This was the best scene in the movie (even though I didn't like the movie very much this scene impressed me). Especially because it's very silent; usually in cartoons the bad guys talk so much about how great they are etc.... Makes me bored.
Surprisingly impressive CGI, considering it was 1986. This is technically hand-drawn, but this scene was traced from wire-frame graphics onto animation cels. If you exclude The Black Cauldron, which used a very small amount of it, this is one of the first animated features to use CGI.
@progrockcoffee I like the wire-frame tracing style in the Pre-CAPS era better. In The Black Cauldron, what was computer animated? The floating cauldron pots?
@McSuperfly101 Actually, it's all hand-drawn. The Rescuers Down Under was actually the first Disney film to use computer animation (you can tell just by looking at it as well.)
To think this was in 1986... impressive animation. Oh, and to clear up any confusion over what's CG and hand drawn....
"The movie is also notable for its early use of computer generated imagery (CGI) for a chase scene that takes place in the interior of Big Ben. The movements of the clock's gears were produced as wire-frame graphics on a computer, printed out and traced onto animation cells where colors and the characters were added"
The CGI clock gears are actually drawn on to paper by a computerized pen that copies the image from the computer to the paper - that's why it looks so much like hand drawn animation.
The thing I really liked in this scene was where the music starts getting suspenseful as the chase starts. i just looked it up and the music composer was Henry Mancini, the guy who did the music for the Pink Panther and Tom & Jerry: The Movie. That's amazing what he did with this movie!!!!!
Ratigan's probably the most overlooked villain in Disney history. Not only voiced by the great Vincent Price, but who didn't get creeped from this clip where he ripped through his suit in his rage to kill Basil.
One of the understated classics, and one of the few animated homages to Sherlock Holmes.
i know this movie this seen alone shows ratigans pure hatred twords basil and finally being out smarted by the detective, he hated him so much that he lost his composer and basicaly said fuk it im a rat this was the scariest scene i ever saw in a disney movie they dont make em like this anymore
@83phatman People were freaked out with Fidget, but with me it was the climax scene were Ratigan turns homocidal that freaked me out as a kid. Could not finish watching the movie he scared me so bad.
My 2 favorite things in the world...Heavy Metal and Animated movies.
Is it possible for a metalhead to love animation?
I'll also note that in 1986, along with this movie, 3 of the best metal albums came out: Slayers Reign in blood, Metallicas Master of Puppets and Megadeths Peace Sells...so you can kind of see where Im coming from
That was the most powerful pimp slap ever

When you take into account that this movie was filmed back in 1986, this scene is absolutely incredible.

@CaptainRaccoonWhitly Wait, forget I ever said that. I guess it did have computer animation in some spots (although very minimal.)

@CaptainRaccoonWhitly Yeah, I've got the DVD and in the behind the scenes feature they say that they used computer animation for that part.
