An all time classic of the unsurpassable combination of Lata Mangeshkar and Salil Choudhury, the bengali song of the same tune - Na Jeyona Rajoni Ekhono Baki was recorded by the same combination after the hindi song.
Saanwala = dark complexioned, salona = attractive (especially of a dark complexion), Ghata chhana = heavy clouds to overspread (the sky). So, "whenever the sky gets overcast with beautiful dark clouds" .
So, there is really essentially no change except for "beautiful".
Just from west bengal , we have some amazing artists - they are really, trully gifted . I hope it continues through all generations. You guys ROCK and keep ROCKing !
What can one say for this gem of a song? Salilda, Lataji, the cinematographer who captured the scene and Sadhana;s quiet beauty so beautifully, we can only count our blessings.
This song is so beautiful .. that even in a hot summer i hum or sing this song it gives me an ehsaas (feeling) of the rainy season in the scorchin sun
Someone said that if one were to choose ONE song that would be most representative of Lata Mangeshkar's career, it is this one !
By the way, Salida did not just pen "Na Jeeo na" in Bengali, he also set it to tune - the same tune that was later used for "O Sajana". Lataji sang both the Bengali (1959- private song) and Hindi ( 1960 -Parakh) versions.
It is said that "Na Jeeo na " went on to become one of the most important songs of modern day Bengali music.
Lataji and Choudhary Sahab are great. We cannot say enough about them and others have said it in very nice words.
One more aspect to admire is Sadhana's girl next door beauty.
Please freeze the screen after 2 minutes and six seconds into the song and enjoy the beauty of that simple face in the backdrop of the black and white photography.
I have seen this song more than 100 times for sure.
outstanding song. one of lataji's favourite top ten songs. divine voice divine nusic. can listen to this gem forever.feel in heaven while listening.everyone has given such beautiful comments.incredible timeless ageless. what else to say.thanks for posting
I think i am still not able to Describe this immortal & Giant song by Salil Choudry Sung by Giant Lata, ji .Ithink i have to take more birth to understand the height of this song,s quality to explain.
I am speechlesss, Spellbound no words to explain & still i am not that qualified to reach the depths to tell. i have to have many lives to judge this Song !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ye song Lata jee ka mere Paida hone se bhi bohat pehlye ka par jab meri shaadi hoi to tab meri Saas ye song aksar suna karti theen jo meri suhani yadaon main ha ...
One of the sweetest songs ever recorded.I can never be get tired of listening this song what a picturisation .I salute 2 music directer as well gyant Lata ji wah boooooooooooooooooooooooohat hub been listening this sweetie since i was a little boy!
@lahore2vancouver You know it's from a Bengali song *Na Jeo Na*. Sometimes I feel proud that some of the greatest contemporary Indian songs have been composed by R.D. Burman and S.D. Burman and sung by Kishore Kumar (all Bengalis) but I also know that their talent and artistic accomplishment wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for Hindi/Mumbai/Bollywood films. We all Indians, owe each other a part of our creative, memorable self.. to produce something as beautiful as this.
This is one of the best songs in Hindi film music. Please add me as your friend. I like your videos very much. I cannot see some of your private video songs. Pls share them with me. Thanks a million for your wonderful collection.
The most beautiful song that takes me back to an indescribably nostalgic ethereal world of innocence and sublime beauty... a masterpiece that defines music itself
This music takes me back to times when listening to music was a spiritual experience and had the power to make you a better human. They dont make music like this anymore. Thanks for taking me back to an era that was so beautiful.
i really love dis song.....its very diff song.....n i cannot imagine or visualize any other person doing justice to dis song except lataji...she is without much description really superb....i can't describe it in words....
the lyrics n music also add the mystic effect to the song.......
There ia a nice story behind this song, I just thought of sharing if you guys do not know: "O sajna (Parakh)" was sparked by one rainy evening. The composer Salil Chowdhury was listening to the swish of his car wipers when he was seized by inspiration. He worked out the lyrics in Bengali ( Na jeyo na, Rajani akhono baki) and offered the finished piece to Bimal Roy. Shailendra penned the lyrics in Hindi and Lata Mangeshkar rendered the playback.
My sis married a bonga. At the second day ceremony, her husband sang the bengali version of "Rahi Matawaale, Tu Chhed ek Baar Mun Kaa Sitaar", another SaleelDaa's masterpiece. I charged those egoistic bengalis they had copied the hindi song. We argued for half an hour for nothing. It was fun.
I lost count on how many hundred times I listened to this everlasting song of lata..Even while I am not listening, I am humming this song. With lata's name, this song too has become immortal, in the annals of Hindi Film Music. Thanks to the friend who has posted this. One in a thousand years, a 'lata' is born. And, once in ten thousand, a song like this is composed. Thanks a lot for your posting. God Bless You.
this classic of lataji from parakh by salil ji is too good I love this very much right from my childhood.extremely classical..................

Thank you :) And thanks for pointing out the play of words in saawli saloni ghata.
shvetal4 1 year ago
Aisi rhimjhim mein O Sajan – in such a shower my beloved
Pyaase pyaase mere nayan – my thirsty eyes
Tere hi khwab mein kho gaye – get lost in your dreams
Saanwli saloni ghata jab jab chaaye – whenever the sky gets overcast with dark clouds
Ankhiyon mein raina gayi – the night passed sleepless
Nindiya na aayi – Sleep wouldn’t come
Translation really doesn’t do justice to the beauty of the words!

I can at best offer this incompetent translation.
O Sajna – O beloved
Barkha bahaar aayi – The rainy season has flowered
Ras ki fuhaar laayi – has brought a shower of Ras
Ankhiyon mein pyaar layi – made visible love in the eyes
Tumko pukaare mere mann ka papihara – The Papiha bird of my heart cries out for you
Mithi mithi agni mein jale mora jiyara – My soul burns in a sweet fire

Not bad at all. Shailendra is a genius and his poems are many faceted and you have captured one of them pretty well ! Thanks.

Can offer only this incompetent translation:
O beloved ( O Sajna)
The rainy season has flowered (Barkha Bahaar aayi)
Bringing a shower of Rasa (with it), (Rasa ki fuhaar layi)
Has brought love in eyes. (Ankhiyon mein pyaar layi)
The Papiha bird of my heart calls out to you (Tumko pukaare mere mann ka papihara)
My soul burns in a sweet fire (Meethi meethi agni mein jale mora jiyara)
