@henkarars he has put it through some kind of layering editor. Im assuming its connected to a computer or sampler. It can only do 2 instruments at a time. They've just edited the video to make the product look better
@henkarars not a clue, i gave up trying to use it manually. Id say the best bet is to hook it up to the computer and use the software. play around for a while, its fiddly but you'll work it out through trial and error. also try the korg forums they are pretty helpful
I don't know much about these things but can I play and record something into the machine and then play it back and record further lines over the top? Cheers
Ive just gone and ordered a maschine MIKRO, but i also want a keyboard for easier synth making... Iam thinking of buying the mikroKORG xl but i need to be sure that they are both able to work with eachother...
Can the microkorg be used with the maschine to produce music via the maschine groove production software
Also will i need an audio interface or not? PLEASE I REALLY NEED HELP WITH THIS... Thankyou :)
The sounds that are produced by moving the octave selector at high rates of speed would sound very STEVE MILLERish if the built in delay effects (and there are 4 of them) were activated in any set of parameters.
Im in a pop-punk band and I play a korg x50 at the moment. I was wondering if this would be a good addition to my performance live. I prefer using hard synths because I feel like too much can go wrong with soft synths, but I heard about this and I thought it was awesome.
I'm thinking about getting either an xl or a korg r3. I've heard that these two machines have different sound characteristics, but dont they have the same mmt sound engine? Maybe I'm misinformed, could anyone clarify this and recommend which is the better synth, sound-wise, excluding the interface and build?
Hi does anyone know if i can get the same similar sounds on the XL that are on the original microkorg for instance on the original micrkorg if i were to use the setting A13 octave up would i be able to get the same sound but on the XL?
@iDanceWithTheDead No, you don't need a computer to play. The MicroKORG XL doesn't have any built-in speakers though, so you will have to do one of two things: 1. Use it with a keyboard amplifier (I use my bass guitar combo amp, which works just fine too. You shouldn't use a guitar amplifier though, you might damage the speakers). 2. Use a pair of headphones. If you want to use headphones, make sure you buy an 1/8 in. to 1/4 in. adapter, because the headphone jack on the MicroKORG XL is 1/4 in.
So you press the lowest E while the DOWN octave is yellow.
Without removing that finger, change the octave selector to UP yellow and then press the F# 1 whole step above the E. Your 2 fingers will only be 1 inch away from each other, but the interval between the 2 notes will be more than 4 octaves.
The bad thing about this is that it will only work as long as leave the 1st key down. As soon as you reset the 1st finger the interval will then only be 1 whole step NOT 4 whole octaves.
1) Put in a program with a SOLID note (no arpeggiator or sample and hold) and hold the key down with your finger.
2) Change the octave selector from say DOWN yellow to UP green and then play the next key in either direction (without removing your 1st finger from it's key).
Example; play the lowest E on DOWN yellow and then play the F# 1 step above that on UP yellow and the interval will be more than 4 octaves apart.
There is 1 feature that I'd like to tell you a little bit about. I don't even know if most people know about this (I discovered it by accident 2 days ago).
If you are playing a solid note and holding it, and then you change the octave selector 2 or 3 octaves in either direction WHILE still HOLDING DOWN the 1st note, if you then play a 2nd note somewhere else on the keyboard without removing your 1st finger from the keyboard, you'll hear a 2nd note anywhere from 3 steps to 4 octaves apart.
I wonder, can I use a different (full-sized) keyboard to play the microKorg XL? That case, the microKorgXL will act just as a sound module.. Thanks!!!
@KorgUSAVideos Thanks for the reply! I'm a total really newbie at using synths and these technologies.. So far, i havent seen a video that uses a different (full-sized) keyboard controlling the microkorgXL...

@MarctheDarc ah the microsampler is that latest sampler they put out? i heard good things about it but if its that shitty il becarfull to buy it and will go for a roland sp 404 sx then :)
@BeatsNRhyms The sampler itself is in many ways the best in its class, but it's entirely dependant on USB-connection for direct transfer of files (no SD-cards etc) and when the USB-connection then stops working and isnt receiving any support from Korg, then i get annoyed... When it's a problem they've admitted to, then changing minds and denying everything in a pathetic attempt to cover it, just doesnt fly... I'm VERY close to returning it to the store on account of breach of sales agreement.
@MarctheDarc thats sucks from korg serious..thnx for sharing the info because i almost bought one.now i will go with the roland sp
i hope korg will fix the problem so you still can use it ..but yeah if they not returning it to the store is the best option then because korg needs to bring stable maschines
@BeatsNRhyms Hey mate. I figured you'd like a small update. Today i took it to the store, and it was tested on another 2 Mac-configurations, all came up with same errors. So i got a full refund. A little bittersweet, since i still think it's a great sampler, but they simply cant cut support completely on a product so dependant on its USB-connection. Hope it gets thrown right in their face so they'll learn that it's just not ok to do that to their customers.
In 3:00 you use the formant hold function. But I can't find out haow I can use this... In the manual there's nothing about it and in google nobody knows about it can you explain how to use it?? Thanks KORG
@cheatstar5000 First, use the Function Select knob to select "Full Edit," the bottom row of parameters. Then turn knob #1 to the "VC FILT" page. Then, turn knob #2 to the "EF.SENS" parameter. Now, talk or sing into the microphone, and turn knob#3 all the way clockwise until "HOLD" appears on the display. Whatever sound you were making into the mic when "HOLD" appeared will be held.

i have a question about the drums. in another video on youtube, its called "Yakitori Song - KORG microKORG XL with GarageBand". when you watch this video and pause at about 21 seconds, you see the display saying "A 29 SYN DRUM". But in all the reviews and product descriptions i read and watched, nobody ever mentioned drums. i'm thinking about buying one and it's important for me to know if there are drums (and how many different ones) and how do i find them on the XL? please mb.
Quick Question: I just got one for Christmas, and I'm having trouble with the vocoder.
When I have the knob on the Vocoder section, I hold down a key, speak into the mic, and nothing comes out. The Vocoder button is pressed, orange light is on, no sound comes out. >: Help?
The simpler the answer the better, I don't understand a lot of this synthesizer lingo. >.<
@MiddleGrounder Simple! Go to the back of the Microkorg XL, and find a little switch, flick it to "XLR" Input. Volia! Have fun sounding like some robot about to destroy the human race...
Feels so plastic around the the edges and the base. Feels like a toy. Man! 6 batteries to play, it is a toy. Warning: Dont be fooled, when you fork out your hard earned money for this gadget, the sound engine is the business; no drum loops. My preference for it changed when I plugged it into a live sound system with subwoofers. Editor software is cool. The shops fooled me into thinking XL sounded bad, and I did for very long; they got to stop using 6 - 8 inch speakers. Can't wait to jam it live
getting this for xmas, looks incredible but I highly doubt the recorded vocoder parts are recorded with the stock mic...I played through the stock mic and it was horrendous...but I'm fine for replacing it, can't complain at the price I got it for :) <3
@megamattlolz The recorded vocoder parts were definitely recorded with the included gooseneck mic. In fact, every sound you hear in this video was created using the microKORG XL, even the drum sounds.
@KorgUSAVideos thanks very much, would the gooseneck mic be suitable for gigging? I'm not planning on throwing the microkorg around but it doesn't look too stable. I have no problem with buying a more stable mic if so...
I don't know much about keyboards just that I like to play them. This doesn't come with a built in speaker like my low-end keyboards do so what do you recommend I use (I don't want to use headphones)? Can I just plug this into an amp and start playing?
does the microkorg XL have an in-built sampler? - can i record and create my own tracks with loops and vocal harmonies and stuff like with the microkorg sampler?
@fhagaff No, the microKORG XL doesn't sample (although it can freeze a vowel sound using the Formant Hold features). You may want to check into the microSAMPLER.
@arpodyssey1 This is an original composition by Rich, who is demonstrating the microKORG XL in this video (and he appreciates your compliment). All the sounds in the song come from the microKORG XL.
@CallMeMcBad The short answer to your first question is "virtual," but that shouldn't be a brick wall. The microKORG XL a multi-modeling synthesizer. It does use realistic models of analog synthesis, but that's just the beginning. It can also perform digital synthesis, formant synthesis, PCM playback... and it can do all this with 8-note polyphony.
Hopefully, this also answers the "bang for the buck" question. As you explore sounds, set the FUNCTION SELECT to "Assign" and tweak the knobs.
I absolutely love this synth. I have various soft synths, a Roland JP-8000, and an Alesis Ion, and the mK XL is the most addictive and biggest sounding of them all. Some complain about the editing interface, but I have the Korg editing program and only use it for archiving sounds. Everything from the range of synth options to the sound of the oscs and filters, to the mini keys (which are amazingly fun to play) reeks of quality. I'm constantly amazed by what I can create with it.
@jc955 It's called Formant Hold. Check page 56 in your manual for the procedure. In this video, it's done using preset B38- "A Male," where the third knob (while knobs are in ASSIGN mode) is set to the EF.SENS parameter. Just set the knobs to ASSIGN, crank that third knob up all the way while feeding a vowel sound into the mic, and once the display says "HOLD," you've stored the vowel sound. Next, use the other two knobs to modify it as you play.
i need full sized keys whats a better synth, the Korg R3 or the Roland Gaia for tweaking, i need it to sound like a classic analog to play toto, yes, aha, the who, led zepellin, pink floyd, van halen, ect. and need versatility! the Gaia has a really simple to tweak knob covered board which i like but the Korg has a vocoder, but then again i could just buy a talk box for the gaia. What do u guys think?
@TheLemonMaster The song was recorded using only the microKORG XL's programs and effects, with some additional drum sounds (also created in the XL). It was sequenced in a computer-based DAW,
IS IT TRUE THAT I CAN GET ALL of the original microkorg's sounds with the download of Sound Editor ONTO A NEWER MICROKORG XL?
In other words...if I buy the xl....and I download the editor...WILL i BE ABLE TO, ALSO, GET ALL OF THE SOUNDS / SYNTH PATCHES OF THE ORIGINAL ONTO MY NEWER MICROKORG XL?
I am trying to decide between the two.
so if it is the case that by...just buying the xl...i can get both the sounds of the newer and the older...than i will just buy the newer xl

i have a question about the drums. in another video on youtube, its called "Yakitori Song - KORG microKORG XL with GarageBand". when you watch this video and pause at about 21 seconds, you see the display saying "A 29 SYN DRUM". But in all the reviews and product descriptions i read and watched, nobody ever mentioned drums. i'm thinking about buying one and it's important for me to know if there are drums (and how many different ones) and how do i find them on the XL? please mb.
thanks a lot! :)

How do I Format Hold?
tangofizz77 1 year ago
Quick Question: I just got one for Christmas, and I'm having trouble with the vocoder.
When I have the knob on the Vocoder section, I hold down a key, speak into the mic, and nothing comes out. The Vocoder button is pressed, orange light is on, no sound comes out. >: Help?
The simpler the answer the better, I don't understand a lot of this synthesizer lingo. >.<
MiddleGrounder 1 year ago
@MiddleGrounder Simple! Go to the back of the Microkorg XL, and find a little switch, flick it to "XLR" Input. Volia! Have fun sounding like some robot about to destroy the human race...

@tangofizz77 I actually figured this out earlier today after frantically pressing things on it. XD
But I appreciated your quick response! Thanks. ;D

Can't wait to jam it live

getting this for xmas, looks incredible but I highly doubt the recorded vocoder parts are recorded with the stock mic...I played through the stock mic and it was horrendous...but I'm fine for replacing it, can't complain at the price I got it for :) <3
megamattlolz 1 year ago
@megamattlolz The recorded vocoder parts were definitely recorded with the included gooseneck mic. In fact, every sound you hear in this video was created using the microKORG XL, even the drum sounds.
KorgUSAVideos 1 year ago
@KorgUSAVideos thanks very much, would the gooseneck mic be suitable for gigging? I'm not planning on throwing the microkorg around but it doesn't look too stable. I have no problem with buying a more stable mic if so...
megamattlolz 1 year ago
@megamattlolz Yes, it is suitable for live performance. Its metal construction is very rugged.

does it have some drumsamples built in ?
Wiivified 1 year ago
@Wiivified There are some presets that recreate kick and snare drums, but they use modeling synthesis instead of samples.

Does this synth have onboard speakers?
235T1NGR4Y23 1 year ago
@235T1NGR4Y23 No, the microKORG XL will need headphones or some kind of external amplification, like most other professional synthesizers.

SBUkjconnolly 1 year ago
I don't know much about keyboards just that I like to play them. This doesn't come with a built in speaker like my low-end keyboards do so what do you recommend I use (I don't want to use headphones)? Can I just plug this into an amp and start playing?

does the microkorg XL have an in-built sampler? - can i record and create my own tracks with loops and vocal harmonies and stuff like with the microkorg sampler?
fhagaff 1 year ago
@fhagaff No, the microKORG XL doesn't sample (although it can freeze a vowel sound using the Formant Hold features). You may want to check into the microSAMPLER.

who play this? and is it a remake of an already existing song? or is it just an unfortunatly not known master piece?
god that song kickass!!
arpodyssey1 1 year ago 24

@lepledge The microKORG XL doesn't have built-in speakers. You'll need either headphones or some kind of amplification system.

I'm constantly amazed by what I can create with it.

how do u record a vocal into the micro korg like on 3:00 ????
jc955 1 year ago
@jc955 It's called Formant Hold. Check page 56 in your manual for the procedure. In this video, it's done using preset B38- "A Male," where the third knob (while knobs are in ASSIGN mode) is set to the EF.SENS parameter. Just set the knobs to ASSIGN, crank that third knob up all the way while feeding a vowel sound into the mic, and once the display says "HOLD," you've stored the vowel sound. Next, use the other two knobs to modify it as you play.

djjessebase10 1 year ago
i need full sized keys whats a better synth, the Korg R3 or the Roland Gaia for tweaking, i need it to sound like a classic analog to play toto, yes, aha, the who, led zepellin, pink floyd, van halen, ect. and need versatility! the Gaia has a really simple to tweak knob covered board which i like but the Korg has a vocoder, but then again i could just buy a talk box for the gaia.

I am trying to decide between the two.
so if it is the case that by...just buying the xl...i can get both the sounds of the newer and the older...than i will just buy the newer xl
thanks!
