Nitrous oxide when injected into a gasoline engine does 2 things. 1. It rapidly converts from liquid to gas causing a cooling effect. That cooling effect make the intake air more dense, more air means you can add more gas. The Nitrous Oxide also splits into Oxygen and Nitrogen adding more fuel to the fire. You have to have a balance between the Nitrous and gasoline, if there is a sudden drop in gasoline rate the nitrous rather oxygen and nitrogen will explode in the cylinders.

@duflar one of the cons is that because it rapidly cools down the engine and then reheats the engine... it causes stress on the metal making it more prone to bending and cracking. this will ultimately lead to engine failure as you can see here !!!

I'll try my hand at an explaination.

N2O, turbocharging, and supercharging all work to accomplish the same thing - stuff more air (~30% O and ~70% N2) into the combustion chamber. The advantage of that is with more air, you can also add more fuel, without over-richening, which makes more power. Specifically using N2O is a chemical means to that end.

@frontenginedragsterd If you throw a bottle of 02 into a fire, as it heats up the oxygen will expand and build up pressure untill the relief valve opens or the bottle cracks if no valve fitted.Same with N20, leave the bottle warmer on too long and all the gas comes out the relief valve [no explosion] I think it's about 1150-1200psi, I've seen this happn on a v8 kingswood I was dynoing whilst working at C & V Performance.

Nitrous oxide is NOT flamable , it is 2 parts nitrogen 1 part oxygen (N20). It is used to add cold air to an engine so you can burn more fuel. It is basically cold air.

Because you wouldn't be able to control it. There's no way you would feed enough fuel for pure oxygen, might as well hold a blow torch on your pistons.

Nitrous oxide has a slightly higher concentration of oxygen than the normal atmosphere, which allows you to burn more fuel and therefore make more power.

@ravinex You're right it's not used to cool the charge, but you are wrong on the flammability. Nitrous oxide by itself is 100% NON-FLAMMABLE! In a wet system it is mixed with fuel to help atomization which obviously makes it a combustible agent from the fuel solenoid on, but if not mixed, it does not have a flash point. When introduced to a fueled ignition source, it will intensify it by way of its heavy oxygen levels, though.
