People have this idea that english people speak really posh like that like macorah does n like luna off sailor moon, but most of us dont :L tbh i just speak like a normal person
They give characters accents to fit with the different kinds of honorifics used in Japan. Jonochi/Joey used rather rude ones so he became a New Yorker. Bakura used polite ones so he became british. Evil Bakura used ones emphesising himself so he also became british.
The reason the cards are edited is because if they were to actually translate all of the information on the card, it would look like the actual product. Here in the US, the TV stations FCC considers it to be a commercial rather than a children's TV show.
I think Bakura's British becaues in the original Japanese, he was very polite. And of course the British are stereotypically polite. Jounouchi talked like a tough guy, so Joey came from Brooklyn. More edits you didn't catch - there's quite a lot of physical fights in the original, but oh no, can't have that! They also removed a TON of religious symbolism (rocks instead of crosses, badly-drawn star instead of a hexagram). And don't get me started on the name changes!
So yeah. the two episodes one from season 1 and the other from season 2 were actually one in the manga. Something interesting. That can be something you can do. Reveal the editings from the manga to the show.
which he was given a penalty game that aged him to a wrinkly old man. Duke just wanted power. Duke and little yugi dueled for the puzzle. After yugi's victory, Duke's father broke the puzzle and yanked Yugi by the change of the puzzle to the basement to play a shadow game. Yugi warned him not to make yami angry, but duke's father wanted revenge so badly, he began the game him and yugi's grandfather played, but ended up in a panalty game anyways. This caused him to go mad and start a fire.
One of the editing was bakura's first meet with Yugi. Although, season 0 already reveals that. One I want to mention was Kaiba's ghost. In the manga, it was a puppeteer with a puppet of Kaiba. Yami dueled him and gave him a penalty game for mocking Kaiba, which he took as an insult. Another one was Duke's duel with Yami or should I say yugi. Duke took Yugi's puzzle in the manga, 'cause he wanted the power of the puzzle. Duke's father wanted revenge for yugi's grandpa beating him in a shadow game
I like this, because you're not bashing as much as you're revealing things that did change. Overall, both shows were based off the manga, which the show changed from more than anything. If you read the manga, Marik did go after yami, thinking he killed his father, but he wasn't just using a card game to get his revenge (not completely). Yugioh wasn't just based on duel monsters. Yami was not called King of games, because he was good a duel monsters. He was good at ANY game. (read next comment)
I know im really late but in terms of story changes they did change alot in the Doma or Waking the Dragons story line, mostly to do with Dartz henchmen and their back stories
yes, because taking over the world with a childs card game makes alot more sense then taking revenge with a childs card game... makes perfect sense when you dont think about it
the yugioh U.S dub was awesome when i was a kid watching itsince i never noticed anything strange but when i saw the japanese it felt i was watching something completely different and realized how much 4kids ruined with the story and edits
i always assumed marik went after yami because the pharoh ( a long time ago ) made a law or something saying the ishtar family must live in the tomb. but i never acually saw the show. i watch ygotas
Actually if you look at Yu-Gi-Oh Uncensored and a few other websites that compare the original Japanese version to the 4Kids dub, there were some parts of the dub that were heavily edited to cater to a younger audience. For instance during the actual duels, they not only edited the outside of the cards, but the some of the actual images on the cards. They also edited out religious symbols, profanity, etc.
I agree with you though. Yu-Gi-Oh, along with Pokemon, was one of 4Kids' better dubs.
At least LittleKuriboh is here in this world to point out all the continuity flaws and make puns on them, along with recent events and the god-awful spin-offs.
I have a good answer behind Bakura's accent. Because in both versions, he was an exchange student, but in the Japanese version, where he came from was never specified (though hinted that he may have had come from another region in Japan, this was never confirmed). Therefore, the country he came from was up for grabs by 4Kids. And since making him British would be far less controversial than giving him a different, more stereotypical accent, say, French, it was fitting to make him British.
I have nothing to counter with regarding Joey's Brooklyn Accent though. Even though in both versions...get this...they all live in Japan! Don't believe me? In the 4Kids dub, they were excited to be invited over to America, even though their inviter was Pegasus, a former enemy of theirs.
That aside, even though his Brooklyn Accent doesn't fit where he lives, I do feel that it actually fits his character very well. I grew into it, and I really like it. A lot more than I like Sanji anyways.
theres ALOT more editing and story change than that they took out the blood and they changed the opening (obviously) and they took out a scene with yugi's mom (it didn't show her face but you saw the back of her head and heard her voice) and the sexual references that wher made in it
I have a question. Did you read the manga? It makes this look like crap. I was a fan of the show since I was nine, then I read the manga when I was thirteen, and I now can't watch it without laughing or weeping.
The voices are alright, but the accents.....and the overuse of Anzu's (Tea) friendship speeches. She does them plenty in the manga, but the anime overkills it. Like Naruto's "Believe it".
The guns Scene...yeah.....I would have made them bright blue with a lightning bolt on the side, at least it looks like toy gun and a kid could at least think its a ray gun....
It makes great sense that the 'killing father' plot point was taken out of the english dub considering they kept out the whole scene of yami marik killing him cuz it was like, too violent. but good goin :D personally this was the best done of the voice actors.. better british than austrialian like what ted lewis does for jack atlas in 5D x.x
While I agree with your review and I don't disagree with your opinions as presented in this video, I found this difficult to watch primarily because of your terrible, terrible attempt to do a British accent. You also stuttered a lot, and that was distracting. "Why the Hell did they make Bakura British?" is a funny thing to say in a faked British accent...
Faked british accent?! Lol I wasn't putting on an accent, that's how I normally talk strange as it may seem, but thanks for the comment and your right I was stuttering alot in this video wasn't I? =)
4kids edited out an entire season of yu-gi-oh. To say the least i was a little dissapointed that you didnt pick them up on that. But away from that topic, i would just like to say, nice review. I enjoyed this and the other two videos. Well done.
"My name is Malik Ishtar, you killed my father, prepare to die."
Four kids really ruined the animes of my childhood... I actually think I tried to get a "Jelly-filled doughnut" from my aunt's bakery once... I didn't accept the real thing... into warping kid's minds be ye 4kids?
For the card editing they also edited the Monster Reborn card. From a cross to a weird mechanical thingy. If you pause really quickly when it's being activated you can see it. It's actually quite funny =D
Actually, the reason for Marik (or Malik, his japanese name) to take revenge at the pharao was because he was the pharao's gravekeeper. isn't there this one scene where yugi is talking all this mystical deep stuff with yami/yami yugi/atem/whatever, while in the japanese version that conversation is actually all about yugi totally having a crush on Tea?
"you want the truth? You can't handle the truth!" <- I believe that's how 4kids people think about actual children.
Want my opinion of 4Kids dub of YGO? 3 words: They. Ruined. It.
As for other plot changes? There are some minor ones in certain episodes, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
The person they ruined the most was Seto Kaiba. He started off as an asshole, but he gradually became better character-wise. 4Kids made him retain that asshole persona. While funny, it ruined his character development.
Y THE HELL DID THEY EDIT THE GUNS OUT! I dont see y, i see kids like 4 or 5 using toy guns, and i dont care how much thumbs down i get 4 this, mii opinion will not chhange! :)
The invisible gun thing? XD I caught that when I was seven years old. I was thinking, "Where is this guy's gun?" Proving that 4kids is wrong about kids paying attention to things. Admittedly, Yugioh was my favorite show back in elementary school, but when you think of how it could've been better, it kinda feels...well, like something was lost.
Also, I agree about the Shadow Realm thing. How is directly getting sent straight to hell better than dying? 4kids' logic fails to amaze me.
i love the very first yugi cos it made sense and i think they shouldnt have done anymore i hate gt and the newest one 5d i think, theres just no point to them.
The reason that they had to edit the cards was cos of FCC regulations which say they cant advertise in a TV Show most likely the reason why in Drake & Josh they say Pintendo GS instead of Nintendo DS
just wonderful yu gi is my favorite anime and 4Kids made it delightful (to be fair i did watch it as a young boy around 5 or 6 though even now that i know both sides i still think 4Kids did what they rarely do a good job) though the invisable gun thing is weird but makes a little sense that they would point at seto though if they were to attack him it would go like this: [Evil guy] seto im going to kidnap you with the magic of my G-Rated finger (rather then DIE BITCH DIE followed by shooting)
You didn't notice the HUGE story change? In the japanese version, YGO is about the pharoah trying to remember his origin. 4Kids decided that YGO should be about card games. WTF where they thinking?
Those were technically two different series. There was series 1 and series 2. The first did poorly and the second did awesome, so 4kids picked the second one up instead of the first.
But it was still about the Pharoah discovering his past. The card game may be the central plot but the overall story of the original version is still about Pharoah trying to find himself.
After they glorified the card game as being the greatest thing in the world.
Seriously, the 4Kids version treats the card game like it's the ultimate thing and you GOTTA HAVE IT!!!!
Not sure if the Japanese version is the same attitude but from what I saw, the card game was not as important as searching for Pharaoh's memory in the japanese version. 4Kids turned that around and playing a card game was more important.
The song made me lol. I agree with the voices. The accents are random. Yeah the guns are soooo stupid to censor yet so funny now. XD Well the describtion didn't make sense about the next thing, but I know what you'll talking about.
Yeah the sub and manga are much deeper, but I see your point about the revenge thing. Good impersonation of Marik by the way.
Wow 9/15 is pretty low for best. Glad to see you don't absolutly hate it, and it's charming to hear it's one of your favs.
4Kids actually changed the appearance of the cards because of an FCC law that states that you can't advertise for the series while the episode is airing. Apparently, they thought that if they left the cards alone, they would be advertising the actual playing cards, thus breaking a law. Stupid law......seriously stupid.
Also, in episode 30 Yugi gets his legs chained to a duel field by a jester Marik possessed. Laser Discs appear and the Jester says, "the more life points you lose the closer the discs will get to you". The edit here is that 4kids sunk so low here and said that it won't harm anyone the discs will just send your soul to the-you know. This evolved into my favorite YGOA joke (Oh, please save me from the discs that won't harm me in anyway). Because of this show I now love to critisize stories.
That was hilarious! You do Marik better than LK does. Well, maybe not but still that was hilarious. Also, I can explain the Brooklyn accent. This also explains Jounichi's American name. He resembles the character Jeff Conoway played on Taxi, Bobby Wheeler. I can't explain the British accent. Ofcourse, if there is one character that looks British I would have to choose Bakura. Also, lol you said ...in America!
There was a part in one episode where yugi encounters three monoliths in a room in pegasus's mansion in the dubbed version, but in the japanese version instead yugi encounters three crosses. Almosts sounds like a crucixion referrence if you ask me. This is the part where it opens up pegasus's motivation in collecting Mokuba and Kaiba and Yugi's Grandfather's soul for the resurrection of Cecelia, Pegasus's dead wife.
I didn't like the show because I first saw the show in the english dub and it seemed retarded. Then I saw the Japanese dub and saw it was MUCH better. So that's how I got into it.
Well, Kids WB is airing it now. I haven't seen the Japanese version so I wouldn't know if they changed it too much. The only thing I saw that really sucks about it is the theme song. They put the absolute worst theme song on there. As long as you skip the theme song I think it just might be bareable. I went through the first episode because I didn't turn the t.v. on in time to watch the theme song.
Actually, believe it or not, from the Choices they gave people that was the best song to pick without giving any of the plot away. And it reminded me of one of the japanese endings.
yea the jap 1 is much beeter its alot more dark and not for the target age 4kids aimed it for and the openings were diifernt every season and they were real songs
it's raped on all accounts. the voices mostly, but, then again. it's 4kids, what the hell do you expect? Just watch the japanise version and compare it to the english version.
Yugi has a Dad? o-o Also (sorry for double comments) OMG. When he did the Marik Voice I though he might of Had Little Kuriboh somewhere in the room with him to do it... o-o I was waiting for him to say 'Shammity Sham Sham!'
xD I loved that plothole in the 'Find Joey' Sub-plot. 'I found Joey! Kthnksbai!' One thing that isn't so much a story change as a line brought totally out of context is that in the First Episode, Yami(Atem) Tells Kaiba about the Heart of the Cards, and then 4-Kids decided to take that and it felt like Atem couldn't go for 5 minutes without saying something about the Heart of the Cards, while it was barely mentioned in the Japanese version after the 1st Ep.
Yu-Gi's mother was edited out the whole show. I saw the Japanese version and saw his mother walking and talking to him. What was the reason for her to be edit out? Was her breast too big? 0_o
it was so funny when you asked why bakura was british in the dub! I always wondered that too. Then I saw the uncut dub of yugioh and I laughed so hard. Bakura has a texas accent which is a common dub treatment for japanese accents but why the hell is he british! It's really funny though I think it's episode 12 or 13 and he's like "my mileniumk ring was all pointin' to your milenium puzzle ,Yugi!" Lol but even good dubs like air gear made sora from new jersey! (although I am so no big deal to me)
Nice Vid. I like to point another story change. In the dubbed version of the Doom Saga, Rafael's family was saved from the shipwreck and forgotten about Rafael. In the original, Rafael's family was killed in the shipwreck.
The invisible guns and the cards were the only edits you could find?? That's absolutely insane! Google yu jyo, go to the first website, and they'll give play-by-play descriptions of the English episodes, compare them to what actually happens in the Japanese, and they have lots of pictures of edits.
I doubt Ted Lewis is actually British, because sometimes his accent sounds really forced and fake. I doubt Wayne Grayson is from Brooklyn too, though I haven't looked much for him...
In one of the episodes 4kids show a clip of Tristan and joey taking his milenium puzzle from season 0, but they never dub season 0 lol

Um, the accent thing...
In the origional Japanese, Joey's speech patterns were very plain, and they thought a Brooklyn accent would reflect that.
Bakura used very polite language, so they thought giving him a British accent would have the same type of effect.
Whether they succeeded deepends on the listener.

4kids' logic fails to amaze me.

to the edit umm they edited out yugi's
mom she only in it once most people don't know she exist I thought yugi was an orphan for the longest time and I think
you should watch hadryannah's
4kids Yu-Gi-Oh! edits it points out how
much they really did cut trust me on this one please watch it it's not me trying to
advertise I think all yugioh fans should see it
sailorsilverrose 2 years ago
The reason that they had to edit the cards was cos of FCC regulations which say they cant advertise in a TV Show most likely the reason why in Drake & Josh they say Pintendo GS instead of Nintendo DS
3AnimeMangaLover 2 years ago
also, my friend likes the japanese version of YGO, and she says that on the pics on the original japanese cards, the costumes are much MUCH sleazier!

Hmm...I don't know about Joey. But Bakura was British to represent his polite Japanese speech. I think. Nice review! I love Yu-Gi-Oh.

just wonderful yu gi is my favorite anime and 4Kids made it delightful (to be fair i did watch it as a young boy around 5 or 6 though even now that i know both sides i still think 4Kids did what they rarely do a good job) though the invisable gun thing is weird but makes a little sense that they would point at seto though if they were to attack him it would go like this: [Evil guy] seto im going to kidnap you with the magic of my G-Rated finger (rather then DIE BITCH DIE followed by shooting)

For real! They changed the story that much! When I think of it the 4kids version do sound kind of better. I want to watch both.

You didn't notice the HUGE story change? In the japanese version, YGO is about the pharoah trying to remember his origin. 4Kids decided that YGO should be about card games. WTF where they thinking?
TKGB2006 2 years ago 2
Those were technically two different series. There was series 1 and series 2. The first did poorly and the second did awesome, so 4kids picked the second one up instead of the first.
d01hazel 2 years ago
But it was still about the Pharoah discovering his past. The card game may be the central plot but the overall story of the original version is still about Pharoah trying to find himself.
TKGB2006 2 years ago
but the 4kids version actually did address that the Pharaoh was trying to find his lost memories.
llawson15 2 years ago 2
After they glorified the card game as being the greatest thing in the world.
Seriously, the 4Kids version treats the card game like it's the ultimate thing and you GOTTA HAVE IT!!!!
Not sure if the Japanese version is the same attitude but from what I saw, the card game was not as important as searching for Pharaoh's memory in the japanese version. 4Kids turned that around and playing a card game was more important.
TKGB2006 2 years ago 3
The song made me lol. I agree with the voices. The accents are random. Yeah the guns are soooo stupid to censor yet so funny now. XD Well the describtion didn't make sense about the next thing, but I know what you'll talking about.
Yeah the sub and manga are much deeper, but I see your point about the revenge thing. Good impersonation of Marik by the way.
Wow 9/15 is pretty low for best. Glad to see you don't absolutly hate it, and it's charming to hear it's one of your favs.
LaughterandCandy 3 years ago 3
Don't forget that they cutout footage from many of the episodes for stupid reasons. There are more edits than what you have.
ArnulfoSalgado 3 years ago
4Kids actually changed the appearance of the cards because of an FCC law that states that you can't advertise for the series while the episode is airing. Apparently, they thought that if they left the cards alone, they would be advertising the actual playing cards, thus breaking a law. Stupid law......seriously stupid.

ino the voices did comfuse me and as for the edting omg i could be here all day ^^
littleskullgirl 3 years ago
Also, in episode 30 Yugi gets his legs chained to a duel field by a jester Marik possessed. Laser Discs appear and the Jester says, "the more life points you lose the closer the discs will get to you". The edit here is that 4kids sunk so low here and said that it won't harm anyone the discs will just send your soul to the-you know. This evolved into my favorite YGOA joke (Oh, please save me from the discs that won't harm me in anyway). Because of this show I now love to critisize stories.
NeverAloneForever 3 years ago

Well, Kids WB is airing it now. I haven't seen the Japanese version so I wouldn't know if they changed it too much. The only thing I saw that really sucks about it is the theme song. They put the absolute worst theme song on there. As long as you skip the theme song I think it just might be bareable. I went through the first episode because I didn't turn the t.v. on in time to watch the theme song.
steelangelkurumifan1 3 years ago
Actually, believe it or not, from the Choices they gave people that was the best song to pick without giving any of the plot away. And it reminded me of one of the japanese endings.
Herarry 3 years ago
I'll admit, it was the best out of the other choices but it still sucks to me. Everyone has different opinions. So lets just agree to disagree?
steelangelkurumifan1 3 years ago
yea the jap 1 is much beeter its alot more dark and not for the target age 4kids aimed it for and the openings were diifernt every season and they were real songs

xD I loved that plothole in the 'Find Joey' Sub-plot. 'I found Joey! Kthnksbai!' One thing that isn't so much a story change as a line brought totally out of context is that in the First Episode, Yami(Atem) Tells Kaiba about the Heart of the Cards, and then 4-Kids decided to take that and it felt like Atem couldn't go for 5 minutes without saying something about the Heart of the Cards, while it was barely mentioned in the Japanese version after the 1st Ep.

it was so funny when you asked why bakura was british in the dub!

In the original, Rafael's family was killed in the shipwreck.

is you on drugs? yugioh was probably one of 4kids WORST dubs, they pretty much stripped the show of all the dignity it had to start off with

SailorStarfire07 3 years ago
The reason I only used 2 examples for the edits was simple because I didn't want to split this video in to two parts, but thanks for the info.
