  • ALWAYS good when I need to SMILE.

  • Thanks for posting. My mom played this all the time :-)

  • i like

  • My best friend reminds me of him, I get very emotinal, shame I cant sing we could of been the next them lol

  • Sylvester took us back to church in his rendition of this song. You can feel it and Lord knows it should do move you to shout, to jump for joy, to give a testimony or whatever; but it moves the soul and the body all at once , to do something , May He rest in peace. I even enjoy the rap (not today's meaning of rap) and how he says certain words in his girly (no harm meant) proper way.lol but all said "I love this song and sylvester

  • I had always liked the other disco hits of Sylvester feat. Martha & Izora, but it wasn't until I heard this song that I "got it". When people talked about how great he and they were, it took listening to this hymn through the imperfections of scratched vinyl, poor sound quality of compressed MP3 files and notebook speakers for me to understand just how talented they were. I get emotional everytime I try to wrap my head around the idea of a trio sounding like a choir. Wow..just, wow.

  • Thank U Sylvester and 2 Tons of Fun! I remember first hearing of U! I was a teen, and I said to myself, "Self, this is gonna be one ot the best songs U will ever hear sung!" 40plus years later, "It still is one of the best songs I have ever heard!" This Is Music! Peace!

  • @gpashby777 ,.Thanks for sharing!

  • @SuperXavier30 Sylvesters did this song first, not Patti labelle...I love Patti but his version is my Favorite

  • @debbie10570 Patti labelle did this song first, she, her husband, and Budd Elliso wrote this song....His version came out in 1979 and Patti's came out 1978 on EPIC label....and im sorry no disrecpect but if u listen to Patti's live version of this song it is far superior than this...He doesnt sing very well....he is quite pitchy and airy in my opinion.....NO DISRESPECT!!!

  • @debbie10570 LOL What? This song was thought of when Patti read her husband's diary & saw what he had written about their son. This is a Patti LaBelle classic. She released it in 1977 from her self-entitled album "Patti LaBelle". This is one of the songs that brought her out after "Lady Marmalade".

  • I been around .

  • Martha Killed her part!!!

  • "Its okay Daddy, You my friend", he said over and over, as he gently patted his father's forehead.

Zuri was repeating what his father had been telling him from the time he was a baby.

"You are my best friend". Armstead was so moved he never touched another joint again. And he never forgot that moment or those words of reassurance from his son.

Don't Block the Blessings: Revelations of a Lifetime.

    Peace!

  • So much division in Love!

    Good people, Patti gave the lowdown on the origins of this composition in her memoir back in 1996. This is how she told it;

During the months that we were drinking heavily and hanging out at the Roundhouse,

Armstead was also smoking reefer. One night, after too much booze and too much smoke, he lay sick and out of it on the couch. Zuri was only a toddler, but he knew something was wrong with his dad. And so he tried to comfort him.

  • @qsbird - perhaps so...its been 15 years since I read the book..I thought he was hungover sleep from drink and Zuri was trying to wake. Reefer - Drink...it created a beautiful song.

  • Patti's husband did not write this song. Actually in Patti's autobiography, she wrote how the song came to her. While her husband was alseep (If I recall correctly, had some drinks beforehand) her son, Zuri, then a toddler was attempting (unsuccessfully) to wake him, in doing so he repeated to his Dad.."you are my friend". Witnessing this sweet endearing scene, it gave birth to this song. That's the way she tells it...

  • @tmharr63 You are also incorrect PATTI herself describes the song was written because her son walked up to his Father while smoking reefer ~ the son thought his Dad was sad and walked up to him and kept saying "Dad you are my friend." he said it over and over and as of that day his Father never ever smoked another reefer and the idea for the song was born ~~~~~ Patti tells the story herself that way!

  • he killed it with the weather ladys

  • Correct, this song was sung by Patti first not Sylvester. Both versions are GREAT in their own special way... :-)

  • Music Fans, as much as I love Patti and her version of this song, it was Sylvester who recorded this song FIRST! And I for one, happen to kike his rendition much better!

  • @bxnigg My Friend, as great as this song is, it’s still a cover version! A rendition and not the original as you state.

Please take a minute and read the video description, and then if you still feel it is incorrect please feel free to enlighten me…Cheers!

  • @bxnigg Sorry to dissappoint you, but the words to this song was written by patti Labelle's husband and she happened upon it as she was house cleaning and later took it to her musical director Budd Ellison and they finished it. So The song is a Patti Labelle original.

  • @MrPattifan01 was not written by her Husband ~ her son Zuri was the Insperation to write the song

  • @bxnigg I love his version ~ Patti wrote the song though and she sings it great too ~ but Sylvester's version gives me the goosebumps...................

  • @bxnigg I love his rendition as well

  • @bxnigg

I understand why you thought that. This version is so complete & sung with such live gospel passion that my soul also thought that it was the original up until last year.

  • tears!

  • It will be a true honor that on the 5th of August i will be doing the part of Lady Izora Rhodes and as i study her, she amazes me more and more every time. love it

  • @Sirivi1 ,.Love to know more!

  • Great voice ..

  • Sylvester will allway be a legend rip

  • Yeeeesssss!

  • This gentleman was a true musical talent, I think that because of his sexual orientation he does not get the recognition that he deserves....and that 's a shame. The boy was bad.

  • @kmiles8176,..Well said my Friend, Sylvester James most definitely possessed one of the most Soulful voices of any generation!

Long may has unique voice live on!

  • @SuperXavier30 Very true..but the true fans keep the voice alive.

  • @mrmaximillionaire ,..Absolutely!

  • @kmiles8176 I agree with you as well; When I learned of Sylvester's death, it was like losing a real friend. He was amazingly talented, a true artist. I didn't even know Miss Patti Labelle had originally done this song; but I can only hope that she was pleased with Sylvester's rendition. I always say, if you are going to cover a song, do it right or don't bother doing it at all! And Sylvester, you did it to DEATH!! Love you and miss you still!

  • @kmiles8176 You are so true...I don't care about his sexual orientation, it's about his gift that God blessed him with...I truly miss him...

  • dont forget patti labelle wrote this song. with her then husband armstread edwards and musical director james BUDD ellison in 1977

  • had the pleasue of meeting sylvester early 70 before disco. went to a rehearsal on

cole off sunset. We became friends and I loved him very much. wonderful and brave artist. one of the bravest ever.

  • @MsCarpinteria,.Your so right, "one of the bravest ever"!.. No doubt you still have fond memories from back in the day. Thanks for sharing!

  • This song never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I hope he's singing his heart out in heaven.

  • @yotleo,.You’re getting emotional now!, just wait until we get to Heaven and see Sylvester and Izora centre stage!. Can you picture them yet?!

  • @yotleo I REALLY DO TOO, I TELL YOU, I CANNOT HOLD MYSELF TOGETHER WHEN I HEAR IT. ALL HUMANITY IS REPRESENTED IN HIS/HER VOICE. MAY ALL OF BE THANKFUL TO HEAR THE WORDS AND THE SPIRIT BEHIND THE WORDS!

  • Thanks for posting without all that religious mumbo jumbo some attempt to ascribe to this song!

  • @Gudgeissotolerable,..You’re welcome!

  • Love this song... RIP, Sylvester -- you wrote your own ticket in this life, and left a lasting legacy....

  • @trickywillet,..So true and appreciated!

  • He had some good songs Just like " you make me feel mighty real" and "Stars" . he was very good at Disco

  • @Anders1135,..The very best my Friend!

  • SuperXavier30, much réclame for posting this Sylvester ditty. Although, given the lyrics, styling and vocals of the powerhouses Wash & Rhodes, I would almost call this a Hallelujah. The way the song moved me, it definitely felt more like a Sunday morning than a Saturday night. Thank you for this oft forgotten gem..

  • @WilliamCarole1977,..Your more then welcome!. I so agree Sylvester and the girls really took us to church!

  • Wicked upload, we have this album on Cassete!!!!!! have goose bumps all over Xxxxxxxxx

  • @brozangi,.Cassette!!! Lol!..I hear you though! As often as I play this gem it still pulls on the heart strings with the same intensity as when I first heard it! Appreciate you stopping by.

  • I love how Martha and Izora start off so smooth and then let loose! God - Where has real singing gone?

  • @voceangelo....a question I often ask myself!..Thanks for stopping by!

  • Unbelievable talent, saw Sylvester with Izora and Martha at MSG along the same show also featured Luther Vandross with Change;back in the day, need I say that the concert was unreal. Sylvester, Izora and Martha were humming without a mike and gave me goose bumps. OK. Enough said.

  • @TheElijah90,.What an incredible line up! Hold on and treasure those memories my Friend. Thanks for sharing!

  • Yeaaahhh! babyboy This One Gets Me Ever Time Yall. My Friends

  • @jacksor2,..You and I my Friend!..Cheers!

  • Martha Wash and the other one (sorry cannot remember her name), gives me goosebumps when I hear them. Somebody say this is truly chuccch music. Thanks to whomever posted this. I love this song so much.

  • @hilz21993,..My Friend the other name your searching for is the late Izora Rhodes. I so agree,. “Church” really sounds so beautiful today!. Take Care!

  • I wish he was still alive, I remember him growing up, you will be missed RIP

  • @FrankieJMcGraw... and so evident, judging by the beautiful tributes on here!..

  • will someone please tell me who does this better [Pattie comes close] but this is the all time winner especially the live version. it don't get better.

  • With cd's we lost the notes the jackets provided. Sure some cd notes appear but on thin paper that can be lost and my trifocals can't read

  • @Kendezie,

Agreed, the gatefold sleeve, with incredible Photography and Art work, the Lyrics clear as day, the joyous sound of the crackles and pops, all a part of the beautiful vinyl experience.

Now cd’s which I also love {more for the convenience} will always take second place to vinyl.

Also were now at age where we can fit our entire Music collection in our pockets with portable I Pods and MP3 players!. Sadly sleeve notes, lyrics & credits seem to be of little importance these days!.Cheers!

  • The only other person but Patti who could sing this song

  • @Kendezie..Come to think of it, the only other person I know who sang this was Faith Evans, who really pulled it off!..Thanks!

  • My husband sang with local groups in the D.C. area and I was exposed to musical performances of Teddy pendergrass with Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, the Delphonics, Manhattans, Main ingredients, )Ray, Goodman, and Brown) I often heard them comment on the very rare talent of Sylvester that could not be "duplicated". When I read that Bishop Walter Hawkins preached his funeral..I wandered over to this page. R.I.P. Bishop Hawkins-you and Sylvester should be having a good time up in heaven w/Al

  • @1010503,I really had no idea that Bishop Walter Hawkins preached at Sylvester’s funeral.

Your list of names brings back so many memories of a Golden era in Soul music. When music had a Composer, Producer and an Arranger, all on separate duties alongside the musicians. It seems those creative days are slowly drifting away with technology in music.

It’s also great to hear those guys’s singing the praises of Sylvester; I think Harvey Fuqua was a great influence on him!..Cheers!

  • People keep saying Patti's voice is similar to his voice on this song.. I think that his own signature takes it all away beyond belief. He truly nailed it. Back in the 70's a group called "Dynamic Superior" included 2 brothers. (This was in D.C.) One of the brothers even looked like Sylvester, and he could bring the walls down in the club. To this day, I still have not heard any voice that could override his or Sylvester's.

  • @1010503,The Dynamic Superiors sang one of my favorite Soul ballads from the 70's "Cry When You Want To”, and you're right, there is certainly a similarity in their voices!..Sylvester certainly did nail this!..Cheers!

  • Sylvester, such a beautiful spirit and way ahead of his time. This world was NOT ready for you!! Thank God your music keeps you on this side. Rest well, angel.

  • @likeitsgolden26 ,Amen!

  • R.I.P. Harvey Fuqua - July 27, 1929 – July 6, 2010.

  • I have always loved his voice..This is one of my all time favorite songs

    This man could sing !!!

    RIP

  • @ElishaRsmsey18,Touche!!

  • i have just posted my thoughts on sylvester on another great sylvester site, and i came to you as i love this song... and i saw syl do this and saw patrick cowley and the superb two tons way back in 79 in london....and was lucky to see sylvester come out on stage an hour before the concert in a full length fur coat to look over the stage and i waved to him and he came over to me and we had a few words?...bless him what a lovely man.

  • @BTOPENWORLD,Thanks for sharing those memories, the fact that he shared "two min’s" with you itself is a testament as to the nature of the man!...Thanks!

  • I saw this performance and would love to see it again can some one post it. I love this!

  • Thx for posting. Do u have more tracks from this album ?

  • @cchambers5, You're Welcome,most tracks are available across YT!

  • i love his music does and one have I CANT FORGET by him?

  • So much joy from so many memories. This performance is a concert at the Castro Theatre--in the heart of the "community." I missed this rendition hvg moved to SF in '87, but was fortunate enough to see him (in what became his final performance) at the I-Beam in the Haight. He sang "Don't Stop" which were his final words to the crowd. I can still hear our screams of joy and sadness--as we knew he would soon be leaving us. He was a special gift from the Universe. Thnx 4 sharing his heart again.

  • @sfbranmuff ,Thanks very much for sharing your memories, it's always great to hear from people that took that journey alongside Sylvester.

  • He did a great remake of this song and made it his own. I love it.

  • @516azizah,Spot-On!

  • extaordinary talent with a story like no other but not the Queen of Disco darling! Donna Summer, undisputed, but Sylvester is a category all by himself. He is not the Queen of Disco, he is SYLVESTER!

  • Remember Sylvestor so well! HE was INCREDIBLE and the man could blow and so could his back up singers! Ms. Thang could appear on the stage in a 3 piece suit, or he may come out in a gown. That was Sylvestor! His voice was amazing! I loved him so much and I was devastated when he passed. In high school, we would play his songs all the time. RIP Sylvestor my love. Let the lord watch over you and Ms. Izora who is with you as well!

  • @debgirl12000 ,So kind of you to share your fond memories!..Thank You!

  • This is nice. The back-up singers should have had this song written for each other, because they certainly sing it like it was!! Not to take anything away from the featured artist(Sylvester), Martha & Izora turn this song OUT* There wont' be a better version sung of this song at any point*

  • @onewhonever ,Indeed, Martha and Izora were very close, they performed in Gospel groups together even before they had met the flamboyant Sylvester, who on this track puts it perfectly "We Love Each Other Ya"!

  • Long live Sylvester!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Awson artist... Miss your music !!! Luv u

  • Sylvester is a True Legend!!

  • the best old time song i ever heard he did very good i love it.

  • @Vantinette ,Appreciated!!

  • Yes, I agree! regardless of the lifestyle he could sing almost better than any woman I know. And he did not give in to what he wanted or believed. But after viewing Unsung last night, it brought back so many memories...

Yes, Sylvester will truly be missed but left a legacy of GREAT songs behind.

  • @DeeFulton ,Sylvester has always been one of our most underrated singers, but as you said his Great Music Legacy will always live on as a reminder of someone who dared to make that difference!

    Thanks for the comment!

  • I also saw the Unsung episode last night and it truly warmed my heart. He was totally one amazing individual and is sorely missed by all gay, straight, black, white, or purple.

  • @TheOKBLUE ,Absolutely!

  • Love it.

  • I saw the unsung episode on Sylvester last night and it was very good b/c it showed how he didn't change who he was for the sake of selling records. It is a shame his popularity was only confined to the "alternative lifestyle" community. I was moved to tears by this version of you are my friend and I know he is looking down smiling at the fact that living in the "alternative lifestyle" is now more acceptable in the mainstream.

  • @j85,Regardless of his lifestyle or sexuality,to me the one thing that shines in Sylvester is his Love, which transcends all.Listening to this for the umpteenth time still brings a warm glow to my Soul on every occasion! He's surely missed by a lot of us.

    Thanks for taking the time!

  • Fabulous!

  • Does anyone have the song by slyvester can't forget the love.........

  • I not the type of man who have tears come to his eyes, but I just watch unsung on T.V. One, they did a beautiful story on Slyvester, if you haven't seen it and your a Slyvester fan it's a must. Slyvester I'm a striaght man and I know your sprit hear me I just want you to know you were a wonderful human being, and I love you for being yourself. You are missed..............

  • @charliehusle Thanks for sharing the Love!

Living in the UK, I'm not aware of this Unsung programme, but I'll be sure to seek it out!..Cheers!

  • @SuperXavier30 Thanks. I am a Patti LaBelle fanatic for 48 years. Her husband Armstead was inspired to write this song with her and James because of his relationship with their son Zuri who WAS and IS STILL ALIVE. Patti has only given birth ONE TIME the other children are adopted. I am here in Wash., D.C. friends with Patti first cousin Ann Holte.

  • @VTERRELL ,I really can't thank you enough for your input.Since your comment I did my own research into the origins of this song and I'm so Happy to discover that Patti's son Zuri is far from deceased!!

Never again will I rely on Wikipedia for such important information.Once again, I Thank You!

  • "Forget what u heard, he was the "Queen" of disco. He was a trendsetter, he was talented, comfortable in his skin. He's described as fabulous & fierce & after his death on 12/16/88 he is still holds the title. He once told his audience "Sometimes folks make us feel strange, but those folks, they'll just have to catch up." Confident & courageous he danced 2 the beat of his own drum & through his life we learned the true meaning of "keeping it real". Sylvester, I miss you!" © Sheila Chadwick

  • @smchadwic ,Much Appreciated!

  • wow...my mother played this song all the time. i was a little girl then but i absolutely loved this song. sylvester is the best...r.i.p.

  • First time I have ever heard this! O MY GOSH!!! I Have tears in my eyes and Im covered in goosebumps!!! I see why Patti wanted to touch this!! Martha should have made this hers instead of Patti!!!

  • @shacq4life ,Appreciated!

  • This is not an Sylvester Rendition of Patti Labelle's Classic but ther other way around.

This song is Sylversters song that was done way before Patti touched it. And when Patti came out with it everyone was speaking on how she did such a great job of Sylvesters song....

Just wanted to inform u on some truth.

    Take care

  • @WORKOUT66 I thought the song was written by Patti and her then husband Armstead.

    * Lead vocals by Patti LaBelle

    * Background vocals by assorted vocalists

    * Lyrics written by Patti LaBelle and Armstead Edwards

    * Music written and arranged by James "Budd" Ellison

    * Produced by David Rubinson

  • @mikenoil ,Your info is Spot On!..Cheers!

  • you are wrong patti co wrote the song. it's about he son

  • @sam95 Cheers!

  • @WORKOUT66 you are incorrect this is Patti Labelle's song Slyvester recorded it after Patti...Patti Labelle, Budd elison, and her husband wrote this song

  • @chakafan12 THATS RIGHT DONT FORGET IT LOL PATTI IS GETTING PAID EVERYTIME ITS PLAYED RECORED SHE IS THE BEST

  • @WORKOUT66 YOU PEOPLE NEED TO GET YOUR FACTSD STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU COMMENT. PATTI LABELLE ARMSTREAD EDWARDS AND JAMES BUDD ELLISON WROTE THIS SONG IN 1977 GET IT RIGHT

  • @czahair It's not an big issue for tomorrow will come whether the facts being straight or not!

  • THANK YOU!!! I wish I could get my hands on the footage of this performance. R.I.P Sylvester and Izora Rhodes. I LOVE THIS PERFORMANCE!!

  • @MzSherice ,I feel you on this,I too would love to see a video of this magnificent performance,so until it's on You Tube I'll close my eyes & make belive I'm there, right up front!

    Appreciate the comment!

  • THANK YOU FOR NEING MY FRIEND

  • @MzKat0517, I can tell this one really hit the Spot with you,Thanks for your Passion!

  • You are soooooo very welcome and I thank you putting this here cause I had never heard the live version. But he had a very beautiful voice that will never be forgotten. I remember him as a young girl. I wasnt old enough to hit the clubs but I would have given anything to attend one of his concerts. I tell my younger gay friends that they need to know about him, Jessie Johnson and many others of who paved the way for them at this day and age to be free today.

  • Cause back in those days gays were really not accepted so they really had to do alot of sacrificing to be acknowledged and I thank God ppl were so loving towards them in the music industry to allow them to do their work and be known. This is history and Sylvester is definitely in the BOOK.....You must excuse my typos from last nite cause I was feeling myself along with the alcohol. But nevertheless I love me some Sylvester.

  • @MzKat0517,Jessie Johnson gay!,I had no idea, not that it makes an ounce of difference!

    Cheers!

  • My apologies to the fullest...I dont know how Jessie Johnson came to my mind but I meant to say Jermaine Stewart...Please except my apology.

  • @MzKat0517 ,Not a problem,thanks for the response!

  • **BEING**
