Nitrous oxide when injected into a gasoline engine does 2 things. 1. It rapidly converts from liquid to gas causing a cooling effect. That cooling effect make the intake air more dense, more air means you can add more gas. The Nitrous Oxide also splits into Oxygen and Nitrogen adding more fuel to the fire. You have to have a balance between the Nitrous and gasoline, if there is a sudden drop in gasoline rate the nitrous rather oxygen and nitrogen will explode in the cylinders.
@duflar one of the cons is that because it rapidly cools down the engine and then reheats the engine... it causes stress on the metal making it more prone to bending and cracking. this will ultimately lead to engine failure as you can see here !!!
@axle11201 or someone has used nitrous before and knows what can happen from personal experience. and also its a good idea to know what and how it happens if your going to use something...
It is also used as an oxidizer in rocketry and in motor racing to increase the power output of engines. At elevated temperatures, nitrous oxide is a powerful oxidizer similar to molecular oxygen.
Nitrous oxide gives rise to NO (nitric oxide) on reaction with oxygen atoms, and this NO in turn reacts with ozone. As a result, it is the main naturally occurring regulator of stratospheric ozone.....Wikipedia.
My info on the welding came from Drag racing commentator, he may have been wrong.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas or sweet air,[1] is a chemical compound with the formula N2O. It is an oxide of nitrogen. At room temperature, it is a colorless non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet odor and taste. It is used in surgery and dentistry for its anesthetic and analgesic effects. It is known as "laughing gas" due to the euphoric effects of inhaling it, a property that has led to its recreational use as a dissociative anesthetic.
Nitrous oxide is a compression explosive used in underwater deep sea welding. it's like deisel, it combusts with compression. on it's own, it's not flammable.
Ha... gotta luv some of the fantastic NOs descriptions, remember kids google is your friend and while ya on You tube how about checking out some of the how nitrous works tutourials.lol.
N2O, turbocharging, and supercharging all work to accomplish the same thing - stuff more air (~30% O and ~70% N2) into the combustion chamber. The advantage of that is with more air, you can also add more fuel, without over-richening, which makes more power. Specifically using N2O is a chemical means to that end.
You know when people get heart surgery and the body rejects the heart, this is what's happened here. The VL is not accepting the V8 and is doing everything it can to tell the brain (Owner) that it needs an RB30
@TheMadkent No sir, im not australian because i choose not to be Gay like Most of your population.
Now, you saying its funny that a car needs an rb30 because its the cars fault is stupid. Not a joke at all and just proves how bad a sense of humor you have.
And Just because it's Australian doesn't mean it's some spaceship. Its still a car. Its running a v8. You pussy ass australians get mad over anything. Same with the GTO crap and the G8 and the ls engines. you guys are worse than brits
@bmxman242 - U buried yourself with your last comment mate - ignorant, stupid and generalising an entire country all at once, do you even know where England or Australia is on a map? So to reiterate YOU ARE A FUCKWIT
80% of the atmosphere is nitrogen while N2O is only 66% nitrogen. Like RsRocket31 said, its like adding more oxygen to the engine. AND its super cold making it really dense. The ultimate cold-air intake :P
@frontenginedragsterd If you throw a bottle of 02 into a fire, as it heats up the oxygen will expand and build up pressure untill the relief valve opens or the bottle cracks if no valve fitted.Same with N20, leave the bottle warmer on too long and all the gas comes out the relief valve [no explosion] I think it's about 1150-1200psi, I've seen this happn on a v8 kingswood I was dynoing whilst working at C & V Performance.
@frontenginedragsterd oxygen flamable???????????? don't light a match the world will blow up? You need oxygen to feed a flamable/combustable fuel but you have no chance of oxygen catching alight or exploding!!!
nope, but it makes fuel burn hotter and with more power than it usually would, so when something goes wrong nitrous will makes things worse. What should of been a normal backfire turns into a much bigger bang.
@Alpin3SS Nitrous oxide is an accelerant ( so is oxygen)it is not flammable on its own, but once it is introduced to flame it accelerates the burning rate.
@makattak88 how can it be an accelerant but not flammable on its own? MRBLOWN572 is correct, the nitrogen cools the fuel, which in turn makes the fuel molecules smaller so you can pump more in AND adds oxygen. nitrous is the best
@conin76 its just an oxidizer that basically lets it burn more violently and hotter its basically like pumping oxygen in with the fuel but nos is cheaper to put into tanks then oxygen
@conin76 it increases the volumetric efficiency by increasing the density of the fuel through the cooling effect of the nitrogen and adding oxygen as an oxidiser to allow the fuel to burn more violently
Happens more than you think. Usually they take the transporter/trailer and all, and most of the parts are untraceable and worth quite a bit, even second hand. If I caught someone doing it... lets just say they wouldn't be seen again either.
@blownhemi how the fuck does somebody steal a drag car and its messed up b/c you not only have the money you put in to it but you also have all the work you did on it
Nitrous oxide is NOT flamable , it is 2 parts nitrogen 1 part oxygen (N20). It is used to add cold air to an engine so you can burn more fuel. It is basically cold air.
@MrBLOWN572 Yes nitros does cool and condense the air but the power comes from the extra oxegen aideing in combustion and lessoning air intake for the same hp often adding 30 to 50 percent more, up to ive" heard"150 percent.500 hp motor =600 to 750hp with spray
Because you wouldn't be able to control it. There's no way you would feed enough fuel for pure oxygen, might as well hold a blow torch on your pistons.
Nitrous oxide has a slightly higher concentration of oxygen than the normal atmosphere, which allows you to burn more fuel and therefore make more power.
it is used more like forced induction as n2o has more oxygen parts than air, therefore it is putting more oxygen mixture in the engine than normal air could
@RsRocket31 Nitrous Oxide is nitrogen gas with an oxygen molecule/s attatched. When heated to a high enough temperature, the oxygen atom unattatches from the nitrogen and reacts with the rest of the combustion. At the same time it cools the intake ports, allowing a more denser oxygen concentration
@willymywonka Gee, you sound really smart for an 8 year old.i've built more nitrous engines than you.ve had nappy changes.Maybe you should give everyone on here your scientific explanation on how nitrous works, and teach me how to tune it because obviously I need it as having one launch backfire in 20years of building race engines.Look forward to recieving your knowledge.
@MrBLOWN572 all i was saying was that your comment inferred that nitrous only cooled down the air. No need to get all butt hurt about it like you've got something to prove
@MrBLOWN572 The nitrogen does cool down the incoming air, making it more dense, but it allows the extra oxygen molecules to be burned. lol smart for an 8 year old? real mature guy
@MrBLOWN572 I could be wroing but what I always thought it did was under those pressures the nitrogen split into N+N+O. The extra Oxygen lets more fuel be used thus more power and the Nitrogen keeps the engine cool
@MrBLOWN572 Other way around , N20 means one part nitrogen , 2 parts oxygen. And no its not used to cool an engine. It will lean an engine out and cause it to run hotter in a dry system. Not cold air. And yes , it is very flamable
@ravinex You're right it's not used to cool the charge, but you are wrong on the flammability. Nitrous oxide by itself is 100% NON-FLAMMABLE! In a wet system it is mixed with fuel to help atomization which obviously makes it a combustible agent from the fuel solenoid on, but if not mixed, it does not have a flash point. When introduced to a fueled ignition source, it will intensify it by way of its heavy oxygen levels, though.
@chocolademan5ET I'm guessing the engine didn't get enough fuel to offset the extra O2 from the nitrous, run too lean and fuel is a bit too explosive.
