it should be an age of plan9, not unix anymore, linux is just a bloated kernel and it isn't suitable for handheld device. It works because it JUST works.
Linux is great but what about support? Android may have deep pockets but when people trust their information to a cloud they have to be able to get support. Android BRAND tablets may be supported but Android running on other machines is not. I'm not going to a forum to fix my computer - just won't. A cloud-with-OS has to be supported. I think this is why Apple is winning and Blackberry still hasn't died.
Android is BS, evil google's another attempt like they stole your emails and passwords from wifi. Phones and tablets are getting powerful cpus and linux will work very well on those. I believe this shitty ubuntu owner is bribed by google not to focus on tablets since google hired canonical for some work on android. anyways i dumped ubuntu for mint.
Looks like pure crap, doesn't it? Yes, it does. How about sticking with a tried and true platform that has thousands of apps specifically designed for it and its intended form factor. Also, what up with that shirt girl?!!!
Will someone PLEASE demonstrate the art capabilities of a tablet like this. I don't care about it's web page scrolling capabilities, but the high resolution and sharp image contrast is a must. I create digital art in programs like gimp and photoshop and I'm looking for an ART tablet for Linux that can handle pen motion detection or at least come with some kind of tool to give me more control over what is being done with the tablet. Wacom is popular on Windows but, not helpful for a Linux user.
Android is Linux like Mac OSX is UNIX. It's a commercial operating system with all the accompanying efforts to handcuff the user. A truly open tablet is nice to have on the market. And the number of Linux applications out there? Well, the repositories I currently use on my Gentoo and Debian systems have over 20,000 packages. And then you have all the stuff you can download and install yourself, and good luck counting that.
@thegroove2000 Very true, but what is the relevance of this to my remark? My point was that Android is not an open-source system and those free/open software fans among us would therefore very much welcome a Linux tablet. In fact, I am currently shopping for one. And yes, I would be happy enough with an OpenBSD or some such tablet too.
So, why should I get this over an Android tablet? Android already has thousands(or do they have 1 million by now?) of apps and games. This thing has...what?
Yes, it is linux core. But I feel it's a sad attempt to turn it into a linux mobile version of windows. You can't even mod the thing unless you root it, which android doesn't want you to do to begin with. No compiling software, so I can't tweak my apps while working on the android, which would be quite easy to work with btw with a usb keyboard. KDE and GNOME have always been a favorite of linux users yet you can't even use it on this thing. Even LXDE could run on this having a lighter footprint.
@thecuriouschristion To be honest, that's cuz most people don't want that. Andriod is for people who want a good smartphone. That's it. Not for tweaking. Why perfect anything? What a waste of time...
Get it right people. Google might be linux, but you have to say its a dumbed down version of it. It doesn't feel like linux to me unless you can choose from kde/gnome/openbox, compile your own programs, use apt/yum, and ect. I was extremely disappointed when I got my android tablet and realised I couldn't customize it the way I wanted to.
@thecuriouschristion actually you can root it and customize it the way you want.
and why would you want gnome or kde on one of these tablets? they are not made for it, but for desktops (or semi desktop tablet with mouse support), even unity is for desktops/netbooks.
and most "traditional" linux apps dont work well on tablets either, only the new generation of android/meego/webOS apps.
@madjunir Have you seen videos of ubuntu on android devices? They actually work quite well. Even ancient computer with worse specs than the android has more customizations than this. The point is freedom of choice. Android was supposed to be completely open for customization, but you have to hack it to even manage that. Even more of a nightmare is trying to get Android to be semi buggy free. A decent linux distro shouldn't have this problem, which android does.
What is it with these so called tech GURUS who don't understand that Android IS A LINUX BASED DISTRO. The Galapagos Does not run a VERSION of linux. Its USER ENVIRONMENT is built on top of the LINUX KERNEL just as Android is as well as Ubuntu and Debian and Redhat and yellow dog, pc linux, damn small linux, SUSE, on and on and on! Lets get it straight people. You are confusing the consumers!
Android may have a Linux kernel, but if you've ever programmed on Linux and then tried to program on Android you see that they are a world apart. I was very excited about Android until I saw what they had done to Linux.
@eialbur just because the programming API's are different doesn't make Android any less a Linux distro than any other Linux distro out there. One thing you have to keep in mind, that the only thing that Linux is, is a kernel. Nothing more and nothing less. GNU/Linux distros (Debian, Fedora, etc) all use the GNU tools along with UI's, etc to make up a useable operating system. One of the biggest misconceptions out there is that Linux is an operating system.
Also, if they're going to claim that these devices are running Linux, I say give us something like Ubuntu (desktop, taskbar(s), fully customizable UI). Not a trimmed down version of Linux some dev-team came up with. That's what Android is for.
yh yh yh android is linux but dosnt support all the apps most linux desktop distros have and the fact androis is licenced by google , a proper linix tabet would be more open than android ,
wow this would b really cool and i think more operating systems should emerge for tablets like maybe chrome os,although that would require a constant data connection, but most tablets offer 3g plans
Interesting.... However, as a VAR and a consumer I don't buy Sharp. They refused to honor a warranty on a product I purchased. Had poor customer service. So I've vowed to not purchase or promote their products.
Looks very, very laggy, though their AirPlay equivalent of "flicking" (eek, change the name!) looks seemless. Their promise of expanding the amount of compatiple devices for it is awesome.
I looked this company up on Twitter and it was all in Chinese? I have made it my goal to buy American made products instead of foreign do to me trying to increase employment in America. But, it is a nice tablet
