1) The power to tax is the power to destroy (see McCullough v. MD); that precedent would grant inordinate power to the gov't against all religious/non-profit organizations.

2) Such a tax would actually be quite unfair, as there is no other church in the country so taxed, and many with far more radical views.

3) The Vatican did not pay off the settlements, but rather the local ordinaries did so of their own funds. Their "riches" were not affected.

I think that it is possible to change your preferences. It certainly isn't something easy. Probably incredibly difficult, but perhaps thats the point -- a test of faith... in this case, its rather frowned upon, because it isn't about love, its pure lust (The Southern Decadence Parade? Thats not love at all!) Love is a decent excuse, but with sufficient determination and faith, it is possible to block out such 'sinful' feelings.
