  • Howz this for a Hawai'i-Japan jazz connection? These guys are true nylon string master virtuosos. Herb Ohta is sooo smooth and is Hawaii's own. I think this is the only live version of Gontiti's "Anderson no Niwa" on the internet...MAHALO ponohale for this one and your tribute to vibe man Art Lyman--great posts!

  • ...você tem toda a razão :o)

  • Is "Laura" the song they play in the beginning of the video before they talk.

  • Herb is first playing the standard. Laura. Then he later plays Girl from Ipanema. As you can hear is truly the ukulele legend. He improvises intellegently. Herb has paved the way for all the younger players of today.

  • I was so lucky of having been 5 times in Hawaii (last in 2000) I discovered Ohta-san in 1998 after spending many hours listening hundreds of hawaiian tunes recordered by top guitar players throughout many music shops. Immediately, I bought ALL his available CDs.

But this ukelele-virtuous has also performed well beyond the hawaiian music, (e.g. "I wish you love") Great video, mahalo.

  • is that a concert or tenor scale ukulele?

  • maybe,ohta-san model is concert.

    thank you comment,MAHALO!

  • check out the difference of ukuleles between Ohta-san's and his son Jr. on "Hi'ilawe / Ohta-San & Herb Ohta,Jr."

    Mahalo, ponohale!

  • @knicksonoes It is an original Ohta San 14 fret Concert Bell. Kamaka made for im in '65 I believe.

  • The thing I find most amazing about Ohta-san (Herb Ohta) is that he does the majority of his right-hand picking with his thumb, and it sounds as smooth as if he was using several! He is indeed a master. Thank you for this clip. I'd be interested to know what year it was filmed.

  • Thank you watch video,

This clip about year is 15years ago.
