2 dislikes? I bet you those people who disliked would rather to listen gaga or minaj instead of the carpenters or abba. those dislike people don't know how the generation back then went. and to those people who dislike, why dont you listen to our generation songs and back then songs. compare it.
How could two people actually click on "dislike" to this song? This woman had the most powerful voice of her time, and could outsing any female today if she had won her battle and survived. I listen to nothing but hard rock and heavy metal, but give credit where credit is due. Karen had a gift that's given very rarely, and was taken from us way too soon.
One of the best songs I´ve ever heard. What a wonderful voice, deep and fuel of love. Karen had the best voice ever. What a tragedy how her life ends. R.I.P.
@jetsito Es cierto es de Neil Sedaka no lo voy cambiar por ya esta .aclarado totalmente en el cd decia paul anka mil perdones y te agradesco a vos por la aclaracion saludines
I never heard this song before and it's probably one of the best that shows her voice and her ability to sing other than her brother's custom made songs (custom made for her voice). She also did a nice job with her cover of Mr Postman. I wish she had done more stuff without Richard, not because I don't like him, but just to see what her lovely voice is capable of. But even with her brother, she can sing softly or powerfully, sometimes in the same song. Nothing like her. She's was a 1 of a kind.
maravilhoso!!! linda canção!!! Paul anka é simplesmente um dos melhores do mundo. The carpenters, lindos! Que voz sem igual... Pena , Karen ter feito o que fez. Teria uma vida e uma carreira de muito sucesso . Adoro com eles e com Elvis. Simplesmente maravilhosos!!!! SAUDADES!!!!!
There are no "live" recordings of this song. According to Richard Carpenter, they never recorded this song during their concerts. Karen disliked this song. Although I think it showcases her sublime crystalline voice to full and beautiful effect!
I Remember Karen Carpenter when i was a kid i used to watch her on Sonny & Cher she would come on there show as a guest I learned a great deal from my parents but also from Karen Carpenter how to smile & be nice!! She was just a good hearted good person with a the best voice and she put her heart & soul into her songs thats what made her great she has boosted me when i was sad and helped me to get out of it and i will allways be indebted to her she saved me Karen in Heaven We L O V E YOU!!!
I was nine when this came out in 1975. I loved the song then and now. Hmmm... my parents must have known I was gay when I begged for the album... lol!
Favourite bit? 2.17 - the way she sings 'goooees" - more posh than any English public school girl! And let's not forget Richard's triple A plus arrangement - a supremely talented & doting brother provding the perfect backing for a 'blessed' & perfect (and much missed) sister. Recently - their esteemed genius of a lead guitarist in early days - Tony Peluso - passed away too. Is a generation crossing over to make great music elsewhere? Does current generation realise what they owe them?
Person below says you can hear her lips move. YES - you can hear EVERY minute inflection in this FANTASTIC voice (and that owes a lot to quality of this upload) - Only point of difference with mrob75 below is that u that can tell its Karen from moment she OPENS her mouth and draws a breath!! And when she FIRST opened a mouth and drew breath God blessed humanity and breathed his spirit into her. Because this voice is DIVINE! Greatest female vocalist ever? - I'm with improvguru below on that one.
The greatest example of how a bass line can make love to a female voice (the most wondrous female voice) in the history of popular music. Incidentally I can't find a 'live' video of Carpenters performing this song - can anybody point me to one? Atleast, mercifully, you stuck just to pictures of Karen and Richard in this one and Great sound quality too.
@jezkn You write well, and you speak the truth. Salute to you!
In the USA, we currently have no popular female vocalist who can touch Karen for sheer emotional power and gravitas. Interestingly, in German popular music, we have some female vocalists who come close to Karen, but the popular music industry in the USA is nearly ruined by the postmodernist infection of the 1990's (Rap, Hip-Hop, Grundge, etc.), & it never recovered.
@bboucharde Oh Brock - thnks for replying! It reminds me to listen again! Hairs are up on back of neck, Im getting shivers, goose pimples, palpitations and ghosts of tears are forming. INCREDIBLE or as French friend says-INCROYABLE! I will explore German singers like Helen Fischer (from your channel). It's complete unknown to me- Dont seem to get links to them on YouTube. Last German singer i recall was Lotte Lenya! Some great USA singers still like LeAnn Rimes but no - not 'popular' any more
@jezkn Yes! This recording (Karen's) is simply ethereal---This lady went straight to Heaven! ..... As for some German (& Austrian) vocalists who can bring you to tears with their voices and beauty, you have already mentioned Helene Fischer (who is superb). Also try: Sigrid & Marina, Gitti & Erika, Claudia Jung, and Gaby Albrecht. There are plenty of links to these wonderful women on YouTube.
@bboucharde I'm on to it - this is all new to me - but that's what YouTube is all about - stretching your boundaries - and challenging your prejudices - and getting your fellow YouTubers to educate you - YEEEEH!!
German vocalists - I never even new they existed !! But then the English underestimated the German football team didn't they and they had to be educated!.
she died 1983 the same year i was born,,,,,but i've learn to love their songs.. when she sings its like you can hear her lips as it closes listen very carefully....wish i was old as you guys your so lucky to have been able to listen to her voice dur9ing the 70's.
@checkavailability175 When songs like "Solitaire" came on the radio back in 1975, even though I was only 14 years old back then, I had to stop what I was doing just to listen to her lush and velvety voice.
Karen had that kind of voice that upon the first opening note, one could tell that the voice belonged to Karen Carpenter. I am blessed to be as old as I am to remember when this record (and others Carpenters records) were played and heard on the radio...I miss those AM radio days...Moreover, I miss Karen...

This song is so special to me. My mum's fiancée Tommy had it played at his funeral. He was an amazing man, who was taken by that dreaded disease cancer :-(. R.I.P. Tommy Clark. xxx I love you Robert
