I love this song but I always kind of cringe when the lead guitarist screws up during both solos. It doesn't sound that bad, but I can see the anger/disappointment in his face.
Anyway, seeing Tom Russell live was as close to the imaginary divine as possible.
i can't count how many times i listened to this song back when i moved out west. it seems like it should be played out or cliched or something, but it's flat-out insane how representative of the american southwest this music and these lyrics are. still brings me back to my years in tucson the second he starts playing.
Having listen to this constant for 7 hours because somebody forgot the CD player on repeat over night, im now hooked. Does not matter if I originally liked it or not, bottom line is I now Love it!

How can you not tap your feet!!!! Seen him live in Sandinos, Derry Northern Ireland a few years ago . Acted like a guy who just walked off the street and played a few tunes. A word I don't like but.......Awsome
I just saw Tom live yesterday afternoon in Elko, NV. It was a very intimate, quaint concert. What a wonderfully talented singer/songwriter/musician, certainly a legend in his time. Not only is he sincere, but he is gracious. I'm a fan for life - kudos to you, Tom.
Awesome. These guys (Russell/Hardin) just keep working and getting better and better every year. I learned to play guitar thanks to Tom. I sat like 6 feet away from Hardin at a house concert once and have never seen anyone rip meaner riffs.
So, Poncho Villa was a politician ~ now I get it !

Amazing ! I missed him the last time he was in Chicago - just last week -
Fitzgeralds in Berwyn. I was out of town. Thank you, Tom, for your excellent song writing and music.
In my lifetime, one of the very best .. Love, Marianne. Keep 'em coming .. they
just get better. Hope to see you at Fitzgerald's next time .. !!!!

@Imissthepostoffice Well okay, maybe it was 3 weeks ago. Alright .. I have been out of town a lot. and it's
hard to keep track. Just keep doing what you're doing please.
It is a fresh breath and a joy to hear someone who has a talent .. Like Guy Clark or Robert Earl Keen, but you
top them all, according to my book. Absolutely !

If anyone has access to guitar sheet music or tablature for this awesome song, please post a link in the comments.

I finally got to see Rom Russell live this week, and I still have stars in my eyes. The man is a tremendous entertainer and storyteller.

After all these years, I'm still wondering what the hell "the year of aught 16" is...19016? Nevertheless, it's a great song.

My opinion of Letterman just rose about 20 points for liking Tom Russell songs... I guess that brings Letterman up to about a -5 now.

He's had Nancy Griffith on the show, too. He's got pretty good taste in music.
