@lsteer100 Not quite.. The Stirling was a separate concept, designed and built by the Short brothers.. The Avro Lancaster was based on the twin-engined Avro Manchester, which counted as a heavy bomber, but wasn't very succesful in the role, mainly due to using the unreliable Rolls Royce Vulture engines.. The Avro Lancaster kept the basic overall design of the Manchester, but had extended wings and 4 Merlin engines instead of the 2 Vultures.. and so the legendary bomber was born..
@lsteer100 Never heard of one of those.. :) :) The Manchester is one of the forgotten bombers, due to its lack of succes.. they went out of service in 1942 (I think) after a very poor performance and lots of losses, mainly due to engine failure.. rather than being lost in action. You can make a Manchester from a Lancaster kit, but it takes a bit of work.. too much for my level of skill, unfortunately.. :)
@TheCommunityShotzz I store them on shellves, in drawers and in boxes in the loft.. I do rotate the ones on display from time to time so I have something new to look at.. :) I didn't know you got the Stirling in the battle of Britain set, I thought it was the Lancaster?
@mildlydecentfilms Very careful painting with a thin brush... removing any excess paint with a toothpick, once properly dried.. :) And no.. no Airfix Zero yet.. but I saw the prototype kit when I visited Airfix in May last year, together with the prototype Swordfish and I know both kits are excellent.. :)
@BasicModelling oh yes, i've heard of the whole toothpick thing and the fine brush, but i didn't think anyone would use it because there's still the risk of scratching the canopy, pretty much why i never use it. (actually one time, i did manage to damage the clear plastic) about the Zero, you can get it off the airfix website, in case you were interested. :)
@mildlydecentfilms Well, as far as I know plastic is harder than wood.. ;) But yes, there's always the risk of scratching, but I'm a gentle soul! I was thinking of ordering the Zero and the Swordfish from the Airfix website but I'm waiting for them to send me a '15% off' discount voucher for my birthday.. :) They did last year anyway, and I'm hoping they'll do the same again this time around! I'll find out soon enough! It will knock some off the price.. :)
@BasicModelling oh well, i'll try again with the toothpick, everyone makes mistakes, even a pro like you and me! :) (if i do say so myself!) How do you get 15% off voucher from Airfix?
@mildlydecentfilms It's just a matter of finding the right angle of the toothpick, it's all a bit of trial and error and practise, I guess.. :) Pro I'm not, I'm not even a happy amateur.. but I slog along.. :) I guess I get the voucher because I'm a member of the Airfix club, and it actuallly came in the post today, so I will look up the Airfix website at the weekend, as I get paid again on Friday and see what they have in stock.. :)
Nice build, I built EX-R Jolly Roger last year and will do the MK 1 McRoberts Reply this year, it looks alot better with the Falcon Vacuform canopies and gun turrets.
@2007Colonial I'm sure it does... but I couldn't get my hands on any! I have however invested in some vacform canopies et.c for my old Airfix Blenheim, I built one OOB before and it was not my best hour... :)
@marksjersey856 Well, if the Germans had not started the war, then nobody would have been killed anywhere.. I don't build models to glorify war, I build them out of historical interest! And I build German bombers and fighters too, and will carry on building whatever I see fit, be it British, German, American or any other nationality.. old or new.. and as and when I want to... But thank you for your input.. :)
@marksjersey856 Well, I'm sorry... :) But anyway, I'm not British, I'm Swedish, even though I live in the UK! I did not intend to put you or anybody else 'in their place', just pointing out why i personally do the hobby! No doubt there are those who build models for the 'wrong' reasons, but my interest is purely historical, and also somewhat aviation orientated.. even though I do not fly myself! I just like aircraft.. (which doesn't explain why I also build tanks, but hey, nobody's perfect! ;) )
I think i read somewhere that the Stirling had a service ceiling of around 12.000 feet, and therefore usually took the brunt of the punishment of ground fire etc. It probably also were more susceptable to enemy fighters because of this..made up the entire undercarriage and bomb bay over a decade ago, and the rest is still to be assembled. This kit will probably be around for a 100 years!!!
Lovely job you've made of this aircraft. Despite a less than favourable history of being something of a deathtrap for its crews, I've always thought the Short Stirling was a good looking aircraft. I'm about to commence building this kit myself, after seeing you video. Well done!
..and it was this "short" wingspan that ultimately put it out of service quickly as this shortened wingspan meant it could neither reach the higher altitudes considered to make flack fire difficult and also limited its bomb lifting ability and so was just a stop gap to the famous Lancaster which in many ways owes its successful design to what was learned from the sterlings flaws which in being rushed into service so quickly was actualy a mass produced prototype
Great job, I reminisced on this model as I was ebaying a few minutes ago looking to re-kindle my childhood model building hoby, the Short Sterling was my first proper large aircraft that I built slowly and properly with accurate paint and sanding and filling etc and I loved it. I chose the Sterling as it was rare, beautiful and I guess I always warm to the overlooked hero things in life lol. I remember reading the short was ironically "short" in wingspan to fit the largest hanger at the time
@carmium I'm not good at weathering aeropnes, so tend to leave them unweathered, rather than ruining them.. It's much easier to weather tanks and armoured vehicles.. :) Weathering is always popular, amongst those who can do it good, but there's a growing number of modellers out there who like to have their models looking 'clean'. just like me..
@lucassbatista Sorry for a late reply, but I have been to London for a week.. sadly to say I no longer have the building instructons, I binned them when the model was completed.. sorry!! You can always try and contact Airfix, I'm sure they won't mind sending you a new set for free... :)
It's a very old kit this, about 1965. Despite the Stirling being such a famous plane of Bomber Command, I believe that no one has bothered to bring out a more updated kit. Shame.
@Poopingbotham Well, I guess this kit has sufficed for the market, and still do.. :) You can get a resin set for the cockpit, which is the worst area for lack of detail.. the rest of the kit isn't all that bad.. :)
@koolaidportal64 It's a nice kit, though.. :) The hardest bit will be to find somewhere to add enough weight to stop it being a tailsitter, which is near impossible.. but the build is otherwise fairly straight forward.. :)
@BasicModelling PART 2) The finished mouldings went into every available space forward of the main landing gear, vis: the front of the engines, the nose and a big chunk behind the pilot's seat. Net result was a Meteor that looked and felt like a diecast model, i.e. very heavy and it made the undercarrage wobble. But hey, it didn't tailsit!
@BasicModelling PART 1) Many years ago, I built an Airfix Gloucester Meteor, my first effort of which was a tailsitter. I then bought a fresh kit and made formers out of plasticine, which I used to make moulds from Plaster of Paris, into which I cast lead.
@PeteHyde989 Thanks.. I just did mine straight out the box.. it is a good kit, considering its age.. and you have very little choice if you want to build one in 1/72 anyway.. :)
Very Nice Video, informative and well composed and very nice end result too. I hope my Short Stirling will come out somewhere near as good as yours, great skill and attention to detail, well done, good job.
@ourmanroy Thank you.. I just wish I had bought the etched brass and / or resin detail set for the cock-pit interior, that was issued around the same time or shortly after I did this model.. but I didn't know.. :) It would have been nice with a more detailed interior.. :)
Nice job looks beautiful! :) When my dad was young in the 60/70's he build models and he painted his canopys with a nail. And the results was awesome and he got sereval models left=)
nice job, got bored with the usual british american and german planes so have started making russian aircraft starting with the I-185, now on to the petlyakov Pe-8 bomber.
@buidseach Good choice.. I love to build the Russian planes to.. or British and American planes in Russian markings.. :) Will you post a video of your builds?? :)
@MilitaryAircraft101 I'm quite confident you will.. :) I'm all modelled out at the moment, the B-17 broke my modelling spirit.. it's going on top of the pile of models to be completed sometime in the future at a date yet to be decided... if at all.. :P
I'm sure it would BURN just nicely if I'd set a match to it...
why is the lancaster in the BBMF? I wonder, because it wasn't in the Battle of Britain... It hadn't even flown until 1941... Still, six merlins going at the same time = priceless, the most ive heard at the same time is 2 (an allison and two radials were with it)
@MilitaryAircraft101 I guess the BoBMF isn't just remembering the Battle of Britain, but all that took part in the RAF during WWII.. Yes, the sound of the Lancaster is amazing, I have been very fortunate to have heard it a few times.. :)
Very nicely built and finished model sir.. I had this model as a schoolboy when it first came out in the late 1960s -in black plastic. Airfix were beautifully made and detailed kits when they were fresh and new. The moulds did not always age well however. The Wellington. Halifax, Lancaster, Stirling and the B-29 Superfortress kits were always very impressive models. I should very much like to recover all those great models from my childhood and build them again.
@Simona050 Well, it should please you to know that all the kits you mentioned (more or less) are still out there.. The Wellington is a different kit these days, but the Lancasters, the Halifax and Stirling are all the same, as is the B-29 even though I'm not sure if that kit is still on the market right now.. I'm going to build the Airfix Halifax later this year, but when I get round to building the Lancaster, it will be the Revell kit.. :)
@MilitaryAircraft101 Sounds good.. I'm currently building the B-24 Liberator, and have also started a B-17 Flying Fortress.. Sometime later this year I hope to build the Revell Lancaster and the Airfix Halifax, then I have covered most of the allied heavies.. :) I also want to do some medium and light bombers.. :)
Thank you :) your videos are very good :) this is my first bomber I would love to do the Lancaster to finish off my battle if Britain set but I'm going to make a diorama with the Stirling and the tractor :)
@RayyRayyx I haven't built the tractor yet, but I will do later, as I will use it forsome diorama or other.. Not with the Stirling, though.. :) Enjoy the build.. just take your time.. :)
Hey I just bought a Stirling today :) I was just wondering the antenna (wire) does it come with the kit? As I dont know because I haven't opened the kit yet :)
@RayyRayyx Nope, you have to get your own.. fishing line, cotton thread (not recommended), stretched sprue or whatever you prefer.. I use Aeroclubs elasticated thread.. :)
Very good :) I just bought a stirling today stupid question (because I haven't opened the kit) but the wire (antenna) does it come with the kit or is it something you added your self?
Hello from the U.S.A. I noticed when doing the paint you did a coat of the brown over all the wings. I was curious how you're able to paint over the brown without the paint getting too think when doing the next color over that first coat. This isnt to criticize but for my own reference when doing my models. I recently came across your youtube page and enjoy all your aircraft model videos. Thanks !
@flubug1 I paint thin layers, normally two coats of the lighter colour.. in this case the dark earth, followed by one coat of the darker colour.. in this case US dark green.. I prefer this method, as it is much easier to get it even, and you don't get gaps between the different colours.. :)
@wolf6500 I'm hoping to get the old Airfix Halifax built later this year, at some point.. I like the old kits from years past, they aren;t as detailed as some of the more modern kits, but great fun to build all the same.. :)
I have a couple of heavies in the stash, Halifax, Lancaster and Sunderland, and I'm going to try and produce the cash for the Stirling and mabye a Liberator or a Fortress
@MilitaryAircraft101 Great choice.. I haven't yet got a Sunderland, but it is on the list.. This coming month I will build about 5 Spitfires, then I'm going back to my 'Bombers & Nightfighters' theme.. The next bomber built is likely to be a Liberator.. :) Hoping to go to Hannants this coming Friday, and if they have any in stock, I will pick up an Academy 1/72 B-17 G Flying Fortress.. :)
@BasicModelling Thanks for posting this! I built an Airfix Stirling when I was 10/11 yrs old- 30 years ago! It was a nice kit to build. I have one in the loft alongside several Lancasters & a Halifax. After about 15 years away from modelling, I intend to get stuck in & build RAF Bomber Command, plus numerous various MK's of the sublime Spitfire. I started an Airfix 1:72 Lightning F1 jet this evening, just to cut my teeth again before I start on a four engined heavy! :)
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Welcome back to the hobby... :) :) It's never too late.. I hope you enjoy your builds, I will build the Revell Lancaster later on, and probably the Airfix Halifax too.. as well as a B-24 and a B-17, as I'm trying to work my way through some heavise this year.. :)
@BasicModelling I remember doing this one back in the seventies and I remember that wonderful art work on the box lid too! I did some research into this plane a few years back and I seem to remember that the last known Stirling was in Russia where it was used extensively after WWII. But nobody knows what happened to it.
@adelski68 I believe it was scrapped.. I had actually intended to build this as the Russian Stirling to start with, but could not find any pictures with evidence if the gunturrest were removed or not, nor did I have the decals I needed in my spares.. My spare 'red stars' weren't big enough.. But when / if I find some proper pictures I will most likely build that version too.. :)
@BasicModelling Right, I acctually had a look this morning. If you go to Google - short stirling, click on russian short stirling and open WINGS PALETTE- Short Stirling-USSR/Russia there are 2 small pictures to click on and enlarge. Not brilliant but better than nothing. Looks like they did take out the guns too!
@adelski68 Yes, they were the pictures I saw that mede me want to build it as a Russian version.. However, I still need the photographic evidence as to wether the guns really were removed or not.. :) Thanks for looking it up, though.. :)
Brilliant video :) Some great history at the start as always :) That boxart looks very good :) A weird colour of plastic as well but it is a nice kit which I shall have to get! How old is this kit... looks pretty old by the state of the decals and flash! You'll need to stock up on filler after this model!! You painted that canopy very well may I say :) The end result is superb... this model does remind me of the Avro Lancaster - the fuselage shape is very similar.
In short: stirling work. The top half resembles the Sunderland, as they share some basic fuselage elements. Also the plane seems to have turrets syndrome ;)
Bomb bays in the wing, unique. Must be fun painting such a big kit and seeing the chunks fall into place. Perhaps I will make a foam mosquito, I have some decent plans for a paper model.
Pinecone exhaust (reminiscent of CAC boomerang and beaufighter) and big undercarriage are impressive. Shiny too!
@BasicModelling that is clever! but it would be even better if you used this song for, say, a ju 88, bf 110, ju 87,etc night fighter versions, as beethoven was german :D
@HeartGoldMVP Yes, maybe so.. but don't forget thet the Allies.. well, at least the British, used the 5th Symphony as their signature, the 'da-da-da-dum' bit being morse code for 'V' .. = Victory.. or so I've read somewhere.. :) I don't think the Brits had anything against Beethoven.. :)
@stanwull Yes, the Ju 88 is a fav of mine too.. a classic German bomber, and more... Nearly picked one up yesterday, but eneded up with a Su-25 Frogfoot instead... :)
Brilliant build, it looks great :) I was thinking about getting this kit but never really bothered, I think I will now :) Thanks for the info too, never looked into the Stirling before so I learnt a lot :)
Never saw that aircraft before. What an unusual shaped fuselage. Looks like it required some effort. Good think you had your meerkat assistant to assist! Great build as always - in every detail!
Nice Stirling! I just wish Tamiya came out with a 1:48 scale version of this kit. I am a big fan of RAF aircraft and I have attached a video of Hawker Stormbirds for you to see. Tally Ho
You're a brilliant photographer, did you know that? I just realised the quality of the photos of your models, and I had never really realised it before... Top work on an old kit, the lancaster's giving me a slight headache, mabye those Aspirins'll come in handy... :)
@MilitaryAircraft101 Well, photography is my second interest, if not as big as the modelling.. Sadly I have no longer got my very best photo, as it was saved on my old computer which crashed.. but it was a graden spider in superb detail.. :0 I suggest you take a break from the Lancatser and come back to it later, and you'll find it a lot easier.. :0
building an airfix stirling at the moment.what a dream it would be if it were available in 1/48!

@PeteHyde989 Yes, it's too large for me and my limited storage space, but it is bound to be a good modelling experience.. :)
BasicModelling 6 months ago
i did mine as a mk1 with after market decals. nice kit though.
PeteHyde989 7 months ago
@PeteHyde989 Thanks.. I just did mine straight out the box.. it is a good kit, considering its age.. and you have very little choice if you want to build one in 1/72 anyway.. :)
BasicModelling 6 months ago
we have that same wall clock at home. It's quite a large plane for 1:72 scale.
airfixman1234 8 months ago
@airfixman1234 One o0f the largest models I have built, so far... That and the Avro Vulcan.. :)

Very Nice Video, informative and well composed and very nice end result too. I hope my Short Stirling will come out somewhere near as good as yours, great skill and attention to detail, well done, good job.
ourmanroy 8 months ago
@ourmanroy Thank you.. I just wish I had bought the etched brass and / or resin detail set for the cock-pit interior, that was issued around the same time or shortly after I did this model.. but I didn't know.. :) It would have been nice with a more detailed interior.. :)

I just bought one quite recently I am going to make it tomorrow:)

Nice job looks beautiful! :) When my dad was young in the 60/70's he build models and he painted his canopys with a nail. And the results was awesome and he got sereval models left=)

@BasicModelling oh thanks, and im quite sure the b-17 would buyrn just frfine. i did it with a zero when i got 2 a sprues anmd a c sprue!!!

@mosquito1958 Ha ha ha ha.. :) Thanks.. :)
BasicModelling 11 months ago
why is the lancaster in the BBMF? I wonder, because it wasn't in the Battle of Britain... It hadn't even flown until 1941... Still, six merlins going at the same time = priceless, the most ive heard at the same time is 2 (an allison and two radials were with it)
MilitaryAircraft101 11 months ago
@MilitaryAircraft101 I guess the BoBMF isn't just remembering the Battle of Britain, but all that took part in the RAF during WWII.. Yes, the sound of the Lancaster is amazing, I have been very fortunate to have heard it a few times.. :)
BasicModelling 11 months ago
Very nicely built and finished model sir.. I had this model as a schoolboy when it first came out in the late 1960s -in black plastic. Airfix were beautifully made and detailed kits when they were fresh and new. The moulds did not always age well however. The Wellington. Halifax, Lancaster, Stirling and the B-29 Superfortress kits were always very impressive models. I should very much like to recover all those great models from my childhood and build them again.
Simona050 11 months ago
@Simona050 Well, it should please you to know that all the kits you mentioned (more or less) are still out there.. The Wellington is a different kit these days, but the Lancasters, the Halifax and Stirling are all the same, as is the B-29 even though I'm not sure if that kit is still on the market right now.. I'm going to build the Airfix Halifax later this year, but when I get round to building the Lancaster, it will be the Revell kit.. :)
BasicModelling 11 months ago
I seem to be having 4 Allied bombers to build
Lancaster BI/III
Halifax BI/III/GR.II
Stirling BI/III
Sunderland BI/III
MilitaryAircraft101 11 months ago

RayyRayyx 1 year ago
@RayyRayyx Nope, you have to get your own.. fishing line, cotton thread (not recommended), stretched sprue or whatever you prefer.. I use Aeroclubs elasticated thread.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
Very good :) I just bought a stirling today stupid question (because I haven't opened the kit) but the wire (antenna) does it come with the kit or is it something you added your self?

@RayyRayyx I added it myself, see my previous answer.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
Hello from the U.S.A. I noticed when doing the paint you did a coat of the brown over all the wings. I was curious how you're able to paint over the brown without the paint getting too think when doing the next color over that first coat. This isnt to criticize but for my own reference when doing my models. I recently came across your youtube page and enjoy all your aircraft model videos. Thanks !
flubug1 1 year ago
@flubug1 I paint thin layers, normally two coats of the lighter colour.. in this case the dark earth, followed by one coat of the darker colour.. in this case US dark green.. I prefer this method, as it is much easier to get it even, and you don't get gaps between the different colours.. :)

Great model!!!:)About 30 years ago I built a Halifax, unfortunately it's lost, on my continuous movings.......
I still remember it...

wolf6500 1 year ago
@wolf6500 I'm hoping to get the old Airfix Halifax built later this year, at some point.. I like the old kits from years past, they aren;t as detailed as some of the more modern kits, but great fun to build all the same.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
I have a couple of heavies in the stash, Halifax, Lancaster and Sunderland, and I'm going to try and produce the cash for the Stirling and mabye a Liberator or a Fortress
MilitaryAircraft101 1 year ago
@MilitaryAircraft101 Great choice.. I haven't yet got a Sunderland, but it is on the list.. This coming month I will build about 5 Spitfires, then I'm going back to my 'Bombers & Nightfighters' theme.. The next bomber built is likely to be a Liberator.. :) Hoping to go to Hannants this coming Friday, and if they have any in stock, I will pick up an Academy 1/72 B-17 G Flying Fortress.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago

@adelski68 Thank you.. it was good fun!! :) Easier than I thought considering the age of the kit.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@BasicModelling I remember doing this one back in the seventies and I remember that wonderful art work on the box lid too! I did some research into this plane a few years back and I seem to remember that the last known Stirling was in Russia where it was used extensively after WWII. But nobody knows what happened to it.
adelski68 1 year ago
@adelski68 I believe it was scrapped.. I had actually intended to build this as the Russian Stirling to start with, but could not find any pictures with evidence if the gunturrest were removed or not, nor did I have the decals I needed in my spares.. My spare 'red stars' weren't big enough.. But when / if I find some proper pictures I will most likely build that version too.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@BasicModelling Right, I acctually had a look this morning. If you go to Google - short stirling, click on russian short stirling and open WINGS PALETTE- Short Stirling-USSR/Russia there are 2 small pictures to click on and enlarge. Not brilliant but better than nothing. Looks like they did take out the guns too!
adelski68 1 year ago
@adelski68 Yes, they were the pictures I saw that mede me want to build it as a Russian version.. However, I still need the photographic evidence as to wether the guns really were removed or not.. :) Thanks for looking it up, though.. :)

@Dragonman0876 To a degree, yes... I guess you can't really design a 4 engine bomber in too many different ways.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
Brilliant video :) Some great history at the start as always :) That boxart looks very good :) A weird colour of plastic as well but it is a nice kit which I shall have to get! How old is this kit... looks pretty old by the state of the decals and flash! You'll need to stock up on filler after this model!! You painted that canopy very well may I say :) The end result is superb... this model does remind me of the Avro Lancaster - the fuselage shape is very similar.
2002And 1 year ago
In short: stirling work. The top half resembles the Sunderland, as they share some basic fuselage elements. Also the plane seems to have turrets syndrome ;)
Bomb bays in the wing, unique. Must be fun painting such a big kit and seeing the chunks fall into place. Perhaps I will make a foam mosquito, I have some decent plans for a paper model.
Pinecone exhaust (reminiscent of CAC boomerang and beaufighter) and big undercarriage are impressive. Shiny too!

do you re use the pieces of wet and dry paper after they've dried?
airfixman1234 1 year ago
@airfixman1234 You can do, but they go blunt quite quickly.. sometimes I keep a few old pieces to use when I want a supersmooth finish.. :)

@BasicModelling I haven't actually noticed that, i only thought they went blunt with metal

HeartGoldMVP 1 year ago
@HeartGoldMVP I thought it worked well, considering the Stirlings flew at night.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@BasicModelling that is clever! but it would be even better if you used this song for, say, a ju 88, bf 110, ju 87,etc night fighter versions, as beethoven was german :D
HeartGoldMVP 1 year ago
@HeartGoldMVP Yes, maybe so.. but don't forget thet the Allies.. well, at least the British, used the 5th Symphony as their signature, the 'da-da-da-dum' bit being morse code for 'V' .. = Victory.. or so I've read somewhere.. :) I don't think the Brits had anything against Beethoven.. :)

Nice Stirling! I just wish Tamiya came out with a 1:48 scale version of this kit. I am a big fan of RAF aircraft and I have attached a video of Hawker Stormbirds for you to see. Tally Ho
