This was a necessary leela that took place because it was to fulfill the task of Mohini (Vishnu) and Shiva to mingle their "energies" together & make the baby Lord Ayyappan (also known as "Hariharputran" <--son of Vishnu & Shiva). Ayyappan had to kill a demonness (Mahishasura's sister). She got a vardaan from Brahma that she could only die at the hands of a child born of Vishnu and Shiva. As both Gods are males, the demonness thought that she was technically immortal ...You can't dupe the Gods!
