I'll tell you now, it requires a more stamina than what gridiron has. Both union and league. See in gridiron when you tackle a guy the play stops, in union its continuous. You make a tackle and you get back up to your feet and make another. Oh and trust me, the tackles are just as hard as gridiron if not harder and bigger but without pads :)

As the sport was leading to too many injuries and deaths they had to make changes... american football chose to keep high tackles, spear tackles, ect. but use protection in the form of padding and helmets... Rugby however decide to abolish high tackles and other illegal tackles with rules but chose not to wear any protection. Both are brutal sports but both completely different. Rugby players are pretty much never subjected to blindside hits, no blocking, no being hit when you don't have the ball, and no reason be be looking anywhere but at that opponent who is about to take you out. Being able to lead with head plus blindside and with pads make you not worry about ur own health plus being able to sprint for each hit because of rest makes hits harder
