  • Thanks for posting this live clip of one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. Please pardon my ignorance, what TV program was this clip taken from? Did Midnight Oil perform a complete concert for the TV program?

    Thanks,

    Ken

  • I am a kiwi who would stick up for any thing NZ because I like to support my country. But the Oils are from Aus and I cannot deny their brilliance. They are truly a band that made performances as great as their albums.

  • Oh fuck me ...I saw these guys in 1982 at the Los Angeles Street Scene in front of City Hall....and all hell broke out. Brilliant.

  • Australia have really good Bands

  • Pete should have just stuck to making music

  • What a fucking bald cunt. No-one but the fucking Greens like this mong. Even the Unions who have supported the Labor party for years have abandoned Labor and this epileptic retard.

  • This guy would look like a spastic in front of any other band - having said that, I LOVE THE OILS!!!!

  • Midnight Oil! Love 'em

  • One of the VERY few bands that was ALWAYS better live than on record. The records were great, but damn ... they KILLED IT live.

  • This is from the 3/03/87 RMIT concert, widely available on torrenting sites (in fact, you'll notice it's copyright 1987 on the end)

  • Best band ever! There music screams about the insane injustices that continue on and on! Their music also crosses borders in that, the plights of the Aborigine that are in so many of their songs, could easily be the same plight of any oppressed people the world over!

  • ID PICK MIDNIGHT OIL OUTA ANY AMERICAN BAND... No offence american bands... I just really love midnight oil

  • for those americans out there, this song is about Mount kosciosko, biggest alpine mountain in aus.

  • @tom3999 I don't think this song is much about the mountain, but rather mt. K as a symbol for something larger -- else why the remarks about 'darkness over Charleville' etc. Certainly Mt K is not between Darwin & Alice Springs. Unfortunately I do not know (nor have been able to find out) what the significance is of Charleville in this song, or what's meant by people trying to cross the road etc, but it seems to be about Australia as a whole nation -- ancient blacks and modern whites combined

  • awesome i love there band!!!!!! and all i can say is AWESOME!!!!!

  • oonngee gooongee the Oils rule . muuuuaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhhh

(looking forward to cappucino in the Eastern Suburbs!) havent been there in god knows how many years

  • Love them they're very passionate band with a caring heart!!!

  • a melhor de todos os tempos

    The best

  • The Oilsssssssssssssss

  • both superb musicians - agreed a very silly non quantifyable comment - i mean that respectfully so there is no deluge of abuse as is common

i went to oz for the first time in 97 and it was just after my dad died and i bumped into peter in an indian takeout in ashfield , he waited so i could get my camera! as a massive oils fan it soothed things what a great human being .. who are people to judge himand call him a sellout until they have done the amount of work he has for a fair and just world

  • Just a heads up, its spelled Kosciuszko.

  • Such a waist,

why'd they have to be Activists ... :(

  • @DanameaTheBattleLock I totally agree.

  • @DanameaTheBattleLock oh ha ha ho ho, yes indeed they should just have been new age musicians. Unless of course they wanted to make a difference ... oh! well that explains it then :)

  • @Jobotubular

    Good Point.

  • this is a real revolutionary band, Im mexican living in the states all my life, and I love peter garret as well as zapata, long live the oil, from california

  • My favorite Midnight Oil song. Pumps me up. Takes me back to my early 20's.

  • sounds so much better with the violin.

  • LEGENDS!!

    .

    .

    .

  • This might be from the gig they did at RMIT in 1987. They showed the whole thing on Rage a couple of years back. Wish I'd have taped it!

  • When " Giff " left, the band never sounded and felt the same. Our finest bassist IMHO !

  • @ruffian1868

As much as I love Bones I think you may be right. It also probably had to do with the Oils being at their peak around the same time.

  • Anybody know why Gifford left the band, or what he did after?

  • @chikkipop . I think Giff left because of long touring schedules, family commitments, exhaustion etc etc. He went on to start up the world famous bikini company " Wicked Weasel " and has made a fortune creating the worlds smallest bikini's. Very Rock n' Roll indeed ! He still ranks as the No1 Australian bassist with me, and would love to see him strap on the ol' battered P-Bass one more time !

  • evry-time i listen to this it conjures a whole host of images, lyrically it doesn't quite fit , experientially we each have our history.

    Amazing.

you can take it as your own.

  • my all-time favorite band! ever!

  • Best song off Red Sails, one of my favorites. I have a live version of this somewhere where Pete sings lead but it's just not the same.

  • My Favourite Band!

  • as a yankee, i adore pg

  • AMAZING, OILS, BEST BAND IN THE WORLD

  • First (of many) time I saw the Oils was at Festival Hall in Melbourne in 1987. Changed my life.......

  • Rob Hirst - dead set legend drummer and composer.

  • Call off the ultimatum ..no don't turn away!!! Yeah red sails in the sunset!!!

  • Ahhh I loved red sails and 10-1 other than that their songs were hit and miss for me, but every song off both those albums kick ass, even bakerman LOL . And who doesnt love doin the Garret dance hehe

  • big intellectual requirement is one thing, charismatic as he is, fame (i personally believe) is outweighed by his personal passion

  • big intellectual requirement

  • Australian rock legends with a caring,

and heartfelt message.. Thank you Midnight oil ..

    Ac$dc : Legends my arse!!!

  • Beauty, mate! Thanks for the vid. Great memories! The Oils rule-natch! Cheers!

  • Correct spelling of the mountain/track in 1985 was "Kosciusko". It is now known as "Kosciuszko" (Polish spelling).

  • Correct spelling is:Kościuszko the surname of one of the polish heros.

  • Mount Kosciuszko is a mountain located in the Snowy Mountains in Kosciuszko National Park Australia. It is the highest mountain in Australia (not including its external territories).[1] It was named by the Polish explorer Count Paul Edmund Strzelecki in 1840, in honour of the Polish national hero General Tadeusz Kościuszko, because of its perceived resemblance to the Kościuszko Mound in Krakow.[2]

  • I've always rated Midnight Oil performing with Yothu Yindi in Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1995 as the best concert I have ever been to over 23 years.

  • Dude, ur so right, awsumm band and their music will never go out of fashion, all the new music out now is about love and crap. Midnight Oil was also fantastic at Sound Relief 2009 !

  • Awesome Band!

One of the only few bands that sing with a real passion for what there saying!

instead of people singing about kissing a girl and liking it and what bling there wearing and blah blah blah and so on of todays really bad music...

  • Totally agree with you dude, all these songs about raping white women, and singing shit like i kissed a girl and i fucked a duck, new music just sucks

  • Yeah, it's attention span is about this big (holds thumb and index finger barely apart), and so, funny enough, it is increasingly conceited.

  • LOng live kings!!!!!

  • The oils brought the house down last night at the MCG,Melbourne. When Peter done some of his crazy dancin the crowd went OFF!! LONG LIVE THE OILS!!!

  • such a brilliant song

  • GÓRA "KOSCIUSZKI"

  • Go the OILS...garrett should not have become a political leader a big mistake..Reunite the OILS & tour Aust & NZ

  • the band was just part of peter's master plan to get into politics...he can achieve more now...he's where he should be. but i agree..MORE OIL(s)!

  • I live in New York City. I LOVE listening to this song on my Ipod as I ride the subway, it's the best!

  • Good on ya Mate. Play the Oils in New York! I always take Midnight Oil songs when i travel. Us Aussies know how to Rock. Saw them Perform last weekend in my home town. They still went off beautifully.

  • This song kicks ass on the studio album. Red Sails is one of the classic albums. This live version is great too.

  • Rob Hirst the drummer is fucking king!!!

  • I totally agree, the Oils will always remain one of the best of all time and I too dream absolute legends.

  • Saw rage play this entire concert a while ago. They are playing at RMIT University in Melbourne.

  • Now a days there are almost no bands or true artist, just people expert at marketing their filthy, decrepit and malevolent ideologies through the subliminal moods of music.

  • Even U2 pushes Blackberries, and Smashing Pumpkins are flogging something or other.

  • This band had essence. Lyrics. Music. Melody. I miss it. I'd like very much to wake up one day and have the notice that they come back to play again around the world. The nowadays bands are true trashes.

    MIDNIGHT OIL FOREVER!!!

  • The best band of all times without doubt!

  • Yeah, I guess UR right, the best I ve ever seen and heard!

  • Definitely one of the few... I put them in the same class as Pink Floyd.

  • me too, although i have had a lot of music snobs laugh at me over it. that's just increased my doubt about the appreciation level that music snobs actually have.

  • @nzoz1985 Yes! Totally agree! Great players! Totally original sound and music that means something!

  • @nzoz1985 Yes! Totally agree! Great players! Totally original sound and music that means something!

  • @Corrupt5358

I love the Oils - a brilliant, meaningful band. But in the same class as Pink Floyd? What fucking planet are you on?

  • @Corrupt5358 The Same class as Floyd. The Oils made music with a message not just tripped out acid rock, what a fucked up comment the two bands are worlds apart. Both are great......but so different.

  • should be pronounced koh SHOO sko

  • deals done deal delight diggers. M oil, the seers of our time.

  • Raw aussie rock at its best. come out of retirement guys please.

  • This band always makes the hair on my arms and back of neck stand up. Especially live video.

  • i hear you, the total sincerity of their music and message make me fucking misty eyed, i regret never seeing them live.

  • So do I. The Oils were indomitable.

  • This song allways will be in my heart i saw them play this on there last tour in 2002 in Geelong i got a bootleg of it somewhere what a song

  • I love midnight oil but watching this video reminds me that peter is half man half robot i think

  • true 80's classic.

  • Live @ R.M.I.T Melbourne 1987 - Broadcast Date March 7, 1987
