to shape his own views and his own self.
Morrison was a big poser. He did many things for dramatic effect. I still love his music, but there was that other side of him that was not so appealing.
you think he gives a shit what you think, he does what he wants, and thats the way to do things, the way you want them, he is not a poser, that term came out in the 80s how can he be a poser
@tobaccoandboys you crazy cocksucker! in fact Jim inded up hating fame! people looked at him as more of a rock star then a poet and he didnt like that! you must be one of those fuckers who watches oliver stones piece of shit movie "The Doors" and says stupid shit against Jim, well... that movie IS VERY UNTRUE! and oliver stone sucks cock! reznorfan15 2 years ago 2
Maybe Jim was tired of hassles over the lyrics.
Notice how he tones down the vocal (at 2:23) right after "girl, we couldn't get much higher".
Only weeks before, a really big show's producers told Morrison to write a new lyric for that line, and he refused.
Maybe he was sick of doing the song by late '67, unable to hide his indifference.
Yet in 1968 he threatened to smash a Buick with a sledgehammer on a TV show if a commercial using the song aired... "Come on, Buick, light my fire"
usedMTVpromos 2 years ago
Actually he didn't refuse. He agreed with them and then used the line anyway
TonyDetelder 2 years ago
You got the Sullivan story wrong -- he "agreed" to the producer's demand then sang it his way anyways.
