I laugh as I watch this broad attempting to lug her fat ass to the finish line ... her "training" probably consisted of walking around the block with her girl friends, giggling and laughing and chit-chatting, telling jokes ... typical woman. If you want to successfully run a marathon, you have to WORK for it
@rollo131 She finished this marathon in 2:48:42, even in the state of complete exhaustion apparent in the video, so perhaps there was nothing wrong with her training. Most marathoners would understand and respect that number. Also, it was quite hot in LA that day.
@rollo131 You complete asshole. I bet your own mother hates you. This amazing woman was technically in the death zone as she struggled with the heat, she won the LA marathon the year before. You total moron.
@niall29 No, she was not in mortal danger. The paramedics made the judgement call that she could go on based on the fact that she was still sweating, which ascertained that her body still had disposable fluids and as such she was not risking dangerous dehydration. That is a go/no go indicator, and she was still sweaty.
Yes, she was exhaused, to the point of hardly being able to stand up, but she was not in danger from it. If you look at the video you can see the medics following her closely.
I remeber that day perfectly. I love to run and wishing to run at least ONE marathon. This image keeps me trying to do it. My respects to Gabrielle. That's the marathon runner spirit.
I was there!!! I was 12 years old. My father took me. I have never witnessed anything quite like it (until the 11 hour match at Wimbledon that finished today). I'm not just talking about Andersen's incredible will to finish the race, but also the audience. Everyone stood up and cheered this lady to the finish line. I have never seen people be so supportive in any other venue, sport or otherwise. That moment changed me and affects me to this day.
i remember her finish at the olympics in this marathon race and i had tears in my eyes and i was so inspired by her courage and inner determination and spirit. i still have tears in my eyes to this day watching this video. she was a real winner that day and in life!
An allmost unbelievable act of a determined mind. I remember how I felt when I saw this scene live on tv in 1984 (I was 16 back then). I was shocked because the whole scene really doesn´t look aesthetic like one would expect it from olympic sport. It does rather look like coming home after 2 bottles of Whiskey. When I see it today, I find it extremely dramatic and I feel great respect for Gaby Andersen. Her toughness has some kind of Sgt. Ripley appeal to me.
Incredible power of man to prove something .... it is easy to say that the organizers had to intervene .... man at the moment preparing for so many years in order to start the Olympics ..... ..... great admiration for Gabriel after those years .... tears in my eyes when I see it ...... but they are tears of happiness ......
each time i feel bored of living and my legs couldn't raise me up, i would come to see you Gabriealla, you pump the hope again into my blood vessels , with the tears coming down from my eyes each time i see you , the fear and desperate vanish from my whole body and soul, thank you Gabriella, you are my inspiration
I REMEMBER YOU DARLING!!! I was only 8 years old, but i remember those days if they were today,TODAY I'M 32 YEARS OLD AND I'M A MAN, BUT EVERYTIME I SEE YOU YOU MAKE ME CRY DEAR,I CAN'T HELP IT!!!! LOVE YOU!!!! JOE, FROM BRAZIL!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU FOREVER!!!
I think few people could remember who won the gold medal, but this scene was the greatest point of all the 1984's olympic games edition, and will be always in my memories...

I saw this on live TV that afternoon in 1984. It took Gabrielle over five minutes to finish the agaonzing final lap of the Coliseum, while grown men in the stands wept like babies. It was the greatest Olmypic triumph of the spirit I've ever witnessed. Thank you Gabrielle - more than I can say. I hope that someday somebone will find and post the full six minutes. The cameras never left the event from the time she entered the stadium til she crossed the line. An amzing and glorious moment in time.
I was there. My dad took me. I was 12. I have never seen a crowd unrehearsed simultaneously stand up and cheer this woman to the finish line. I had faith in mankind that day. And her will to finish is the greatest moment in sports I have ever witnessed.
this woman represents the power that no body can ever dream of having a little of it, this woman inspired me to do good and to be brave in my life , this woman is a messanger from God telling all of us that life is a big game and we should continue to the end fighting and if even we are dieing then we die with honor
I was 12 years old and I was at that game with my father. When she entered the stadium everyone in unison stood up and cheered her on. I have never seen anything like it since. It has affected me to this day. It was a great triumph for an athlete and the audience that watched and supported her.
that's an odd looking kitchen.

@rollo131 Well, she was not exactly a rookie, she reached discrete results in marathon:
#1 (Colorado 1982)
#6 (Boston 1983)
#1 (Minneapolis 1983)
#1 (Sacramento 1983)
#11 (NY 1984)
#5 (Osaka 1985)
and she even won some marathons in the '70.
That day was just an unlucky day for her... ;-)
