this was my favorite version of the movie, I loved Elizabeth taylors portrail as well but the music in this one was so epic and dramatic. I must have watched this movie over 50 times.

hi. I have a question. is there a difference in the running time of the VHS version of "Cleopatra" (1999) and the DVD version? Because the VHS runs 139 minutes, whereas I read that the running time on the DVD is 177 minutes. is that really so, and if so, can you please tell me what's the difference between the VHS and DVD?
There are a few scenes/lines in the trailer that are not included on the VHS version of the film.
To be quite honest i don't care if she was Chinese, I don't know why people love to beg race with people. You had more then 1 Cleopatra in Egypt and most of them were a mixture of Greek and Black Egyptian. Good movie and excellent soundtrack. Thanks for sharing it with youtube! Better than the 60s film and the interpretation on Rome that was awful. I don't think she wasn't as beautiful as Varela, but Varela did a great job with the role IMHO. For a TV movie, I was pretty amazed how watchable it was. I'd say the only thing better in another version was possibly Rex Harrison as Caesar, lol.

I readily admit half-way (well, 20% anyway...lol) falling in love with both the character *&* the actress herself because of her magnificent job in this role. She merited at least an Emmy nomination, but, alas, was ignored by the Academy. She's simply breathtaking!!

hi. I have a question. is there a difference in the running time of the VHS version of "Cleopatra" (1999) and the DVD version? Because the VHS runs 139 minutes, whereas I read that the running time on the DVD is 177 minutes. is that really so, and if so, can you please tell me what's the difference between the VHS and DVD?
There are a few scenes/lines in the trailer that are not included on the VHS version of the film.

It always amazes me how the people who are always the most convinced that all the rulers of ancient Egypt were white (even before the Persian and Greek invasions). Are always descendants of western Europeans whose ancestors had part in the history of that part of the world. I guess when you come from people who had no major civilizations until a couple hundred years ago. You try to cling to something older and more respected. She could of been mixed with either arab or black or both. But she definitely had very little Greek DNA left in her bloodline. It's just like rich plantation owning families from the Caribbean of course their ancestors where white but by the 4th and 5th generations. Most of the family are light skin blacks.

Afterall that was Alexander's dream: the Greek and the eastern civilization to mix and create a new hellenized one. Ptolemaids are products of Alexander's conquest: they had their greek ethnic backgrownd and education but they had also knowledge and respect for Egypt as older civization and they tried to do their best as Egyptian rulers.

You had more then 1 Cleopatra in Egypt and most of them were a mixture of Greek and Black Egyptian. That last Cleopatra is the one everyone is talking about she comes out of the Greek line, one of Alexander the Greats generals got Egypt after Alexander died and he named himself Pharaoh of Egypt. this was the best cleopatra movie, and to every1 her farther was greek and her mother was thought to be an african princess, so shes mix. Jolie is going to be the new cleo, so do not agree with that.

Good movie and excellent soundtrack. Thanks for sharing it with youtube! Better than the 60s film and the interpretation on Rome that was awful. I don't think she wasn't as beautiful as Varela, but Varela did a great job with the role IMHO. For a TV movie, I was pretty amazed how watchable it was. I'd say the only thing better in another version was possibly Rex Harrison as Caesar, lol.

@pablorod74 Leonor Varela, especially in this role (an early, superbly-cast one!), so young & vital, is one of THE most exquisitely BEAUTIFUL women in the world! I readily admit half-way (well, 20% anyway...lol) falling in love with both the character *&* the actress herself because of her magnificent job in this role. She merited at least an Emmy nomination, but, alas, was ignored by the Academy. She's simply breathtaking!!

She's beautiful, but Elizabeth Taylor was also beautiful. They both just have different kinds of beauty, I'd say. Also, Elizabeth Taylor gave such a strong, convincing, and dignified performance that no other woman can pull off the role of Cleopatra as well.

@Eagle0watch Hi. It's probably better that race itself not even be a criteria for picking out the best actors, don't you think? That would really be a strait jacket for producers. I do see your point to some degree, but I hope it wouldn't become a racial thing where race decided what roles an actor could or couldn't play. You probably don't believe that either.

@Gaul1748 I agree with what your saying to a degree also.But have you notice that movies are starting to become a little predictable because they're always using the same recipe for ever movie plot?(THE WHITE GUY HAS TO ALWAYS COME SAVE THE DAY) wich theres nothing wrong that but it gets kinda of boring and predictable sometimes.And BTW I,m kool with every race nothing against white people.

@vspink714 I agree with you 100% The only problem i got is that Main-stream America tries to change the history books a distorts them and movies like these don;t really help. Believe or not millions of people really believe cleopatra is white! lol . Also millions believe Jesus is White(thanks to all of the Blond blue eyes paintings). I bet in the future they'll even turn Michael Jackson white.

@Eagle0watch there are loads of things mainstream media distorts i just think its up to the viewer to distinguish reality from a movie. when addressing cleopatra vii the more important issue than how her race is portrayed in my opinion is her character. movies show her as nothing more than a seductress but she was a brilliant pharaoh and a ridiculously witty and intelligent strong woman. race shouldn't matter about any historical figure, but what they've accomplished
