It's actually a huge undertaking to take a bear. Fleshing the hide properly to market standards takes hours of careful labour. Butchering the meat requires prompt and skillful attention. No one I know takes harvesting a bear lightly. Precious resource, a lot of work.

I've been a hunter my whole life and do not think trapping is sporting as for hunting bears over bait i think that is good just as long as you do it so that you are picking the bear out (making sure it has no cubs,it is old,ect.) not just using it to shoot any bear. hunting is the only way we have to manage some animals unless you want to reintroduce predators people just need to be more ethical
if its to small of a bear you just let it go dickhead...in trapping us trappers must be very selctive to get the best prime thick furs to make any money tapping. if its to small you just let it go and wait till its bigger to catch it again. trapping can be way most selective than hunting most times. especially with the fur markets like they are right now.

Not impossible, but very difficult. They do allow dogs on cats in Montana, and I am dead against it.
The big word now is "HARVEST"......whereas I am a hunter. Harvest is a word used in farming, not hunting...but since montana has it's share morons that will not hunt, the state encourages the word "HARVEST" so car hunters can can "feel good" about shooting an elk stuck in 3ft of snow without leaving the sight of their truck.
We just need to remember what traditional hunting is all about......

I agree with Ajkecki123, I you are going to go out and get all pissed off because people are hunting and trapping animals that have had a fair life and not been pumped full of chemicals then you had better be a 100% veagen because all of the animals that you eat probably didn't have as good a life as these bears, and were probably killed in a less humaine way than these animals. I hunt and trap. For all of those people wondering why the bear didnt die instantly...I have never seen a bear die instantly under any circumstances...lets see you get about 2 feet away from a 400lb animal that wants eat you, and place a bullet right between the ears. Hunting and trapping takes skill, and patience. so for everyone who feels like bad mouthing this video can go home to thier hormone fed, salmonella, pus-filled, chicken from the grocery store. I've been a hunter my whole life and do not think trapping is sporting as for hunting bears over bait i think that is good just as long as you do it so that you are picking the bear out (making sure it has no cubs,it is old,ect.) not just using it to shoot any bear. hunting is the only way we have to manage some animals unless you want to reintroduce predators people just need to be more ethical

if its to small of a bear you just let it go dickhead...in trapping us trappers must be very selctive to get the best prime thick furs to make any money tapping. if its to small you just let it go and wait till its bigger to catch it again. trapping can be way most selective than hunting most times. especially with the fur markets like they are right now.

This video was filmed in Georgia and was put out as propaganda during an effort by the HSUS to ban bear baiting, trapping, and running by hounds. These morons bit off more than they could chew, as they defined "bait" as including natural bait too. Blackberries, apples, mushrooms, blueberries, ect. I've been hunting, trapping and fishing these woods for 23 years and aven't ever seen a bear. These methods are about our only means to reduce the population. And yes, they are good eating!!

all over the place (both 145lbs tops). i have no problem with using hounds or traps but this video did strike me as a little messed up mostly because i see traps as a means to catch vermin or fur animals and i see bear as a game animal and see little market use for the fur other than rugs...only the hunter should have the rug. my x girls dad has killed a few bear but idk how and he did some huntin up your way for cats and was on the cover of sports illustrated with 1 a long time ago

and my cousin got #3 all around largest in the state and a possible world record was killed behind my house on a hunting club but it wasnt officially weighed in...he just didnt want it in the same woods as his deer hounds. i generally still hunt but plan on going bear hunting with hounds...still hunting for them has been unsuccesful for me for the past 3 years! i also helped train a coon dog last weekend...hes gunna be a big mean SOB on the tree...you shoulda seen the older bitch pull my buddies

i dont do this, i live in NC and baiting or trappiong is illegal but using dogs isn't. a spot and stalk is damn near impossible especially here in the swampy areas, its just too thick so unless you use dogs or just know a common trail (rare) people use some form of bait (cant use processed foods legally). people use pistols for bear hunting with dogs but we're talkin 44 mag, 357. mag...
my question to you guys is this, whats the difference between this and any other trapping(coyote, fox, etc.)?

Not impossible, but very difficult. They do allow dogs on cats in Montana, and I am dead against it.
The big word now is "HARVEST"......whereas I am a hunter. Harvest is a word used in farming, not hunting...but since montana has it's share morons that will not hunt, the state encourages the word "HARVEST" so car hunters can can "feel good" about shooting an elk stuck in 3ft of snow without leaving the sight of their truck.
We just need to remember what traditional hunting is all about......

i completely understand where your coming from but different terrain means different techniques...i can damn near garuntee you that you wouldnt kill a bear all season with a spot and stalk or still hunting technique in my county...maybe in the mountains but not here. i guess in the only east side top 3 bear counties in NC you could sit on a bucket and pop 1 with a slug from a few yards but thats on the other side of the sound from me...my buddy killed the largest youth bear in NC (its #2 now)

Perhaps I didn't present my point of view well. My point here is that the "Way we play the game" is more important than winning.
Bears are hard to find but they still harvest several thousand w/o dogs or bait.
My position is this, if you can't take the animal "fair chase"....then so be it, animal wins. I do not like tree stands wither.......these animals have nothing to fear from the trees, and therefore no not look for enemy's there.
But...I am happy to just get out and walk, no kill necessary.
