I would say misinterpretation. I thnk the same happend with a lot of religions out there. Ancient people like that don't have the sophistication to understand something that can defy gravity, especially when they dont know what gravity is. If you see some1 do a magic trick, one might thnk that its some power they possess that lets them defy physics. when really its just an illusion.

I agree, the greys have mastered the technological aspects of our universe and have managed to create a mechanical version of the Merkaba field which they use to travel to our plane of existence, and they observe us because they have no concept of love and the light.
