@ glummdelclitch Callas' repertoir is not only composed of dramatic pieces. Most callas "idolaters" actually appreciate the dramatic carrying power her voice had in florid passages and in the bel canto operas like Armida Norma and Lucia. Seeing as Muzio wasn't very apt in this rep, yes, there would be a Callas without Muzio....
This isn't awell known Cilea's opera, and it's difficult to understand why because this beautiful aria is incredible melody rich and dramatic tempo. Muzzio here shows why she was called the divine Claudia; of course she is not at her best, this recording was made at her last by Columbia Records, but still shows how great she was.
While I admire callas a great deal, I find that muzio brings a special sincerity to her performances that I never found in Callas's. Furthermore, Muzio's use fo timbre and shading seems, to me as a listener, to be slightly more effective
One of my favorite Muzio performances; the last few bars are breathtaking! Tebaldi made a fine recording of the aria, but without the special emotional intensity expressed here. Even Callas could--and did--take lessons from Muzio.
Even though they are very different vocalists: Muzio had no florid skills; neither did she have a wobble. Her method was open Italian on-the-mask. The timbre was dark, but never the tone itself.
I don't much care for this music, but Muzio sings it incomparably.
This is a grippingly intense performance. The aria is full of despair, and Muzio sings it brilliantly. Thanks for sharing, meltzerboy, and thank you, reduxmisc, for posting!

Muzio reigns supreme: Period.

Muzio was superior. So-called opera singers today, can learn a lesson from this, but alas, the impressarios are also accoustically challenged.

This is very pretty singing, but is it a soprano voice? Where is the upper register?

An amazing studio performance, sure !
But don't forget the great Ebe Stignani (both studio and live performances).
Have a "look" to FIORELLA SANGUINETTI last concerts on Youtube too with Arlesiana.
FIORELLA sang for Madame Cilea herself when she finished her musical studies... a long time ago!

@meltzerboy without muzio there is no callas... here is all that callas idolaters love to slobber over, but with a voice!
