So much egotistical judgmental bs about who's the biggest bestest band... Music isn't meant to be a sport or a pissing contest... This is a sexy little song that really brings the devil to life in the middle of an epic album...
I love how Perry Farrell sings the song, but the rythm section is lacking terribly - the thumping bass line and the whoo-whoo's are essential. Without them ,it just ain't sympathy for the devil.
Take a look at all the other covers of this song on youtube and you'd have to admit that this is the best cover, wouldn't you? I bet the Rolling Stones would agree.
The Jagger vs. Farrell issue isn't the point, the cover is good it's because Jane's Addiction has an excellent band, one of the best of their decade, and that's what it takes to keep up with the Rolling Stones, one of the greatest rock & roll outfits ever assembled - the real survivors.
@Kletterator "keep up with the Rolling stones" ? Dont think Janes addiction ever think think of "keeping up " with the likes of the stones or any other band for that matter, they stand apart and have no desire to conform to people's expectations, unlike another band i wont mention. Jane's seek to break the mould , not conform to it, thats the difference.
awesome version awesome band, they are doing a cover not trying to be the stones. totally different era yet both influential in lots of good music. i love em both fuck asses
@permaveg Perry was just trying to prove that they could take this song and make it much better than the original, which they obviously did. Better vocals, better music. I miss the old Jane's. Peace...........
Re "Jane's always disliked the stones" That's not true at all. This band has cited the Stones as a definite influence. Don't know what you're talking about here. Perry said he had gotten sick of Honky Tonk Women once, but what does that have to do with it? Wow. accuracy in reporting on the net, huh?
@MrLeagueOJustice In the oral biog book "Whores" Dave Navarro mentions this version and says of the Rolling Stones, " I hate the Rolling Stones. Always have ,Always will. I like what they've contributed to the industry, but i would never put on a Rolling Stones record", he goes on "We ended up singing "Sympathy for the devil" as a joke. I can't believe that one of my least favourite bands is on my first record".
@MrLeagueOJustice Something iv'e always admired Janes for is their dislike of the stones, the feeling is mutual. I have never felt a stones influence in Janes music thank god, to me Janes are "The greatest rock n roll band in the world" not that stagnant corporate institution called the Rolling stones. As hammer91568 said below, Janes were trying to show how better the song could have been, hardly a compliment to the stones i would say .
Now wait a minute, I read in an interview back in the 90's, PF ADMIRING the stones. It seems like its more of a Dave thing. And yes, as a fan of both bands, I wiil say this version IS superior!
@permaveg Yes, let all bands be half-assed and incompetent. The Stones are more entertaining than a million Janes Addiction concerts combined (Perry's just jealous because he'd have no act without Jagger).
@steveconn Ha ha , "the Stones are more entertaining than a million JAs concerts" , what an old fart you seem. Perry jealous of Jagger? You may not know how important Jane's were in the early 90s L.A. scene but you have an amusung sense of humour. And Richards is a very average guitarist , and thats being genorous.
@permaveg History will remember the Stones as one of the most successful and important bands in Rock. Jane's Addiction will garner no more than a footnote at best. That's life, chump. Deal with it.
@permaveg A band that was together for a few years in the 80's, broke up, did a brief reunion, releases the random album
Vs.
A band that's been together fifty years, created the template for modern rock, wrote numerous #1 hits, makes billions on world tours and influenced the look and sound of thousands of bands.
Yeah, that's a real toss-up in the history department, dude. You got me there (suppressed laughter).
@steveconn Your wrong about Jane's dates, they broke up in 91 and reformed a number of times since , going strong now with a great new LP. You seem to think because the rolling bones are an institution going on and on ad nauseum, and because they make big dosh that means something, it does'nt. They may have been important once but no more, they rest on their laurels. That fake Jagger happily excepts a knighthood from royalty, how lame is that.
@permaveg Don't worry, Perry would never be offered anything like that. He'd be lucky to win a free fries with 'scratch and win' at McDonald's. Immortal artist, immortal band [trying not to crack up].
@steveconn I would like to think Perry would refuse any awards from that crowd, lickarse Bono and Jagger may get down on their boney knees and bow down to the bitch and grovel but Perry doing it would dissapoint me ( not that he would ever get one anyway). Rock that has royal approval is sterile rock. Perry owns a chunk of the S.american rainforest and refuses offers from shits like Mc Donalds to exploit it, i admire him for that as well.
@permaveg The Stones raised more money for Katrina victims with sales their special bonus cd at Bigger Bang concerts than joke Perry will ever save of the rainforest.
And don't worry, no one will ever offer Perry any awards, so he won't have to turn them down. His talent doesn't merit any :)
@steveconn Jagger was only allowed to kiss the queens arse because of the revenue that band created, a buisness award in reality, the stones are an industry, a profit machine pretending to be rebellious that people want to buy into , with Jaggers dosh he could have fed and housed every survivor of the hurricane, jesus their fans are dumb and he is a shrewd buisnessman. JA and Perry have received many awards , why shout about it like Jagger though?
@permaveg Yeah, that asshole Jagger, being so successful and enjoying it! Why can't he keep it real and run a half-assed, fumbling operation like Jane's Addiction? After all that's everyone's childhood dream!
