  • What is that big wheel for?

  • @TechnicalJaguar I understand is the accelarator, just like the gas pedal in a car, or the speed throttle from notch 1 to 8 in a diesel locomotive.

  • Fuck France.

  • @Applachia0928 Idiot

  • @Applachia0928 Fuck you

  • @Applachia0928 Fuck you

  • What is the catenary voltage? 1500V DC? I see what looks like a list of maximum allowable currents, the largest being 1000A. that would be 1.5 MW @ 1500V DC, including air conditioning.

The big white wheel is for steering, right? :-)

  • Well done! Thank you.

    What a ridiculous horn.

    The windshield wiper is nice.

What does that white wheel do? Sets throttle?

  • @robertgift The wheel is a rheostat.

  • 160km/h?

  • what is that clicking?

  • @jfsa380 It's the "chrono-tacho-graph" shown at 0:55

  • @Renatodonadio ...which does what exactly?

  • @jfsa380 It registers on a cardboard disc the speed of the train while it's travelling

  • @Renatodonadio thanks

  • Desculpa ae a ognorância. :$

  • so the windshield wiper is on, but no rain? FTW?

  • Im guessing the windshield wipers used to be manual? Or is that lever a back-up in case the motor fails? Either way, it would suck to have to do it manually!

  • click 0:01 to skip add

  • I think that the "steering wheel" is actually the throttle. Its design appears to me to be such that you can gradually "feather" the speed of the locomotive as opposed to North American locos in which you "notch" up or down. If memory serves, notch 7 or so is as high as you can go. Of course, my experience was only with freight locos; perhaps its different on the Amtrak Genesis engines now.

  • @JJRaff1822 Hi wassup.SO that steering wheel is nothing like car steering to change tracks is it??

  • @rbflowin That steering wheel is used to control the locos power. Turning that wheel switches out series of resistors step by step and train can accelerate.

  • @rbflowin No trains dont work like that. The "stearing wheel like" handle is the throttle handle it controlls how much power is going to the traction motors. For changing tracks he can use the phone to call for automatic switching. Usually the locomotive engineer does not change tracks. Even in shunting there is usualy another guy along with the driver to jump out and change tracks while the enginere is taking care of the driving.

  • @Sohave I assume that these older DC electric locomotives are like subway/underground cars with a fairly small set of power levels, each being some parallel or series connection of the traction motors and some resistance switched into the field windings, right? Newer locomotives seem to use 3-phase AC induction motors driven by variable frequency, variable voltage solid state inverters with continuously variable power.

  • @ApolloWasReal Hi I am not shure If you are replying on the right comment, i was just corecting some person who thought that the round handle was a stearing wheel, and told him it was a throttle and about how things worked regarding switching tracks. Regarding your topic the curent in France is both AC for northern france and DC for southern. I am not an expert on French Locomotives so I cant tell you which this is. but i can confirm what you are saying about AC motorcontroll.

  • @Sohave I was joking about the steering wheel. Thanks for confirming that about AC motor controllers.

I see the Wikipedia map showing 25 kV AC in northern France and 1.5 kV DC in the south. Is the south being converted to AC? 25 kV single phase AC at the local frequency seems to be the trend in many places around the world, including the USA.

  • @ApolloWasReal The southern lines are all still running on 1500 V DC except the Marseille-Ventimiglia line electrified in 25000 V AC in the late 60s.

  • @ApolloWasReal Even those old DC locomotives can push impressive power levels, a BB9200 like the one in this video has about 5200 horsepower and a max speed of 160kmh... even more impressive is the CC6500, now retired, which pulled 9000hp maximum and could go beyond 200kmh, all with relatively archaic technology

  • @JJRaff1822 The "steering wheel" is actually the throttle (technically is called "graduator handle"), and it uses notches too, but instead of the usual 8 notches on the American diesels these old electrics could have 30, 40 notches or even more, and you can use the handle to increase/decrease throttle notch by notch, or put in automatic notch progression... same goes for dynamic braking controlled by the same handle... newer locos with power electronics have notchlesss controls (wheel/lever)

  • I dont understand the need for a steering wheel on a train

  • @geneland its for when you derail

  • Leave it to the French to put a steering wheel on a train!

  • @TheMrBlinx Thats the accelarator?

  • @TheMrBlinx I'm sure it is (you didn't think I actually thought it was a steering wheel, did you? *hehe). Naw, it's just STUPID, that's all. Unless it's clearly marked, it would be too easy to turn it the wrong way. Maybe that's why the rest of the world does it better.

  • what is the wheel for? is it like the accelerator? awesome horn by the way!

  • @LogWiz Yash, thats the accelarator

  • Awsome, old but looks nice and well kept inside and out. Cheers

  • I like the way the French use a steering wheel to control speed...

  • @jeffdarga100 Yes! We'll do it our way lol!

  • manual wiper over ride!

    good idea.

  • We have these BB-s in Romania now.......

  • Put your hand on those wires up top your hair will stand up. Too bad you won't be around to see it.

  • what the hell is the white thing for its like a steering column lol

  • That is the power wheel. It is turned to the right to accelerate, and turned back to the left to slow down.

  • @lms264t lol cool it looks funny and wat does the little leaver do thats under the steering column or power wheel?

  • He lifts the handle underneath to unlock the wheel to turn it. By releaing the handle, it locks the wheel in place so that it does not move. All European railroads had power wheel for both diesel and electric loco. Some of the wheels were also the breaks for the loco.

  • @lms264t oh ok then thanks :D

    Chacun ses gouts

    @++

  • What is the wheel for ??

  • nice i have driven a steam train years ago...whith my dad.

  • Comment as tu fait ?

    1.5kV?!

    good video..=)

  • you board the cab??!!

  • @filipe026 u said cockpit

  • why do all european trains look weird?

  • This loc was built in the late 50's - early 60's (but was still able to reach a 200 km/h speed), that's why it looks quite old fashioned.

  • It got a steering wheel!!!!!

  • Yeah, no grafitti and attitude.

  • @choirboyfromhell1 Bloody civilized id say

  • @jfr3sh4lyfe3

    Troll much?

  • C'est a Blois c'est un train ki va a tour

  • And whats the wiper going for?

  • to say "hello,Moose"

  • LOL and whats the steering wheel for?

  • not for direction, its the power control !

  • It's the throttle, not a steering wheel. Common in most European locomotives.

  • Interesting looking lokomotives.......there are these kind in Romania as vell , and we have one of that red one as well :D. I have pictures.

  • de toute beauté

  • one question, diesel trains go slower than ice 3 electric trains because of weight, right? i mean, could a diesel locomotive go at 200mph?

  • there also exists a diesel version of ICE that CAN definitely go more than 200kph.. and yeah, partially. diesels were build for non-electrified tracks, and electrification isnt necessary for cargo trains.. they can go slower, do more noise and smoke... but diesel is quite powerful...

  • Well That and the amount of power put out from the engine.

  • give it a big enough engine and it could

  • Is that a steering wheel what is that?

  • no, that wheel was used some time ago to regulate the speed of the train (the power delivered from motors to driven axles of the loco)... today most trains have levers

  • Neat how the throttle is set up, it almost looks like he's driving a car =)

  • Comment removed

  • 1) learn english, as swiss you should know it 2) dont make yourself smart, because you have faster and newer trains. French do have as well.

  • 160kmh speed limit, pretty fast for 1959, that's nearly 85-90mph.

  • that's 100mph

  • BRAVO! 5 Stars!

  • very nice

  • I didn't know trains had steering wheels....

  • thats actually the throttle. :)

  • haha :D

  • the placement makes it look like a steering wheel... :p

  • le son est merdique

  • When trains stop america stops

  • What??? LOL!

  • Toujours bon pied, bon œil la 9247 = cool. Une des rares survivantes de son espèce...

  • Hmm...Nice video! 5 *

But i still have a couple of questions.

    1. I can`t hear the ventilatilation of the electrical engines. Is it replaced or..why?

    2. I know that the controller of some types of locos have multiple positions:

0 1 2 (corresponding to the level of graduator), mentain, decrease, advance and some other two levels for increasing the power using the resistance not the voltage. This locomotive is one of that types?

    Thanks!

  • Waouh!

Notes: Thanks a lot Rodal and Cattleman for this kind of posts. All trains are beautiful for someone who like them :)

  • Great video. The french have one of the most interesting railway systems in the world.

Same applies to the signalling arrangements.

Love the sound of the BB 9247.

    5 stars. *****

  • Wonderful and interesting. I went on a fast streamline train from Normandy up to Paris in the 1950s(obviously for business people). My late father adored France and spoke excellent French. He read a lot of French also.

  • Super!!!
