The tail rotor actually broke when it slapped against the deck of the ship, thats why it spun. It lifted off because when the ship crested the wave the resulting force pushed the helicopter up, its hard to explain. Very good pilot though, you have to have experience to not panic in this situation.

my mates a navy pilot he says its the pitch from the swell when the helicopter lands and the waves go up it like a catapult lauches the copter and cause its under power looses control that why they hitch them down so fast... hope that helped

I'm pretty sure the pitching of the ship kinda tossed it up into the air, forward (toward the camera) and the pilot pulled it back to keep it from going into the wall, hitting it's tail on the deck, and taking out the tail rotor. Once that was lost, there was nothing to counter it's main rotor, so it spun.

Ya, it was just crappy luck that last strap got released right when the stern of the ship crested that wave. Just enough force to unbalance the heli. That pilot needs a medal, especially after losing a tail rotor like that.

1. No standardization for making sure deck crew is clear of the helicopter before takeoff., 2. Stupid takeoff procedure;T/R stops., 3. 5 additional deckhands tempt fate by placing their bodies (and heads) under the main rotor system of a damaged helicopter as the blades are still turning! Absolutely amazing. God must be fatigued by having to protect this many people in such a compressed amount of time. Tip: develop something resembling a safety program. It's a thought.
