The models in this video are the property of a long time club member of 50+ years. He recently added the Atlas un-powered F3 A unit in EMD paint. The B unit is an antique All Nation (ex Atwater) model with genuine "real" Grande paint. Two club members in the 1960's gathered enough genuine paint from the shops in Denver to paint up two sets of F units. He enjoys operating this train since as a young man he rode the train often.
Some good articles can be found on 9 and 10 "The Yampa Mail" in "The Prospector" a magazine published by the Grande Historical Society. Equipment used on the Mail such as the unique F3-F7's were involved in a boulder strike exiting a tunnel.. More fun reads are found in the magazine about the Grande.
no we dont have a ski train in steamboat it must be a replica that i saw cause i seriously saw one that looks like that exactlly it goes on union pacific track. every year they have an article about the one that comes trough steamboat springs colorado and i swear it looks like that
The "Real" Yampa Valley Mail train in its last years had one Alco PA, a baggage car, and an ex-Chessie dome car with a modified round end to add cars if need be. It was without question the most unique "domeliner" put together in the passenger railroad era.
Train 9 and 10 Denver-Craig was a mixture of equipment throughout the RPO era. PA's did work the train often since the Grande did not like the PA's reliability on the CZ. Visiting with a local historian about requiring an Alco electrician on every CZ with PA's due the reliability. Very quickly they were handed off to trains like 9 and 10. Photo evidence and recollections from locals will dispute your claim that EMD's never ran on the "Real" Yampa. It was always a mix until the end.
Your comment from the recent issue of Dream Trains (Kalmbach) is nice, "Domeliner". The model featured in this video contains an accurate Pecos River Brass Budd converted (mid train) dome obs that never made it to the C&O. The baggage car is a scratch built piece of a car that often was used on the train when the mail cars (ex Q or the PS C&O) were not placed. 9 and 10 was not just a mail train but the mail contracts made sure the train survived.
"Real" as in actual train, not the model. I didn't make a claim that no EMD's ran on the mail.
It would be interesting to see if the line to Craig could be operated by a tour operator or a scenic train excursion operator. Chances are slim and none that inter-city service will return.
BTW, Robert Young's excessive purchase from Pullman Standard and Budd in 1947 never made it to the C&O. Your statement that the dome's were "ex" C&O is incorrect as the cars were painted Grande at the Budd and PS factory before delivery and never saw a mile on C&O as the planned "Chessie" was a pipe dream.
One more comment, the mid train feature added to the boat tail Budd cars was added in Denver at the Burnham Shops. C&O did retain a portion of the order for the "Chessie" but none of the Grande cars left the Budd or PS erecting floors in C&O paint.
Bravo!! Excellent work! When I'm in Denver, I'm coming for a vist!!

The Yampa Valley Mail has not ran since 1967. You must have seen the Ski Train perhaps?
