simply let iTunes upgrade your ipod to the most current firmware version.

the hack actually downgrades the firmware to 1.2...

that's a good question. i think one way to tell is to see if your iPod Video has 'SEARCH'.

My understanding is that the 5g ipod didn't come with search and was never added to them. The 5.5g does have the SEARCH feature (nice). I hope that helps.
