The host is Ralph Emery, a legend in Nashville. Leo Kottke mentioned Reid Whitelaw but mistakenly credited him with "Yummy Yummy", a record by the Ohio Express. Reid actually wrote "Goody Goody Gumdrops" for the 1910 Fruitgum Company; same time period and some of the same people involved.
Supreme artistry and a wonderful sense of humour - you can't beat that! By the way, didn't Julie London (or someone similar in style) once do an incredibly sexy version of 'Yummy...'?
One of the most brilliant guitarists of all time interviewed by one of the most inept radio and tv interviewers of all time. Ralph was dumber than a box of rocks, and probably never heard of Leo until that day.
I watched this show faithfully in the late 80s. Ralph Emery featured many great musicians including Mark O'Connor, New Grass Revival, Les Paul, Tony Trischka, Edgar Meyer, among others. Too bad he was replaced by those bimbos Crook & Chase.
That "awful host" is Ralph Emery, an authority on country music. He hosted "Nashville Now " in the 80's & had a variety show "Pop Goes the Country" back in the 70's, the same time Jimmy Dean had his TV show. So he's responsible for some country singers getting 'discovered' & starting in country music. They both helped stars like Barbara Fairchild, Donna Fargo, Becky Hobbs & others get started. He began his career as a DJ in Nashville. But I do agree he isn't the liveliest fellow in the world.
Normally I don't like American chat show hosts and interviewers because they're too upbeat, overbearing and condescending - the attention is always focussed on them more than the person they're interviewing. Particularly that prat Craig Ferguson, he didn't ever make anything of himself in Scotland for a reason. I don't like this guy for the opposite reason though - he's fucking comatose!
@foxyfaefife: No one gives a damn what you think of American chat shows. And certainly no one gives a damn what you think of Craig fucking Ferguson. What the hell does any of that have to do with Leo Kottke? Do you realize you are having a conversation with yourself? You are literally talking to yourself with a keyboard.
As for Ralph Emory, he had a great show that showcased great musicians. He didn't loose one fucking minutes sleep worrying what pesky, nitpicking Europeans thought of him.
I love Leo's eyebrows, just how he's so expressive. And yeah, his humor is going right over the host's head... not the first (or last) time that's happened to Leo! Most people just don't pick up on it, but damn is he funny.
goes to show you the diferance between some of todays Host, then they talked about the music and what it ment etc, today its all garbage with everything in the interveiw but about the muswic. theres your sign!
looking at the comments about how awful the host is. but what about this - can you imagine anywhere on the dial these days where you can have a real conversation about music like they're having?
I've never seen this show before, but it looks like a show where the host is sincere and cares about music and musicians. I say that's cool.
You're right, today's TV is all about "name" hosts, their ratings and inter-network rivalry, there are no mainstream channels that are interested in musicians talking about their trade.
Ralph Emery was the "subject" of the Gram Parsons/Roger McGuinn/Byrds song, "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man" (it can be found on U Tube). Joan Baez butchered it at Woodstock.
Some people asked who the interviewer is. That's Ralph Emery, an old warhorse country-music talk-show host who hosted Nashville Now for many yrs. I think this interview might actually be from Nashville Now.
A lot of folks in Nashville used to make fun of Emery for being so out of touch and making inane comments. He was sort of the Gene Shalit of country-music talk-shows.
All that discussion of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" aka "Wimoweh" and nobody gives props to the most ripped-off songwriter of all time, Solomon Linda, who wrote the song as "Mbube." (see wikipedia)
Who is this "interviewer"? He barely has a pulse.Leo's on a different frequency, God bless him. Oh, and I believe the spelling is "paradigm".(no need for embarrassment)
Is it just me or does most of what Leo says go straight over the interviewers head you just know he's not particularly serious about most of what he says.
I love to hear Leo play slide on the 12 string....

Ralph never heard of Yummy Yummy? I mean, a 60-year-old born in 1980 is a sad state of affairs. Unless it's 2040, which it won't be for a while.

It was NOT written as a compliment.
