This is a truly strange, haunting, and brilliant film. Liz Taylor and Marlon Brando in a movie together are simply electric, two of the best looking and most talented, charismatic actors of all time. Why in the hell did they not do more films together? It's a crying shame.

Brando is annoyed and angered by all the noise from the kitchen. You think he is going to blow up at Taylor, but instead he merely adjusts the kitchen clock and and mildly expresses his feelings. This is one of many little moments dramatizing the film's subject of a man tortured by feelings he dare not express.

You're probably right. At the time this movie was released, the Production Code had almost extinguished. The overt treatment of homosexuality, not to mention nudity, where shocking to audiences because they were new for the silver screen.
