@MrAllen1947 1) It isn't animated; it's time-lapse. 2) The bright surface of the Moon shuts down the camera's iris so you can't see the stars at in the same exposure (they're there - it's real, dude). 3) It's time lapsed.

@xonnnix By "this side" you mean the side facing us, right? Partly it's because we (Earth) take the hit. Also the side facing us is younger (therefore fewer craters), likely because it's warmer - more heat producing elements - making it more "plastic." That's why about 30% of the Nearside (the one facing us) is that dark "maria" while only about 1% of the Farside is that stuff. And possibly another object hit the Moon, raining debris unequally on the Farside.

The real question is why can we see every inch of earth, very clearly, on Google earth but we can't see the moon clearly when there's no weather or any other obstructions. We've mapped every inch of it in HD yet we still are only " allowed " to view very limited areas that are OK'ed by "somebody". Is there something to hide?????
