@fromthesidelines I just recently by chance came across this station in my area... I feel like I hit the jackpot... finally good old show to watch again.. ;)
i used to get up early in the summer mornings just to watch this show(reruns) because some lil girl i liked down the street said she watches this show...lmao.
I've always wondered how many years were spent scrubbing toilets at ABC by the person responsible for canceling this show after the ratings took off in summer 1966 reruns.
I was only 4 or 5 when this aired back in 1965 but I do remember it. years later I caught the original movie at a matine' and found out, to my surprise. Sandra Dee was the original Gidget . Back in the summer of 1985 WOR tv chanl 9 in NYC ran the whole series all summer and after 20 years I got to see all the episodes. The whole decade now feels like a dream
And there was also the much-referred-to, seldom seen "Jeff" ("Moondoggie"), played by Steve Mines. That was the one component of the series vastly different from the "Gidget" films, which I thought was a flaw. Field should have had that strong, regular, male romantic interest of "Moondoggie," played by a handsome actor (in the manner of James Darren, from the "Gidget" films) who would also become a film star, go on to a pop recording career, etc.
That would have been a good role for Paul Petersen right after the cancellation of "The Donna Reed Show." The only problem was--"Gidget" had already aired on ABC & was canceled the same year "The Donna Reed Show" went out of production.
Petersen did eventually play "Moondoggie," in "Gidget Grows Up" (by then starring Karen Valentine in the title role), an "ABC Movie Of The Week"; also got to co-star with Sally Field in an episode of her next, ABC/Screen Gems series, "The Flying Nun."
Actually, pretty much in succession, Petersen played two "Jeff's"--"Jeff Stone" on "The Donna Reed Show," then "Jeff"/"Moondoggie" in the TV movie "Gidget Grows Up"--and both for ABC.
And, in some "Six Degrees Of Gidget" moments, James Darren, the "Jeff"/"Moondoggie" of all three "Gidget" theatrical films, appeared with Petersen's "Jeff" on "The Donna Reed Show," a series which also co-starred Shelley Fabares (an "SF," like the TV "Gidgdet," Sally Field), who acted in films with Elvis Presley, who himself acted in films with a theatrical "Gidget," Deborah Walley.
In some "Six Degrees Of Darren/Darin/Darrin" moments, James Darren of the "Gidget" films co-starred opposite Sandra Dee (the very first movie "Gidget"), who was married in real life to actor-singer Bobby Darin. And the "Gidget" TV series was produced by Screen Gems, which also produced the "Bewitched" series, a show with two "Darrins."
Like I always said--the late 1950's and early '60's was the era of "Darrens" & "Gidgets!"
The show's cast also featured "Gidget's" male friend & beach bum, "Siddo," played by then-future soap star Michael Nader. Nader played "Dex" on the prime time series "Dynasty," later played "Dimitri Merrick," one of "Erica's" (Susan Lucci's) many partners on "All My Children."
You forgot to mention Lynette Winter, who played my favorite, "Gidget's" nerdy, best friend, "Larue."
Immediately after the cancellation of "Gidget," Winter left the sunny beaches of California for "Hooterville' and began playing the "Bradley" girls' nemesis, "Henrietta Plout," on "Petticoat Junction."
The theme was written by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller {the most prolific of Screen Gems/Columbia's TV composers; they also wrote the theme for "BEWITCHED"}, and sung by Johnny Tillotson...
@fromthesidelines For those who might not remember Johnny Tillotson, his biggest hit was "Poetry In Motion". I believe he had a cross-over hit with a version of the country-western song "Talk Back Trembling Lips".
i guess in the last episode gidget goes to the convent.

Sally Field and Patty Duke, of the "Patty Duke Show" are less than a month apart, both born in 1946 and both eventually become Academy Award winners.
mistressofaminer 9 months ago
@mistressofaminer Which would have made Field about 19 or so when this show aired (she played a 15 1/2 yo)

@hanoc101 15 and 19 are both still teen ages.

Does anyone know which episode of Gidget had the Bewitched living room?
LaMona1965 1 year ago
Yep, she was born Nov. 6, 1946, so she was 18, just short of her 19th birthday , when the show began on ABC in September of 1965.
keca1430 1 year ago
Even though her Gidget character is 15 and a half, Sally Field was actually 18 or 19 when she starred in this show!

Although the series was cancelled after just one season, it sure put Sally Field on the map.
