Here's what happened:

The person with the penny has a dime under the penny.

He tapped his hand 4 times and on the forth time, he took the penny off his hand so it looked like the penny turned into a dime.

The person with the dime on his hand also had a penny in his hand.

I used to do this trick. It's a hollowed out steel penny, and the dime fits inside of it, you show everyone a real penny and switch it before placing it on the subjects hand. You take out "Just any old pen" and do some magicky abracadabra crap, then tap the penny. The magnet that just so happens to be placed in the base of the pen pulls the penny half up and you flick it into the hand holding the pen.
