So wait, what was he doing? He just went up really high and eventually fell back down? Don't get me wrong this is spectacular, but I'd like to have seen him actually try to orbit, if he had enough fuel to do so anyway.
@jedihunter176 There is a HUGE difference between orbital and sub-orbital flight. You don't have a suborbital machine and just wave your hand and decide to go orbital. I would also like to be able to say he "just went up really high and fell back down," but I don't have the means to go to 328,400 feet myself. That's like calling the Wright Brothers' flight "stupid" because they didn't go anywhere.
This has nothing to do with a vision at all, just marketing.
It will NEVER work, he's only collecting BIG money ! 100 idiots payed 200.000 dollars for their "space ticket" ( what a laugh!), this is 20.000.000 $ in his pocket minus investment..
@atomikus37 Haha, you do know we have lunar orbiters that take surface images of the moon right? we have mapped the dark side of the moon and there is fuck all there. If you download the program celestia, you can see a 3d model of the solar system using current surface maps of a variety of planets.

Note how unstable this thing is. I suppose it is to be expected. A super sonic vehicle controlled only by wires. Nothing like this has been scene since the bell X-1.
I know it looks unstable from first sight. Trust me, if you had some understanding about aerodynamics, atmospheric properties, and rocket design, you quikly realize why theres nothing dangerous about the design.
The SS1 and SS2 are computer controlled. Meaning that sensors pre read atmospheric properties from top to bottom and set a autopilot according to that from the moment it starts falling back to earth.
It has a special wing design to realize this back to ground flight scenario.
@Armigo91 It's not the return trip that worries me, it's the way it behaves during powered flight. It's not the most stable aircraft in the world, and it's obvious. I don't think it would take too much of a deviation from the normal flight profile to end up in a powered spin.
the plane may travel at supersonic speeds. At the altitude where it does go supersonic its speed decreases by the atmosphere before the SS reaches air densities at which those speeds are getting unstable to the plane.
The SS top speed is mach 3.5.It reaches this speed at 60km altitude. up to 100+ km altitude at which point it has deaccelerated and starts falling to the ground.
Then it falls to the erath at mach 3 where it can optionally glide a hundred miles around just for deecelarating the ss

@jedihunter176 This ship didn't have enough power to achieve orbital velocity. And as far as I have heard won't.

@krogen42hull198 I never said it was stupid. In fact, it's pretty cool.

People as Branson should stop selling NOTHING and know his limits. A SUBorbital flight is not an ORBITAL flight, therefor you need the NASA !

I wonder who make the non-government, non-billionaire suborbital or orbital spacecraft?
GreatInca 2 years ago
his name is Burt Rutan! and he is god of all things experimental and flight. he rocks!!!!!!
all of this is his brainchild, others may have invested to help him realize his dream, but he is THE MAN!!!
