  • HI

  • I saw Rick Derringer in a guest appearance 1973-74 with Johnny Winter, and the late Randy Jo Hobbs and Richard Hughes on drums. Rick was a guest star and Ronnie Montrose was also a guest star. One of the greatest live shows I ever saw. It was the "Still Alive And Well" tour.

God Bless you Rick if you are reading this, you still have many fans and well wishers.

    Bill

  • "He was also from the wrong side of the tracks, and he never outgrew that." I know people like that. They got everything going for them, but they can't outgrow that thing.....that f'ing....it's like a chip on their shoulder or something.

Dunno what it is. But it can hold 'em back...no matter how "well" they're doing or CAN do, if it doesn't outright take 'em down...

    Shame. What a bass player...

  • I really loved the Johnnie Winter And period.

  • Rick thanks for sending Steve Freeman your DVD it was amazing ... You are amazing... May God Bless ... and some Drug F'd folks do-need help.. so look for the signs if they are given up to a disapproved mental state it is easy to see... don't give dogs Jehovahs food... Love you RIck. • Funny how people are so diffrent but in many ways go thru almost the same thing in lifes path.

    Fun to revew these interviews.

  • Rick Derringer and Johny Winter were phenonal guitar players.

  • Sounds like someone may need to catch a clue.

  • i lost 2 of my friends, bass man booze, lead singer lung cancer, i still drink but so fucking what, im 54 im slowing down been playing the axe for 40 years, right knee replaced left knee will be replaced in Oct 2010, i know everything guitar wise on this planet, when i was 12 in 1968 i never knew i could do it, guess again, never got famous, but people know me and thats good enough, still kicking GOD is the master of us all , he gives you your talent, NEXT!

  • great job LLM! These are very good interviews..the Chris Cross one was great!

thank you thank you thank you!

  • Heh, as we go thtough life we change...thank God for that...looks like Rick did OK and I saw all his interviews..worth a watch!

Rick thanks for the MUSIC...keep playing

  • I can't believe some of the comments

I'm reading on this board, with some

people saying drugs can inspire great

work. Are they out of their FUCKING

    MINDS?!? Are you even LISTENING

to what Derringer's saying? Use your

    damn heads, for Christ's sake.

  • Hey hey hey, without Drugs we wouldn't have had Pink Floyd, the 13th Floor Elevators, Alex Chilton or any of the Stones best work & the list goes on. Sure there is a dark side to drug use but Drugs do inspire & have inspired many, many artists over the years. don't be so hysterical and ignorant about the role of drugs to artistic endeavor.

  • @ex1le444 Gee, I never realized that.

So you're a famous artist, eh? Who are

you? How many records have you sold?

More than Derringer? I guess it was

drugs that gave you all that inspiration,

    right? Far out, man.

I just hope to God that the day you destroy

your stoned out body in a car wreck, you

don't take some innocent life with you.

    What an asshole.

  • i don't need to be famous to know that drugs influenced the work of many of my favorite artists.

Don't forget Rick himself admits to extensive drug use in his early days.

As for who the 'Asshole' is! Well I think anybody who reads our little exchange can make their own mind up about that.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that I use drugs, I certainly never said I did. are you slow or something? Caio.

  • Great artists may have used drugs, as Derriinger admits to drug use, but I don't see Derringer attributing his or anyone's greatness TO drugs, anymore than he does to heavy drinking or smoking. You've got correlation mixed up with causation, pal. So you've never used drugs, but you nonetheless make an argument in favor of them. I see. If that's the case, you don't NEED drugs, my friend. You're already pretty fucked up without them.
  • WTF is your problem?

I'm not making an argument one way or the other. I was simply stating a fact.

I never said I didn't use drugs or use drugs, that's none of you business. You obviously have some personal problems, but I still don't see how that gives you the right to post your pathetic diatribes here and call people you have never met names! Apart from being a complete fuckwit, you are obviously a Coward to Boot! Oh and I am most certainly not your Friend. Don't respond U R Blocked - Asshat.

  • @ex1le444 A FACT??? Perhaps in your warped mind, it's a fact. But nowhere else! I'm just pointing out what an ASSHOLE you are. If you had even half a brain, you would heed what he said at 1:00, when he says that they "couldn't continue on that path". I admire Derringer because he obviously has some sense, but he fully admits how hard it is for people to get away from that life. I have a problem? Yes, with fuckwits like you, who glorify drugs.

  • @Weasler455 I can't believe you don't thnk drugs have inspired great work. I mean the Beatles went from I Want To Hold Your Hand to The White Lp in just a few short years. I'm not tryng to argue/advocate drug use, but to ignore the impact they've had on music is refusing to believe facts.

  • @da324 You rant and then block me after you send stupid shit to my inbox. Good thing becase I woud have killed you with FACTS! The last resort of a man with nothing factual to say is to throw insults. You're a sorry excuse for a Christian.

  • yup, dope can fuck up your show but then again...so can gods! :)

  • Dig Rick... he's an amazing guitarist and he "used" to put on some great shows here in socal....but god damn did god fuck up his live show or what?

  • Seriously. Encouraging heroin-use as anything other than a means to a very lonely, ugly death, should be criminal in itself. I've heard the legends of musicians like Clapton getting their best work on smack. As a kid, I knew it didn't ring true. Then I grew up and got close to a different gen. of musicians, some of whom used, I'm certain, seeking that legendary glamour. There is NO WAY the ROCK STARS I've known have EVER benefitted from heroin use, musically or otherwise.

  • Miles Davis would disagree with you on this one. He said when he was high on heroin he couldn't even get out of fucking bed, let alone pick up his horn and play. In fact, when he was addicted to smack he actually quit playing for awhile (until he got clean). If you think getting high on heroin makes you a better artist, you are delusional.

  • Rick looks better than he has in 20+ years. I'd be thankin' God, too! The man has done as many, if not more, drugs than Randy Jo had time to do. When the hell did he find the Lord? Has he had another kid in the recent past?? ....

He's talkin' a bit of smack thus far--& this is the 1st clip I've seen, but who cares? He's frikkin' RICKY D and he can tell it anyway he wantsa! ahhhhh, Rick sang an ENTIRE concert to me on my 18th birthday in Detroit. Maybe we had eaten the same drugs??!! ha

  • Rcik Derrringer's parents and his psychohistory had far more causation in his ability to rationally govern his drug-use---and there are MANY people who use even hard drugs rationally and function, but they will never be on an HBO special---than some mystical, tyrannical father-Imago up in the sky, up wherever else.

ON HOBBES: He and others "can't function" because drugs are illegal, supply erratic, prices insane. Keith Richards wrote and played best on heroin, & did until police abused him.

  • Jonny Thunders played his best on Heroin as well. Check out his vids on YT especially the 1's near his death from Heroin he looked bad but he still rocked the guitar. (forJTerrible63)

  • heroin never helped Johnny Thunders, it only hinder ed him.

  • @JTerrible63 Yeah, right.

    Are you for real?

  • People usually turn to religion and then the real smart ones go beyond that to buddhism and searching for universal truth.

  • Buddhism is a Religion, just not a monolithic one like the Christ worshipers have.

  • If you didn't want to hear him talk about religeon , you shouldn't be watching this part of the interview. hey, if it works for him it works...good for him

  • Is this Living Legends series some sort of Christian group? Seems like every rock star preaches finding faith.

  • We just let the interviews go where they go. LLM has no agenda, just honest one on one chats . . . hope you are enjoying them. Thanks for the comment!

  • I love them actually. Keep em' coming.

  • LivingLegendsMusic:

That's exactly how it should be, let the interveiw go where it goes. It should be a story about the person's life, whatever they want to share. Thank you.

  • Sure thing "drummer78" - you might look into the dynamic involved here. Derringer could play with JW almost note for note, and he had a ferocious style on stage with him. Great talent.

  • @drummer78 Agree. Love Rick's stuff but hate this message of God shit.

  • When you no longer like what you see in the mirror, you either change or you die.

  • Young Forever !!!!

  • This was really interesting until the religious stuff started...too bad...a great player none the less.

  • why? you don't have to agree with his philosophy! are you going to write someone off because they have a different belief? oooooh, they believe in god! yikes! why are some people so scared of god? live and let live. he is who he is and has the right to live the life he wants and believe whatever he wants, like everyone else, so respect it. he is still the same talented musician. a gift from god. :o)

  • Because I was more interested in hearing about his Music history than his personal religious beliefs. No, I don't think I have to agree with his Philosophy. No, I haven't wriiten him off.. I'm Ok with God, he doesn't scare me. I agree he has thr right to live however he wants.I respect Rick as a player. I decide who I respect, not you. He got his skills from hard work, not God. Now you actually know how I feel about those points...you totally wasted your time and freaked out for no reason...

  • What's wrong with the "religious" stuff. He's just telling you about his life experiences, just like if he was telling you any other story about his life.

  • I never said anything was wrong with it actually, why assume that?

  • Randy Joes work with Johnny Winter is my favorite. And Live and Studio And Live.he played very interesting lines. And I miss the guy alot.

  • How come the lord saved Rick but let poor Randy Jo die?

In the end, religion doesn't explain anything except that some people don't have to guts to say, "I don't know."

  • Dear Rockstarretired, I hope you find the Lord. Then you will know.

  • What is pathetic is that you can't be happy for someone who hasn't thrown his life away completely. I assume you are either jealous because you were never really a "Rockstar" or you have a hate on for Christians - - which is a problem you should try to find a better place to deal with than on Youtube... where you won't get help.

  • The Lord can forgive you if you ask but will not undo the things you do to yourself. Nobody "let" Randy die, he did it to himself.

  • @RockstarRetired

Jeez dude, I'm gonna use that one...simple...true

  • Yeah right, the lord said stop...what the fuck were you smoking??????

  • Better to be a moron quietly rather than shout it from the roof tops, don't you think? Yeah. I thought so. Be quiet.

  • Well this is an interview on Rick not Randy Joe. They only allow a small amount of time with these segments, he said what he needed to say about what happened without going into long detail, he gave you the bottom line on it. That doesn't mean he didn't care, keep in mind when Randy Hobbs died Rick was still young and in his R&R frame of mind, I'm sure he did try to some extent, but back then we didn't have intervention like we do now. We change as we get older.Rick wasn't a heavy christian then

  • I met him once in Lafayette Louisiana after a gig and he wasn't very interested in talking to a fan....changed my opinion of him forever I am afraid. Great guitar player, I give him that.

  • Wow, that was a quick reply. Thanks.

  • Rick is 61 this year . . . he always had a baby face!

  • How old is he? he looks like 40. "But Hang on sloopy" was a hit in ´65, so he must be closer to 60.

  • Christian or not, you'd expect people to try to help their friends. Drug fucked folks ain't really open to going clean.

  • Spoken like a man.

  • Ya gotta love the guy....what a player. I still think he should write a book....lololol.

  • I think Rick should write a book. Everybody else does and he's got way more stories....lololol.
