@arjomac I actually heard Ed McCurdy sing this at the 25th Mariposa Festival. It was a great night, the best music you could imagine, under the stars, and free beer Molson had sponsored the event, and performers and volunteers got the free beer. Ed was one of the reasons I didn't hesitate when asked to volunteer, though.
It doesnt matter who wrote it or what nationality they were its a song for all humanity and its the words that count, just wish our wise and noble leaders would take heed!
Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream was written by Ed McCurdy, who was Canadian, and has been sung by many, including Joan Baez. A great song, still relevant all these years after it was written.
Ross 616, all I know is that songs and tunes have been travelling back and forwards between Scotland & Ireland for hundereds of years due to our close connections, maybe it's now happening between Scotland and America, who knows, not yersel!
i recently heard craigh mo criah (probably spelt wrong) by charlie and the bhoys, and it has the same tune as this. what i want to know is, which version came first? and i am not sugesting charlie and the bhoys are the original singers, before you say
i would like to thank the codnor and district pipe band and also my pipe major stu scott .for teaching me this wonderful tune...which i now play on the pipes
Does anyone know of a poem that is sometimes recited before this song is sung. I heard it once but I cant remember what it was, or who sung it. It fitted the song really well though.

Welcome to Scotland
We fight the wars of the world
and for the World we fight
to put an end to war.
To be a free man, join us
to be a slave ignore us
But to be a man heed us
and listen
For soldiers fight for peace
not for war

In case of any disputes, the song can be credited to the late Ed McCurdy.

The poem is called 'Peace' which John Denver recited before singing his version. It was on You Tube but seems to have disappeared

The Corries don't do many non-trad. songs, do they? Are there some I can't remember [besides some humorous ones] or have never heard?
