it's not a vocoder that Steve Waller is using, it's a device that Jeff Beck used a lot as well, consists of an amplified speaker horn driver, simple as that but insetad of a high frequency horn it is connected to a plastic tube that goes up alongside the mic and into the player's mouth; the player then forms the "effects" using his own mouth shapes. Early versions were known to loosen the player's fillings! Steve even used this down the pub in his "off duty" band (and the shirt!). RIP big man.

This is a great song. It keeps showing up next to my video "Angel at my door" which is a view of an oil painting my band used for cover art. There is a really cool version of this song with a black guy singing, both versions are great but the vocals on that other one are cool.
