the whistle is harmonics as air is passing over the gun ejectors on the underside of wing it causes the air to vibrate it is made worse because frankie has guns fitted.
@AERODYNAMICMICROSOFT "Good ol', American horsepower"......... Correct you are! Made by the Packard Car Company. They didn't know alot about airplanes but they did know engineering in building the Packard V-1650 an improved and updated version and developed from the British Rolls Royce Merlin! ;)
Being a regualr visitor to most of the spit airshows in England, where the annoucners usually answer that exact question, and my grandfather flew spits as well who says the same thing, the whistle is air rushing over the gunports... kinda like blowing over the top of a bottle
Perhaps he has the cockpit window open as he goes by! Or maybe it's the whistle between his teeth! haha Seriously though, it's by far the best sounding plane ever. Even beats the jets which tbh as great as they are just deafen you. P51 & Spitfire Merlin Engines get the hairs on the back of your neck standing up when they go by!
@Wonkabar007 Its the supercharger. Always has been. You can hear the same whine on the Me-109G and Bf-109E the the DB601/605 engines because of their superchargers.
Maybe on the Corsairs it is the gun ports (more likely a combination of that and the oil cooler scoops), but on the mustang there is no doubt that it is the supercharger.
@v8luver64 no. ists not the supercharger. in the mustangsmustangs forum answered a pilot of a p51 mutang the question. he did a experiment, he masked the guns and the whistle stop. the whistle apear over 4G when the air has the right angle to the gun barrels
I am more inclined to think the whistle is caused by the air flowing through the radiator ducts on the bottom of the plane, which would explain why the noise is not there on every pass; the ducts aren't always open. If it were the gun ports or supercharger the noise would be there every time (I'm pretty sure the supercharger can't be turned on and off). The Corsair makes a similar noise and it doesn't have the Merlin engine, but it does have radiator ports at the wing roots.
The whistle is caused by the radiator. If you look at the rear of the radiator (the bulge on the bottom of the plane just behind cockpit) during the pass at 2.46 the door is closed, hence no whistle. There is only a whistle when the door is open and air can flow through. You can clearly see the door is open during the whistling passes. Spitfires have different radiators that don't whistle.
@matrix49A When the brits gave the Merlin engine to the yanks so they could fit it into the P-51, the yanks being masters of engine tuning, managed to get alot more horsepower from the engine.
@Aussiephil99 Still haven't learned anything have you?..... Once you revert to name calling you've already lost the argument! ;) The American made P-51's engine was produced by the American Packard Car Company, the engine was the Packard V-1650 which was an improved AND updated version develped from the British Rolls Royce Merlin. As a matter of fact Rolls Royce Merlins even adopted the American engineering updates to there own engines! ;)
@lander4545 ...no it was a Roll Royce Merlin....made under licence by Packard...hence called a Packard Merlin...if the Americans were so good at designing aircraft engines why not make thee own instead of building British engines under licence??????
@Aussiephil99 Pretty simple answer..............Because Rolls Royce first asked the Ford Motor Company to build the engine and when they refused the British Air Ministry went to the Packard Car Company to build the Packard V-1650 which was a much better engine developed from the Rolls Royce Merlin. The term "Packard Merlin" was never used as an official designation regarding the engine from either Rolls Royce or Packard! It's either one or the other. Just more folklore! ;)
@trytofly22 You may want to delete your post and do some more research, you kinda look foolish!.....just saying.;)....."Sorry you are wrong Ford were never asked to build the Merlin, a matter of a fact here are two quotes from reports.".... Ah,no Ford Motor Company was going to build the Rolls Royce Merlin under license but couldn't come to terms.........Here is a little help for you, Google: "Packard V-1650" ......And get back at me.;) My facts are indisputable and not speculation.
"In June 1940, Henry Ford had offered to manufacture 1,000 aircraft a day if the Government would let him do it his way, and during a discussion with Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr. regarding what the Ford company might produce, Ford's son Edsel tentatively agreed to make 6,000 Rolls-Royce liquid-cooled engines for Great Britain and 3,000 for the U.S.[2] However, at the beginning of July, Henry Ford stated that he would manufacture only for defense, not for Britain,"
@lander4545 Ford was not asked by Britain as you stated but offered and was turned down by the U.S.A government . Now that is not Speculation look it up yourself.
Now as for the engines I will agree with you as on some sites it’s called a Packard V-1650 but on others it’s also called a V-1650 Rolls Royce.
@trytofly22 ........Ford wouldn't produce engines for Britian (only for US defence) because he was a Jew hating anti-semite who would have been happy to see Germany win the war!!! Fact look it up for yourself
@Aussiephil99 I was not interested in the politics of why ford did not built them just the fact that I don’t think he was asked to by the British But I see what you say. Thanks
@Aussiephil99 Just for your interest, This is a quote out of some research, "In fact, according to Douglas Brinkley's biography of Ford, "Wheels for the World," Ford had in effect already accepted a contract from the German government. The Ford subsidiary Ford-Werke in Cologne was doing business with the Third Reich at the time, which Ford's critics took as proof that he was concealing a pro-German bias behind his claims to be a man of peace. "
@trytofly22 Yes, Ford offered! But only after the the British Air Ministry ASKED for help. The British also asked the Packard Car Company for help and Packard also OFFERED there help!.....................Is there a difference?? ..............At least you are now doing some research and aren't just passing on more British folklore tainted with national pride.
@trytofly22 "Look it up on Google it's there for every one to see.The first merlin equipped p-51d flew in nov 1942." Google is wrong also due to telling a lie (or passing misinformation loud and long enough that everyone believes it.) No production built P-51 Mustang built by North American Aviation ever had an engine installed that was built by Rolls Royce and there Merlin. They were ALL Packard built! As a matter of fact Packards also went into Spitfires,Mosqito's and Lancasters!
@matrix49A U lie, I think they both sound wonderful, but i heard a spit, and a 51 in the same day rite after eachother, and the 51 sounds better in person (to me anyway)
Great video. I see varied opinions about what actualy causes that whistle during a fast pass. I had believed for a long time that the noise was caused by the air flowing through the gun ports, which was why some Mustangs do it and some don't; not all of them have gun ports. However, if you look it up on Wikipedia, there it says that like the Corsair, the "whistling death" sound from a Mustang is caused by the air flowing through the cooling ducts on the bottom of the fuselage.
It's the super charger. The charged rr griffon powered spit whistles too, but not as loud as this fine specimen. Just a different set up. I prefer the spit by a mile though.
@miltonluvsno1 um, no. It is caused by the massive two stage supercharger sitting on the top of the motor. You can rev the plane up on the ground and produce the same whistling noise. Show me any other WWII era plane that is NOT supercharged that makes this same kind of noise. This supercharger did not have any baffling on it, therefore it is extremely loud. Get a clue.
@miltonluvsno1 Because of the header design on the Spitfire's engine does not allow the intake to vent to the atmosphere. I take your insult as a sure sign of your own stupidity, and your admittance of defeat. Sorry you don't know anything. And spitfires have gun barrels too, ya know. They don't whistle. You just totally owned yourself, fucking moron.
As I understand it, the whistle is the radiator wastegate (for lack of better term...bypass?) and the supercharger. If you've heard this sound in person, you know what angels sound like when they're screaming in anger. It is awe inspiring.
@myfemurhurts , the whistling noise was described on a programme on the history channel a while back by the owner of a P51, nothing to do with the supercharger, its air rushing over the gun ports, like when you blow over a bottle top, this was confirmed by a P51 pilot at Duxford, the ports on the model he flies are covered so it does not make the whistling noise you describe
@sdrfgvrfgvsfravgdsvS it is the intake of the turbo-supercharger. If you watch a turbocharged car go by, you can hear almost the same sound . . . especially large 18-wheel tractors.
P-51 Mustang "Cadillac of the Skys" Sir Henry Self encouraged Dutch Kindleberger President of North American Aviation to manufacture the Curtiss Aircraft Co. designed aircraft and the P-51 Mustang came into being.

@Wonkabar007 Some people reckon that it is the supercharger on the Packard merlin engine but it's actually the airflow over the gun ports in the wings.
Guarantee you after a few dogfights against these bad boys the Germans started shitting their pants in fear when they heard that sound!

@Wonkabar007 Some people reckon that it is the supercharger on the Packard merlin engine but it's actually the airflow over the gun ports in the wings.
