@BandWagon1987 Panenka did not think this way. His philosophy was: we're playing tonight for the people who paid to watch. We're to entertain. He was an entertainer. He's stayed a little boy with fantasy. Football should be about fun. Because of the Iron curtain the Germans had no idea he had practised it and scored this way in league games. He says, I knew it, I was not 100% sure, I was 1000% sure the goalie would not be able to stop the ball
@BandWagon1987 He told to Ivo Viktor (The Czech goalie) the night before final that should there be penalty shoot-out he would do "the falling leaf" as he'd called this penalty. Viktor was close to having a heart attack. He begged him not to do it. But Panenka was never nervous about the game. It's like a modern myth, every nation needs legends and stories and fairy tales
If you had watched more carefully, you'd hear him saying he had practiced it before and was more than 100% sure about it (Well, might be that you don't understand Czech or Norwegian language). It was not about showing off, humiliating oponent or being reckless.
@molly0000000s Easy, I was just commenting the "arsing about" part ;) My point there was to say he didn't do anything reckless or just to show off. I didn't say he'd be always succesfull. He could fail as good with normal shot...
@marcol68 Muchas gracias! Me hace orgulloso.
Some of the posters on here are completely missing the point. Yes, since 1976, a number of the world's best players have used this style of penalty (Zidane, Totti, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho etc), and so have amateur players on parks around the world. The point is that Antonin Panenka, a marvellous, graceful footballer was the FIRST. He invented this penalty. Legend.
In this document, they asked him if he knew it would be successful penalty kick, he answered: "I was 100%, not, 1000% sure it will be success because I have been training this shot for 2 years before this final and no one kicked it in this style before me".
german player Jörg Böhme did this too once and the goalkeeper tried to get back to the middle when he was already lying on the ground but he missed the ball by inches, was hilarious :D
@verygoodatlife Zidane just copied Panenka, the fact is Panenka was first one and all others are just copies (even with hitting the bar) , and that's all about it, it will always be Panenka's penalty
in "el jueves" spanish humor graphic publication, this player has been recently mentioned: in a humor drawing, it appears a goal door, traumatized of having suffered this panenka's goal.
The reason it's so famous is because he had the guts to do it in the European Cup Final. Had he failed the penalty they could've lost the match. Czechoslovakia could lose everything they had done in that match and during the hole tournament just because of a single penalty.
If you get to score a penalty at a slightly important match, you'll feel the pressure. Not only from the other team, but also from your own teammates. In this case Panenka also had thousands of people watching him.

Personally I was 9 yrs old and I was ruling for Germany, but Hanes screw up everything and Czech difense was very solid.
Anthony Panenka is the only player in the world that has shoot 54 penalty kicks in his career and lose none.
Czechs must be proud of him.
Greetings from Albania,maestro Panenka!

There is no practical benefit to this penalty. Hitting it hard down the middle the preferable. This penalty is all about the pomp.
