  • To count 13/16 just think of it in 4/4 and count 13 16th notes then cut off the count and start over again like this: 1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 1 1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 1 etc... 13/16 just means that there are 13 16th notes to the bar. This piece just sounds insane because Virgil is such an amazing drummer that he can syncopate the hell out of anything.

  • the allan holdsworth of drums

  • sick

  • I will pay $20 to anyone who can headbang to this

  • @ohaithercat Really?!?!

  • god drumming but unfortunately young drummers want to perfect things like this when they should be focusing on the basics. There was a guy who auditioned for working cover band who could not play straight time no matter how hard he tried. He bragged about his "polytrhythms" and ability to play in odd time but he couldn't handle pop tunes of the past few decades. Beatles songs threw him. And it wasn't like he was good at jazz either - he was just an drum anorak for playing odd meters.

  • @bowiemott how can someone play odd times if they can't play in common time?

  • @metalmike83 the guy I mentioned couldn't play polyrhythms well either. He just thought he could. The point is that anyone who skips over the basics thinking they can become advanced is deceiving themselves. Virgil can play this stuff because he CAN groove but the newcomers don't want to bother with the basics - they wanna be flash. Its like the bassists who can ONLY slap - can't play any walking lines or melody. OR the shredder who doesn't know any chords. Too many guys wanna skip the basics.

  • good memories to put in my favorites list!

  • seriously pointless music...

  • @damiano100 i dont think so...go and listen 4/4 music ;)

  • @lmospina42 dude i really like odd time signature stuff but this just doesnt make any sence. sounds like: uuuhm i wanna play 13/16.. well let's program a really random riff that fits in it :P no offence to virgil, he's great : )

  • @damiano100 Just FYI, this is from an instructional video; it was written simply to serve as something to play over to demonstrate some concepts...

  • Look at his face

  • cocaine

  • i`m shure that he can´t play 4/4

  • I have never saw it 'till today. Virgil looks like Charlie Sheen

  • @ __ @

  • Great drummer, but what a load of shite this is..

  • its pretty easy to play 13/16 slow (you would count 7+6) but WTF virgil is just throwing all this crazy shit in this and also playin it at 6,000 BPM.

  • haha hes like this is some hard shit

  • Virgil for new DT drummer!

  • hahaa, he's concentrating ... priceless to see his eyes go counterclockwise :-)

  • Alien

  • wheres the POWER?

  • @RustyBlade69 in his head... look at the strain ;)

  • Apparently, your ears are as rusty as your blade... idiot

  • @RustyBlade69 The power is in its appropriate "musical" context, where travis barker has it covered.

  • its a loop..the trick to it is simply " time memorial " Play slow at first and things will fall in correct. 13/16 or any 16 does not matter if you can count tru..he is probably counting 1, 2 ,3 4e....1,2,3,4e or you can also count maa... paa ..maa..fuck u ( in proper time ) i wish i can say it here..hahha

  • Wow.

  • this is sick!

  • Now that's some serious Star Trek shit.

  • lol

  • dnghard song ut just play yncopated noteds

  • Jesus H Christ my arms got exhausted just playing through the fucking song and holding the 16th notes...I played a broken paraddidle pattern and managed to stay in time with the whole song, but I was fucking tired after - it's so hard to stay in time with this song at this tempo - playing fills to this must be insane.

  • sounds like a great song to dance along to :)

  • @underscoreisnotvalid - Yeah, finally the uncoordinated are the only ones in time

  • fuck me!!!!!!! virgil amazes me every time I hear him play! He is a true master.

  • oooops sorry MY MISTAKE i was writing in another window.now i posted it here sorry people:-)

  • ahahahhaha lol guys:-) THATS ,,SLAVES,,

a song mostly used by virgil in clinics..It has progressed over the years now it sound a bit different.

  • Crazy Exercice

  • playing is impressive but the music sounds like shit, or is it a playalong?

  • Don't know. I like it.

  • its a sample , progressive.

  • Is this a Planet X song? If so, what song?

  • the virg would be ideal for zappa but thats why he is in planet x

  • it's a bar of 2/4 followed by 5 16th notes.

ie count it 1 and 2 and 12345 1 and 2 and etc...

ie 2/4 has 8 16th notes in it, to get the 13 you add 5!! easy!! not. easy to understand, not to play ye!

  • Was the very first part missing in this? I kinda found it hard to count. I'm a bassist and I want to master the 13/16 time.

  • or 1234567, 123456

  • that's a good explanation right there.

  • ...agreed, Virgil is amazing.

    This might help with 13 (and even 15, 17, 19 and 21)

First off, his tempo here is quite brisk. Start with something between 60 and 90 bpm.

Secondly, break the time down as such:

    for 13, count a fast 8 followed by a fast 5.

    for 15 count a fast 8 followed by a fast 7.

for 17 count TWO fast eights followed by an almost seemless single beat.

    ...and so on.

    -Mike

  • @GerbsMusic that might be oversimplifying. in 17, for example, you may not just play 8 3 4 but 3 4 3 4 3 or 2 2 2 3 3 3 2 or... do you see where i'm going? and when you prescribe a tempo, what's getting the pulse? the not very helpful quarter note?

  • @rosenbluntz i don't really get your point...

  • @allmetaliswelcome my point is that to explain odd meter in groupings greater than 4 can be oversimplifying (i.e. 5/16 can be expressed as 2/16+3/16 or vice versa) the matter at hand. People tend to think of odd meter as an accomplishment in itself. "oh, check me out; i'm playing in 13 and this is awesome because i'm in 13." As Virgil demonstrates here, it's creatively stifling to just consider it 7+6, 8+5, or whatever. subdivide, subdivide, subdivide.

  • @rosenbluntz You're right- point is how can a human "feel" 13/16 at this tempo and groove like Virgil? Makes me wanna quit

  • @rosenbluntz hey man quick question...would you happen to know how he is subdividing this, or even counting this by any chance. Your right, his phrasing is creative for odd meter. .. thanx

  • he's not from this planet.

    MR DONATI !

  • I have no idea how he is able to keep perfect time with everything he has going on. It's incredibly hard to make 13/16 groove like this. His left hand is ridiculous. Such incredible power and technique for a traditional grip. It's hard to imagine he's actually a much better drummer today compared to this video.

  • gee i think he lives behind his drums, maybe only stops practicing for chinese take out

  • he reminds me of the movie "MEN IN BLACK" where they name ppl how are not from this planet..

and believe me... HE cant be from planet earth.

  • how?

    how?

    no its human
