Eisenstein is the correct name. He was the genius filmmaker of his day, a sort of "Soviet Orson Welles" (though I think he's better!), a complete auteur who made films as complete works of art. His other best known works are "The Battleship Potemkin" and the film of the opera "Ivan the Terrible." Check them out; you won't regret it (both have clips on YT)
I love how the first part is all scary and then it suddenly turns out to be all happy. It really reflects on to Alexander Nevsky's historic battle in the 11th century.
Actually LBP was not made in Japan. It doesn't mean that Japan made the system means that they have to make the games too. This song is getting me hooked on classical again.
For me. from 3:00 till the end of this section is some of the best music ever written in the 20th Century. Overall great performance. Although I prefer the recording by Neeme Järvi and the Scottish National Orchestra on Chandos. Thanks fore this post!
Just going to say this but did anyone who says that the gamers only know about this because of stupid Japanese games ever think, pssh, maybe this is why people don't listen to classical music? You know because it's associated with snobbish behavior like that? I love classical music, Chopin and Mozart being two favorites since I adore the piano and operettas, but I'd never heard this piece until I played Little Big Planet. Honestly, shouldn't we be glad that people are interested at all?
@Wintd1 You're missing the point. Where the game is made is irrelevant. The fact is that people are mad this was used in a game. Probably one they've never played or know anything about. How about worrying less about how it was used and simply bask in the knowledge that the developers thought to music relevant instead of hiring some crappy pop-band for it instead.
@Jayday12345678910 Okay, then that's their loss. If people come on here and do like it enough to post even something as silly as, 'LITTL BGI PLANET FOREVUR!!!!1!!' it still means that the music was enough for them to come LOOKING for this particular track.
Took a moment, but the piece was only featured in LittleBIGPlanet for the final boss, which occurs near the geological North Pole, hence using a song's name Battle On The Ice...

LOVE this. I subbed Fl. 2 for this work in an orchestra earlier this year. It was so much fun to play.
In reading the video game comments...I, too, could care less where someone heard this originally. If they happen to hear it performed somewhere and enjoy the performance because they think it's the music from Video Game Somethingorother, I'm just glad they're enjoying the performance!!
It's like that episode of Boy Meets World where Mr. Feeny takes a reluctant Eric to the opera. They perform Wagner, which Eric recognizes from the Bugs Bunny cartoon, and suddenly gets excited to be there listening. If that excitement is the result of throwing this kind of music around, then they need to do it more often!!
@RoyalKnightVII I must agree :) i am only 19 ... i love classical music but with internet and games being my generations "life" i find it hard to find such great pieces and i must say this has got to be ranking HIGH on my classical list along with Moonlight Sonata ... both so strong in their own taste ... one being mellow yet so compelling and the other brings you into another world where you really feel a battle going on :) i just hope my generation doesn't over look such great pieces :/
I dont care where I heard this. I'm glad I did. It's great, and it pulls me closer to the music that I'm always trying to get into, which is orchestral.
Amazing Song! Did you know that Although Alexander Nevsky is mainly recognized for its use in LittleBigPlanet, it is also used in another game? Its name escapes me at the moment.
If it brings people closer to the magic of Prokofiev, I could careless where they heard it first.
"Did you know that Although Alexander Nevsky is mainly recognized for its use in LittleBigPlanet,"
That's certainly true for the gaming community, but not for the classical music community.
But to answer your question, yes, because everyone comes in here saying LBP FTW and stuff. Also, I knew that it was going be featured in the game anyway, prior to the release.
@ApsisApocynthion Thank you! At least someone understands what I mean. I don't care WHERE the game was made, the fact is they obviously hold enough esteem in the music to want to use it. They see it as a fitting piece and anyone who likes this bit of music should be proud that they have good enough taste to pick a piece of music that is useable in a completely different medium. Damn Classical music folks are such snobs.
@VincentValentine1313 We sure are. Why not call it something else, like stuffed shirt music. But when it's great, and written by a master it exceeds all else. Then Prokofiev is not even one of the 10 greatest of all time.
Quite, I actually first encountered it watching Alexander Nevysky. Yes folks, it's a movie too, and directed by Sergei Eisenstein no less. Propaganda film or not, it's still probably worth watching.

I heard it from the movie Alexander Nevsky. Japanese can really stop being idiots and stealing every German and Russian masterpiece to put in their games (most of them being crap) so that those games at least a little bit good about them. At least Koji Kondo composes his own original music for Nintendo.
One of the few times, I've much such an error. I've played lots of Japanese games, and this one seemed 100% like a Japanese game. Still, I should have looked it up more in-depth. That's a mistake on my part. Thanks for pointing that out.

@GoldenBolt13@GoldenBolt13 Koji Kondo isn't that original either. Listen to Planets Suite by gustav Holst and you'll see Kondo made annotations and took notes from it to create music for Zelda and SSBM. Just listen to Jupiter Bringer of Jolity and it's Lost Woods all over again.

Classical? Wasn't this a mid-20th century work ._. Not really works of 'old', is it? Just works of the bygone Golden Age...

Wow... One of the most epic songs I've ever heard in my entire LIFE! So strong...
Thanks LBP for showing me this song, but most of all, I thank Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev for composing it. He is AWESOME!

I think Ive to change my shorts... Sergei is so... big.
For me, "Romeo & Juliette" is probably his best work.
All Zimer´s, Horner´s and Elfman´s base his songs on Sergei´s ones, so un-original....
